Filial piety and life satisfaction among Chinese students: Relationship harmony as mediator

We tested the mediation effect of relationship harmony in the psychological mechanisms underlying the effect of filial piety (FP) on life satisfaction. Participants were 381 undergraduate students (200 women and 181 men) at 3 universities in China who completed the Filial Piety Scale, the Interpersonal Relationship Harmony Scale, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale. Results of structural equation modeling showed that reciprocity FP had a significant positive direct effect on life satisfaction. Further examination revealed that the link between FP and life satisfaction was significantly mediated by relationship harmony. Thus, improving the levels of FP and relationship harmony may function as methods to help students maintain their life satisfaction. Our findings augment the burgeoning body of research in which the function of FP in various facets of life is being investigated, and provide theoretical and practical implications.

Adolescence is a stage characterized by many biological and psychosocial changes, all of which may result in a decrease in subjective well-being. It is therefore necessary to identify those factors that contribute to increased life satisfaction, in order to promote positive development among young people. The aim of this study is to examine the dynamics of a set of variables that contribute to life satisfaction. A total of 1,188 adolescents (aged between 12 and 16 years) completed the Perceived Social Support from Family and Friends and Perception of the School Environment Questionnaires, the Trait Meta Mood Scale (TMMS), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale-10 (CD-RISC), and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) for social support, emotion regulation, resilience, and life satisfaction. By applying structural equation modeling (SEM), the results reveal a direct prediction of family support, emotion regulation, and resilience on life satisfaction. Support from friends and emotion regulation was also found to explain resilience, and support from family and teachers was found to predict emotion regulation. In conclusion, emotion regulation and social support were found to indirectly affect life satisfaction among adolescents through resilience. The theoretical and practical implications of these results are discussed.

This study explored a model of prediction of life satisfaction by individual future orientation (FO) and demographic factors. Individual views of the future and goals are closely associated with well-being. Theories of FO represent different approaches to its conceptualization. Following Seginer (2009), this study presents a combination of motivational, cognitive, and behavioral components of FO. Participants were 130 females and 75 males from 18 to 49. A new measure of individual FO (the Individual Future Orientation Scale, IFOS) and the Satisfaction With Life Scale (Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985) were used for the assessment. The results of structural equation modeling demonstrate that relatively higher life satisfaction is predicted by higher individual FO and higher income assessed as an income range and subjective satisfaction with it. Therefore, subjective involvement in a pursuit of future goals and financial background add to understanding of individual satisfaction with life.

In the present investigation an attempt was made to study the Self-efficacy, as a predictor of Life satisfaction among undergraduate students. A sample of 120 under-graduate students from Faculty of Social Science, AMU, Aligarh was drawn by using purposive sampling technique. General Self-Efficacy Scale–Hindi Version (GSE-H) developed by Jerusalem & Schwarzer (1992) and Satisfaction with life Scale developed by Diener, Emmons, Larsen, and Griffen (1985) were administered. For the data analyses Simple Linear Regression was applied. The findings of the present study showed that Self-efficacy and Life Satisfaction significantly correlated with each other and Self-Efficacy had its significant impact on Life Satisfaction among under-graduate students.

