The emphasis in the press, trade publications, and even academic publications is increasingly on supply chain operations, collaboration, and software. There is no argument that these are important considerations as companies struggle to compete in highly competitive markets and an economically difficult environment. This emphasis on “lean” or “JIT” operations presupposes the ability of the firm to operate on a minimum level of inventory and deliver a high level of service. Too often, the basic and vital interdependency between transportation and inventory, necessary to support this objective, is forgotten in the emphasis on the total picture as embodied by the supply chain. It has been said that “the devil is in the details.” It may be time for many firms to take another look at inventory, transportation and the cost of service.

Nowadays, roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) is an important mode for short sea shipping (SSS) due to its advantages of fast and convenient load and unloading system. Despite the advantages, the market share of Ro-Ro is insignificant compared with lift-on/lift-off (Lo-Lo) in the Northeast Asian region that is geographically suitable for fostering SSS. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to have a better understanding of the effectiveness or Ro-Ro and Lo-Lo in the regional SSS market. For this purpose, this paper develops a model to estimate the total logistics cost of the two transportation modes. The total logistics costs of Ro-Ro and Lo-Lo are calculated on three major SSS routes between Korea and Japan. The results show that Lo-Lo outperforms Ro-Ro on most routes in terms of the cost effectiveness, and Ro-Ro is competitive only for high-priced and time-sensitive cargo. However, it is also documented that Ro-Ro transport has a significant impact on reduction in the total logistics costs when companies integrate the supply chain and improve the cooperative relationship to a high level.

Abstract The pharmaceutical industry is one of the most competitive businesses in the world. Supply chain in this industry has been directed towards the production of large batches to avoid lack of supplies, and the achievement of regulatory requirements, at the cost of high level of inventory, higher costs and inventory write-off due to expiration or other reasons. In recent years this industry is facing major changes and challenges such as intense globalization processes, increased competition and innovations in technologies, which has broadened and deepened risks in supply chain. The paper reports the results of the study of the risk in distribution processes of Slovenian pharmaceutical companies, which was conducted among five companies and aims to draw attention to risks that arise in supply chain, to emphasize the importance of their management and to present a model for an effective assessment of risk in companies, developed at the Faculty of Logistics.

High-occupancy toll (HOT) lanes are in operation, under construction, and planned for in several major metropolitan areas. The premise behind HOT lanes is to allow single occupant vehicles (SOVs) to access high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes (and, a higher level of service) if they are willing to pay a toll. To maintain a high level of service in the HOT lanes, the toll rate is set dynamically to restrict the number of SOVs which access the facility as it nears capacity. Thus, HOT facilities provide operators of transportation systems with a new operations tool: pricing. In order to effectively use pricing, it is critical to understand driver behavior when faced with a set of traffic conditions and toll levels. This paper presents the results of an empirical investigation into the relationship between toll rate, traffic conditions, and SOV driver behavior, based on data from the dynamically-tolled I-394 HOT facility in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Analysis of the empirical data indicated that a large percentage of SOV drivers use the HOT lanes at different, yet predictable rates throughout the AM peak period, even when there is no clear travel time advantage. After accounting for these “regular” users, the remaining SOV drivers utilize the HOT lanes at greater rates when the cost per hour of commute time saved is lowest. A model was developed that incorporates both of these findings, predicting HOT lane usage rates based on time savings, time of day, and toll rates with an R2 value of 0.684.

In recent years, bicycle-sharing systems (BSSs) have been getting more and more popular in many cities all over the world, particularly in developing countries. However, a significant operating problem was the imbalance that occurred in the distribution of bicycles, especially in large-scale BSSs during peak hours. This problem could significantly reduce the level of service and number of potential users. To improve the level of service of BSSs, the necessity of redistribution was analyzed, and an operational redistribution model (ORM) that could deal with large-scale redistribution was developed. The objective of the ORM was to minimize the generalized operation costs of BSSs, which were the penalty cost of unserved user demand and the cost of redistribution of bicycles. The overall system performance was analyzed under several scenarios. The results demonstrated that an ORM could effectively improve the level of service of a BSS and could provide a detailed work plan for each redistribution truck to implement. For redistribution in a large-scale BSS, the partition of subzones was important to achieve a high level of service with relatively low generalized costs. In addition, an optimal number of subzones could be found through the scenario-based optimization process.

In the past 40 years, the franchising system has undergone a remarkable expansion, increasingly retaining the attention of economy and service management researchers. A recurring question relates to the sources of competitive advantage that a franchise network may have. This chapter intends to contribute to the debate based on the fundamentals of the resource/competence-based view, and applying the reflection to the case of the logistical service. The aim is to identify how and why supply chain resources and skills are deployed by franchisors to retain their franchisees thanks to a high level of service quality and therefore avoid the termination of contractual relationships. Based on a case study driven within a European franchise network, it is possible to conclude that the supply chain resources and competences of a franchisor play an important role in the duration of the franchisor-franchisee relationship when customized solutions are proposed thanks to information technologies.

