The research study shows how pedagogical practicum is conceived, and how student-teachers are constructed as language teachers, within the discourses spoken in the initial meetings and institutional documents of pedagogical practicum in an English language teaching undergraduate program in Bogota, Colombia. The discourses were analyzed under the principles of ethnography of communication and linguistic ethnography. This study affords insights into a contributory conception of pedagogical practicum and into an institutional image and a teacher’s figure of student-teachers. Pedagogical practicum contains several academic, professional, and experiential aspects that configure this space with established (pre-) requisites, tasks, and roles for student-teachers; these aspects in turn start constructing these individuals with particular manners of must-be and must-do.

Abstract This article presents an analysis of dialogue as an alternative to debate and argument for engaging contested community issues. Treating dialogue as a communication practice, I draw on ethnography of communication, cultural communication theory, and cultural discourse analysis to describe and interpret how participants practiced community dialogue as a communication event comprised of sequences of listening and verbally responding. When topics and identities were elaborated upon and socially negotiated through personal communication in the form of narratives and emotional responses, participants reported effective dialogue. These sequences were dialogic moments partially due to the dialectical tension between Americans’ once predictable civic routine of public expression of individual’s beliefs and the process of dialogue featured in our War and Peace dialogue workshop.

We examine some vehicle writings that convey slang, humour and witticism to the readers of the vehicle insignia because none of the previous researchers on vehicle writings have focused on this subject matter. We adopt the ethnography of communication and our data comprised 15 randomly selected vehicle writings. We argue that the humour-laced messages convey profound messages, which serve as tension-dousing artefacts intended to be amusing and easily enjoyed by the users and some of the reading public. We submit that language use in social interactions can help douse tensions in societies where acute poverty and unrest are prevalent.

There are various cultures in Indonesia, one of which is the tradition of sebar punjen in the wedding ceremony. The aim of this research is to find out the communication patterns in the sebar punjen tradition. This study used qualitative research with ethnography of communication approach. In this study, researchers applied data collection techniques using observation, interview, record, and note. The data used in this study consisted of two types, namely primary data and secondary data. This research used Dell Hymes' SPEAKING theory. The results of this study indicate that there is a communicative situation in the tradition of sebar punjen. That tradition is performed at the house of the bride with the last child and is held at night. This communicative event is preceded by an opening which is done by the elders, the parents of their son-in-law, and the grandchildren then form a line. Elders give advice to their children, children-in-law, and grandchildren. After the prayer from the elders is finished, the line goes around uborampe (offerings) in unison. Then the elders spread coins mixed with yellow rice and spices to relatives and neighbors and then scramble to take coins.

Minangkabau Randai is one of the traditional arts from West Sumatera, Indonesia that combines four different aspects: silat, theater, music and dancing. The purpose of Randai is to spread moral values of Minangkabau tradition by using a story called kaba. This research discusses the communication patterns used in Randai. Descriptive qualiative method is used in the research and the data collection is done by doing library research. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Randai could not be performed and thus the data are taken from video recording. The title of the Randai performance discussed is Rambun Pamenan and ethnography of communication approach is used to analyze the data by using Hymes’ theory of unit of analysis. The result of the research shows that the communicative event takes place on an open field and there are five communicative events done by the speakers: the opening of Randai, the opening for kaba, dendang, the play for kaba and closing. The communicative acts in the play for kaba are in the form of dialogue, which contain verses and environmental metaphors. The position of women in Minangkabau culture is represented through the environmental metaphors in the dialogue.
