A total of 20 students majoring in English teaching at the National University of Mongolia, Erdenet School of the 2019-2020 academic year completed the questionnaire on English learning motivation and attended focus group interviews. The findings showed that the students had instrumental orientation and demonstrated a strong desire to learn English. However, they felt demotivated by their teachers' and classmates' attitudes and living situations. The researcher recommends that the students and the teachers create a conducive environment in the classroom, where the students can feel comfortable despite making mistakes, and also suggests other practical takeaways given this post-socialist English learning environment.

Mediation theory facilitates teachers and students to tackle the barriers in English teaching and learning process. It offers a sound systematic theoretical fort on which teachers could rely, redefines teachers’ roles and functionings in the process of learners’ cognitive development and growing self-regulations. The famous psychologist Lev Vygotsky (1978) raised notions in his ZPD theory, Feuerstein (1980) illuminates capable adults as mediators, and defined twelve main features of mediation, which has empirical study value for English teaching. Thus, through quantitative and qualitative research, this paper aims to investigate the perceptions of English teachers’ mediation between private university teachers and students, analyze and compare the similarities and differences between them. The results reveal that both teachers and students coming from the two private universities have been aware of the importance of teachers’ mediation, however, have different perceptions in the frequency of teachers’ mediation. Teachers’ actual employment on mediation is weaker than their beliefs on the importance of it.

This study attempts to give teachers a perspective regarding what problems students face during the process of learning English material by employing the Autonomous Learning. The researcher used Pragmatics as the subject of learning to observe the process of Autonomous Learning during one semester. This is a descriptive qualitative research in which 7 students of English Education of PGRI University were employed as the subjects of this study. Those students are the most active ones in class. After they conducted a series of learning process autonomously, they were expected to fill the questionnaire as the data source to reveal the basic need of the students that they are expecting from the teachers. Then the data would be explained descriptively. It is expected that the teachers are going to have some new perspectives regarding the autonomous learning, which is related to the students’ problems. What they want the teachers to do and what the teachers should provide are two fundamental considerations. This study reveals that the autonomous learning does not mean that the students learn the material fully autonomously. Bigger than that, the students still need the presence of the teachers as the agent of autonomous learning.