This paper aims to explore the mediation effect of psychological capital and perceived organizational support on therelationship between authentic leadership and intention to stay. The structural equation modeling technique was usedto test the hypothesized model. A survey was administered to collect data targeting a sample of randomly selectedteachers working at high schools in Tehran. The results suggest that authentic leadership significantly influencesteachers’ intention to stay, psychological capital, perceived organizational support. As predicted, both perceivedorganizational support and psychological capital had a significant positive direct effect on intention to stay. Theeffect of authentic leadership on intention to stay was found to be mediated by teachers’ psychological capital andperceived organizational support. This study shows how leaders can enhance teachers’ intention to stay by applyingauthentic leadership, engendering psychological capital and creating supportive environment.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to systematically unpack whether and how WeChat network size is correlated with perceived social capital and life satisfaction among Chinese overseas students in Germany. Design/methodology/approach Based on a web-based survey data collected from 218 sojourners, zero-order correlation analyses and structural equation modeling were separately implemented to tackle the complicated research questions. Findings Findings demonstrate that an individual’s WeChat network size significantly and directly influences bridging, bonding and maintained social capital. Importantly, a path model demonstrates that these distinct dimensions of social capital are all significant predictors of life satisfaction. Furthermore, the empirical evidence reveals that bridging, bonding and maintained social capital can mediate the association between network size and well-being outcome. Research limitations/implications Theoretically, the paper is an initial attempt contributing to the previous studies on estimating the influence of WeChat friendships on social capital and life satisfaction. Practically, these findings will contribute to a more nuanced understanding of effect of personal network characteristics derived from the dominant media interaction on social connectedness and life quality. Originality/value Despite WeChat is immensely prevalent in Mainland China, only few studies have concentrated on the role of WeChat network size in fostering individuals’ social and psychological development. The work provides unique evidence that number of friends on the emerging technology could indirectly benefit sojourners’ satisfaction with life through processes involving diverse categories of social capital in a trans-cultural environment.

In the present study of the influence of health value as a potential moderator of age and life satisfaction, 157 undergraduate students ( M = 20.8 yr.) completed a battery in which they provided demographic information and completed a number of different self-report measures, including the Satisfaction With Life Scale and the Health Value Scale. A 2 (younger vs older) × 2 (high vs low health value) analysis of variance with life satisfaction as the dependent variable showed a significant main effect for health value and a significant interaction between age and health value but no main effect for age. These findings support health value as a moderator of the relation between age and psychological well-being. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

The Japanese versions of the Interpersonal Relationship Inventory, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, and the Self-esteem Scale were administered to 153 Japanese college students. Weak to modest significant correlations between scores on the inventory and measure of life satisfaction and self-esteem provided further incremental support for construct validity of the inventory.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between self-compassion and subjective happiness and the relationship between self-compassion and life satisfaction. Participants were composed of 252 undergraduate students in Bursa, Turkey. Self-compassion Scale, Subjective Happiness Scale, and Satisfaction with Life Scale were used as data collection instruments. Correlation analysis was used to examine the relationship between self-compassion, subjective happiness and life satisfaction. The hypothesis model was tested through structural equation modeling. Results of correlation analysis showed that self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness were positively, self-judgment and isolation were negatively related to subjective happiness and life satisfaction. While over-identification was negatively associated with subjective happiness, there was no correlation between over-identification and life satisfaction. The model fitted well (χ2/df=1, GFI=.99, CFI=1, NFI=.99, AGFI=.98, SRMR=.00, RMSEA=.00). According to path analysis results, subjective happiness and life satisfaction were predicted positively by common humanity, and mindfulness. Moreover, subjective happiness and life satisfaction were predicted negatively by self-judgment, isolation, and over-identification.

To expand the literature on embeddedness and life satisfaction, the present study examines the mediating role of work engagement in the relationship between organizational embeddedness and life satisfaction among hotel employees in Ghana. Multi-wave data were conveniently collected from 274 employees working as full timers in selected rated hotels in Accra. Structural equation modeling results demonstrated that organizational embeddedness positively influenced life satisfaction and links positively affected life satisfaction. Moreover, work engagement mediated the organizational embeddedness-life satisfaction nexus. Lastly, the results showed that work engagement mediated the effects of link and fit on life satisfaction. Managers of hotels should provide employees who offer frontline services with several important organizational resources such as fit and links to enhance their work engagement and therefore augment their satisfaction with life.

The present study analyses the relationship between adolescents' perception of reputation and aggressive behavior among peers. The sample is made up of 1319 adolescents aged 11 to 16 years old. Statistical analyses with structural equation modeling were carried out to examine the direct and indirect effect of perception of reputation (real and ideal) on aggressive behavior. Results indicate that adolescents' real and ideal reputations are related both directly and indirectly to aggressive behavior. The indirect effects suggest that loneliness and life satisfaction mediate the relationship between adolescents' reputation and their aggressive behavior. These findings and their implications are discussed.
