The article deals with the lyrical prose by the modern poet Sandzhar Yanyshev. Examining his collection Umr. The New Book of Transformations [Umr. Novaya kniga obrashcheniy] (2017), the author distinguishes the selfidentification process of the lyrical hero, who is a product of the imperial period, typified by bilingual and bicultural intentions. The images-transformationsmetamorphoses of the lyrical prose reveal milestones of the Soviet-era colonial history and their post-colonial reception. Family members in the book are surrounded by an array of historical and mythological figures (from Golem and Christ to Khyzyr-bobo), as well as an allusive-reminiscent set from Russian and world literature. Also investigated is the mix of genres represented in the collection: part of the Russian literary and Uzbek cultural traditions, each of them can be viewed as the contextual genre of umr – an ambivalent phenomenon of life-death, transformation/metamorphosis. Sandzhar Yanyshev’s lyrical prose offers a richly flavoured illustration of current Russian literature and exemplifies the mental processes of the post-colonial era..

The article deals with the problem of orientalism in literature, narrowed to the question of Russian orientalism and its Soviet derivation. The names of Nikolai Karazin and Andrey Platonov are mentioned among Russian literary Orientalists. The researchers identify the differences between Soviet Orientalism and the Orientalism of the XIX century. The analytical paradigm presented in the article outlines the prospects for the scientific study of Uzbek impressions. Salir-Gul (1933) by Sigismund Krzyzanowski and Pavel Zaltzman's novel Central Asia in the Middle Ages (1930s). For the first time, the novel The nomad (Kochevye) by the Russian writer of the twentieth century Leonid Solovyov written in 1929 and published in 1932 is analyzed in detail. Appeal to the folklore, ceremonial, and ritual life of the peoples of Central Asia becomes one of the main techniques of Leonid Solovyov's Oriental poetics. Solovyov's narrator is not a traditional orientalist observer of an alien, and therefore exotic, picture of the world. In Solovyov's poetics, the subject of the story merges with its object and represents a single whole: Russian literature spoke in the voice of a stranger. The material of the article corresponds to the intentions outlined in modern postcolonial studies.

The 8th Readings devoted to the memory of Ekaterina Galkina (so called “Galkina readings”), a traditional enlarged meeting of the Mire Science Panel of the Russian Botanical Society (RBS), took place on February 2–3, 2017, at the V. L. Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Science. It was dedicated to World Wetlands Day, the 120th anniversary of E. A. Galkina, the 80th anniversary of her publication “Airplane Use in Plant Geography Studies”, and 80th anniversary of remote sensing studies of peatlands in Russia. The tradition to name the enlarged meetings of the RBS Mire Science Panel held in early February and dedicated to World Wetlands Day (February 2) as “Galkina Readings” began in 2007 with a celebration of the 110th anniversary of Ekaterina Alekseyevna Galkina. The number of meeting participants and talks have been growing ever since, with the most spectacular changes having occurred in the last two years. In 2017, the meeting enjoyed 63 representatives of 23 organizations, who delivered 36 talks. The abstracts of all talks, including four that were not presented due to the absence of the speakers, were published in the Proceedings. It was the first meeting where participants represented such a wide range of Russian regions, from Kaliningrad to Magadan. A list of research issues discussed at the meeting grew as well, with soil science and entomology having complemented traditional plant geography, hydrology, peat science, and bryology. For the first time, representatives of five strict nature reserves and national parks took part in the meeting. Following this trend, the format of “Galkina Readings” should be changed to a three-day conference instead of a two-day meeting. As soon as next year, international colleagues will be invited to participate in the meeting.

Medicinal plants plays a significant role in the pharmaceutical industry. In present scenario, the need is to explore, identify and utilize this new medicinal plant on one hand and, on the other, to help conserve the existing but threatened species of rare medicinal plant. This present research work was carry out for the first time in South India to analyse and estimate the biochemical profiles of various extracts of fresh parts of Gnaphalium polycaulon pers., plant. The biochemical composition such as total carbohydrates, total proteins, total lipids, total phenols, cholesterol, total chlorophylls and reducing sugar, sterols were estimated using the standard procedure in fresh plant material. The biochemical analysis of Gnaphalium polycaulon plant showed the presence of various phytochemicals. The results of the present study supplement the usage of the studied plant which possesses several bioactive compounds and used as food and also as medicine. The results of present studies demonstrated that Gnaphalium polycaulon plant could be a sourceof valuable information and a guideline for the scientists, researchers in India and also all over the world
