Abstract Since the beginning of the Modern Age, the way we see the reality around us has been guided by an inevitably contextualist, linear and continuous logic. Fragmentation and anachronism are, therefore, inconceivable properties of both space and time, precluding the way one perceives and acts upon the city. Yet, authors such as Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, Peter Eisenman and Robert Smithson (among others), with their respective concepts of Rhizome, Diagram and Site/Non-site, have explored the power and multiple possibilities of a space-time alien to the modern worldview. This essay makes use of these concepts in order to bring about another reality. To this effect, it proposes a fictional grid that acts upon the factual city of Rio de Janeiro, which becomes a Rio in Pieces. Keywords: Rio de Janeiro; Rhizome; Diagram; Grid.

Centro e periferia. Arte pernambucana. Circulação intelectual.Center and periphery in the production and evaluation of the Gilvan Samico artistic worksAbstractThis article traces a trajectory of Gilvan Samico mobilizing some of its artistic productions and critical assessments of his art. The aim is to highlight the asymmetrical relationship between producer and critics, which impacts on aesthetic options and how they are interpreted. The circulation ofthis artist from Recife, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Olinda print specific aspects, formal and thematic in his engravings. The incorporation of a visual grammar diffused by the centers, the search for a theme linked to a notion of Brazilianness and, at the same time, the way critics analyze theirproductions by linking them to the popular universe shows a specific relation between center and periphery in the Brazilian artistic production. Keywords: Brazilian art. This article is about older women and the way hypertension is linked to their life in a favela, a “shantytown”, in Rio de Janeiro. Inspired by Foucault, I suggest calling this complex phenomenon ‘heterotopic illness’. By calling attention to the importance of place for understanding certain illnesses, the limited usefulness of some public health prevention campaigns is shown. Since hypertension can be considered a “disease of aging”, it will be argued that some place-related stressors often have a greater impact on seniors than they have on younger adults.

Etnografia.Between the street and the neighborhood: ethnography of a moving spaceAbstractThis paper considers the dynamics of Lapa district in Rio de Janeiro, and proposes a possible methodological approach to understand urban spaces in transformation process such as this. Such situations are themselves difficult to grasp because they are characterized by a movement of change through which a set of narratives and practices emanates and affects itself constantly. The way in which this movement seized in this case included the analysis of public discourse about the neighborhood, in parallel to an ethnography that focused on the observation of the dynamics of a single street. Both perspectives will be analyzed from their crosses and pertinence for understanding the process of construction of spaces and temporalities in Lapa today.Key Words: Urban Space. Romania's ranking on decreasingly lower places in the hierarchy of the countries participating in the last three Olympic Games (OG) raises a lot of questions in regards to the way in which the athletes, the coaches, the sports clubs, the federations, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS), the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee (ROSC) look at the Romanian team's training and participation in this important competition. When talking only about the last three editions of OG, when Romania ranked 17th in 2008 (Beijing), 27th in 2012 (London), and 47th at the last edition, in Rio de Janeiro, one can sound the alarm for all the institutions involved. This research started from the following hypothesis: a careful analysis of the Romanian athletes' participation in the last three Olympic Games could suggest new strategies for their training.

The first part of this chapter discusses phases of favela representations in Brazilian cinema through handpicked examples like Rio Zona Norte (dos Santos 1957) or Babilônia 2000 (Coutinho 2001). Together with scholars of Brazilian cinema (Nagib, Bentes, Xavier), the author argues that the favela is one of the most recurring landscapes in Brazilian cinema and favela films some of world cinema’s most memorable ‘local expressions’ of ‘global currents’ like neorealism or Third Cinema. Movements like Cinema Novo and key directors like Nelson Pereira dos Santos have not only produced these memorable films, but they have also stimulated vital ideas on the way filmmakers ought to address the lives of the underprivileged. Building on this, the second part provides an extended close reading of City of God (Meirelles 2002), which narrates three decades of drug trade in a favela on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. The author shows how the film builds on previous favela films and so creates an immersive experience of a ‘cinematic city of god’, which, however, disintegrates into a ‘cinematic city of violence’ – and so becomes a modified version of Cinema Novo’s plea for an ‘aesthetic of violence’ in the digital age.

Body as imaginary of the city Abstract: In the constitution of urban imaginary, city and body communicate, transmit messages and play an important role. In this article, we study the body that appears as one of the images of a city. When doing this exercise by examining a series of postcards from the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, we try to break with the naturalization this body, the way it is shown and where it appears. Starting from a semiological and an anthropological perspective, we use a qualitative methodology to analyze photographic images reproduced on postcards and the social reality that they (re)construct. Abstract This paper aims to analyse the water supply systems in the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Area in the light of the hydrosocial scarcity concept and the human right to water. It also assesses how bulk water availability may aggravate this situation. We argue that water access-related problems are directly related to several aspects: the way that water and sanitation services are managed, deficiencies in planning, technical choices, and the way in which existing systems are operated. In addition to these current structural problems, the vulnerability of supply systems also tends to increase in terms of lesser water availability as long as no changes are made in management processes to promote greater water security, as the 2014-2015 drought affecting the Piracicaba and Paraíba do Sul river basins.