In today’s global business environment, logistics has become one of the key determinants of sustainable competitive advantage. In the context of sustainable project management, every project will have to embrace a sustainable logistics system. Port and maritime logistics is classified as the most significant logistics system since it is considered to be the backbone for facilitating global trade. Around 80% of the world trade by volume, and 70% by value, is done by sea and is managed by seaports across the globe. It is evident that managing the pressures of sustainability is one of the critical challenges for creating value and ensuring growth across all businesses. Port and maritime industry is required to ensure high level of accountability and transparency on sustainability concerns including waste management, climate change and global warming, energy efficiency, employee health, safety and security, impacts on local society and coastal and local environmental health. Because of the global nature of the port and maritime sector, it encounters more challenges in improving sustainability performance. This chapter covers sustainable port and maritime logistics. It starts by presenting an overview of logistics, supply chain management and maritime logistics. The second section discusses sustainability in the context of supply chain and logistics management. The third section explicates green port and maritime logistics aspects. The fourth identifies sustainability issues and introduces an integrated framework for sustainable port and maritime logistics. It wraps up with a brief section on suggested areas for future research.


Significance However, implementation of this technology still faces multiple unresolved challenges, making the estimate appear over-optimistic. Impacts Rising consumer demand for transparent supply chains makes blockchain especially useful for fashion, food and mining sectors. Traditional databases and information systems will remain central to supply chain efficiency improvements. As the blockchain industry matures, the cost of deploying the technology will fall from its current high level.

In today’s competitive business environment, with a continuously increasing diversity in customer demand, a high level of supply chain responsiveness is an imperative requisite for companies’ survival. As a consequence, enhanced agility is requested for the supply chains. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the determinants that influence the position of the ‘decoupling points’ along the value chain, as according to the reviewed literature these represent the separation point between leanness and agility in a hybrid supply chain. It has been found that by applying different technical solutions along the chain, including breaking down the complete production process in modular sequences and outsourcing specific ones, considering reshaping the supply chain, the decoupling points’ location can be moved, allowing greater agility. The chosen methodology is a case study of a FMCG company, aiming to illustrate how increased agility is achieved by outsourcing labour-intensive and time consuming activities, while shortening the downstream to customer. The selected firm is since several years under Lean and Agile strategies implementation. The study shows that understanding both, material and information decoupling points, certain lean processes can be moved upstream, leveraging more agile processes close to the end customer. This way, supply chains can be redesigned towards increasing market responsiveness.

The building market of Russia today is formed by economic entities of various sizes and sizes: public corporations, large, medium and small market structures that carry out activities on a contractual and legal basis in the field of industrial and civil-housing construction. Implementation of a significant amount of construction, repair and installation work in the construction market is carried out by contractors and subcontractors. In recent years, there has been a significant deterioration in the business environment in the construction sector. The heavy financial and economic situation in the country, a high level of competition in the construction market and a drop in demand for construction and installation work threaten the “survivability" of a number of construction contractors. One of the key problems hampering the development of participants in the construction industry is the low profitability of construction works (services), due to the high cost of production. In this regard, the construction contracting organizations there is a need for a rational organization of the accounting system, calculation and control of the cost of construction works (services). The peculiarities of construction activity and their impact on the system of accounting and tax accounting of the cost of works (services) of construction contract organizations are considered in the article, the key methodical aspects of organization of cost accounting in organizations of construction Sphere.

This research aims to diagnose and identify the causes of claims and disputes between the contractor and the employer, also review the methods used to resolve disputes in construction contracts. In order to achieve the goal of the research, scientific methodology is followed to collect information and data on the subject of claims and disputes in construction projects in Iraq through personal interviews and questionnaire form. The most important results in this research are: the price schedule contract as a kind of competitive contracts is the most important and guarantee for the completion of minimum level of claims and disputes with relative importance of (84.1), compared with the (cost plus a percentage of the cost contract) as a kind of negotiating contracts is the most relative importance of (79.6), and the turnkey contract as a kind of special contracts is the most relative importance of (74.2). The  contractor and  his agents are one of the most influence sources in occurring claims and disputes in construction contracts with relative importance of (77.4) followed by the contract documents with relative importance of (74.2) and then the employer with relative importance of (73.2). In addition to the long period of litigation and the multiplicity of veto grades are most negative when contractual disputes have resolved by it, and with relative importance of (86), followed by the large number of issues and lack of efficiency and specialty of Judges with relative importance (78.4). Finally, the direct negotiation method (relative importance of 77) is one of the most friendly settlement ways favored by conflicted parties, while the resolution of disputes and claims board (relative importance of 10) occupied the last rank in the friendly settlement ways.
