Pragmatics is study of significance aspects and language use which are dependent to the speaker, the addressee and other characteristics about the context of utterance. Along with communication, we are as humans do it as speakers who deliver utterance or anything to the addressee. Therefore communication and language are related to another one with pragmatics. Usually people utilize language in spoken and written, for instance conversation writing ideas, thoughts and so on in the book. For example cerebration contained in fairy tale stories were poured through the writer that one may be understood by readers. These ideas are expressed in the form about speech acts as described in Yule's theory in his book Pragmatics: Speech Act Classification (1996), there are five classifications of speech act pragmatically that can be proposed with a speaker such as representatives, directives, commissives, expressives, and declarations. The researchers used Beauty and the Beast short story to be analyzed classification about speech act. The method used in this analysis is a descriptive qualitative method. The results in this study, there are 10 speech act in short story Beauty and the Beast. In the outcomes of this study, that speech act classified into 4 types. Speech act classification is mostly Directives (50%); Representatives (30%); Declarations (10%); and Commissives (10%). The classification type unfound in the story above is Expressives.

This research deals with the types of illocutionary acts in Donald Trump’s Inaugural Speech. The research concerns with illocutionary act produced by Donald Trumps as a President of American. The aim of this research was to analyze the types of illocutionary speech act which was dominantly used in that speech. This research applied descriptive qualitative method and speech act theory by Yule. There were 63 utterances and the percentage of utterances were Representative 46%, Expressive 11%, Directive 16%, Commissive 12,7%, and Declarative 14,3%. The result showed that Donald Trump assert to the audience about the nation will be.It is found that Trump’s speech acts in his speech are intended as statement of fact and assertion. Disscussion of hopes implied in Trump’s speech acts. As seen on the table above, it can be seen that Trump hoped that his audiences would be persuaded to act

The research problems of this research is what are the types and functions of speech acts that appear in discussion activities on speaking learning of 3rd semester students of Polytechnic ATI Makassar. The methods in this research is a descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research is the 3rd semester Politechnic ATI Makassar students in class discussion activities. The results of the study can be described as follows. There are several types of speech acts found. Based on the action objectives of the speaker's perspective, Locutionary act, Illocution act, and perlocutionary act are found. Locutionary speech acts include news, questions and orders. Illocutionary speech acts include assertive, directive, expressive, commissive and declarative illocution

This research studies about expressive speech act in Crazy Rich Asian movie, the objectives of the research are to describe (1) to analyze the type of expressive speech act found in Crazy Rich Asian movie and (2) to describe the S-P-E-A-K-I-N-G model used in Crazy Rich Asian movie. This research used theory from Searle (1985) and Hymes (1974) in analyzing the data. There are twelve expressive speech act mentioned by Searle; apologize, thank, condole, congratulate, complain, lament, protest, deplore, boast, compliment, greet, and welcome. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The researcher collected expressive speech act utterances as the data to be analyzed; in analyzing the data the researcher used S-P-E-A-K-I-N-G model. The results showed that there were 52 data of expressive speech act and only ten types of expressive speech found in Crazy Rich Asian movie, some of the expressive types appeared except expressive act of condole and boast. the researcher used SPEAKING model is to know how the meaning of the social context, the purpose of the interaction in detail and describe them into analysis text. From the data analysis it shows that the types of expressive speech act that oftenly come up are apologize, thank and compliment. It shows that the characters in the Crazy Rich Asian movie more showed politeness and friendly attitude to others.

This study focused on indirect speech act used by the main characters in Toba Dream movie. The objectives of the study were to: (1) find out the types of indirect speech acts used in Toba Dream movie, and (2) describe how types of indirect speech acts used in Toba Dream movie. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data of the study were all utterances uttered by the main character in Toba Dream movie and collected by watching the movie.  The result of the study showed that there were four types of indirect speech acts found in Toba Dream movie, they were: representative, directive, commisive, expressive containing indirect speech acts in Toba dream Movie. Representative (25,71%) were realized by interrogative sentences and imperative sentences. Directive (21,43%) were realized by declarative sentences and interrogative sentences. Commisive (14,28%) were realized by declarative sentences. The main characters in Toba dream movie dominated the use of indirect speech act to express statement, command and warning. It showed that they could produce the language more politely and keep the hearer’s face while getting instruction or information indirectly.Keywords: indirect speech act, movie pragmatic, Toba Dream

This study investigates non-literal meaning in ‘Christmas Carol’ story written by a famous British author, Charles Dickens. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken or collected from words, phrases, and sentences on ‘Christmas Carol’ novella, without reducing, adding, or changing any parts from the original source.  The data were analyzed to answer three research questions: (1) What types of non-literal meaning are found in Christmas Carol story? (2) What are the interpretations of those non-literal meanings found in Christmas Carol story? (3) What is the most dominant type of non-literal meaning found in Christmas Carol story? In order to avoid bias, validator triangulation was used. The study found 11 idiom, 14 Simile, 6 Hyperbole, 6 Alliteration, 5 Personification, 3 Anaphora, 3 Onomatopoeia, 2 Irony, 2 Synecdoche, 2 Sarcasm, 1 Metaphor, and 1 Litotes. Simile was the non-literal meaning’s type which was mostly used in the story, although the percentage was still less than 50%. These findings indirectly could help the readers to understand deeper the message or the story that the author wants to convey. It is suggested for future researchers to investigate the non-literal meaning of others literary works such as tale, folklore, fairy tale, short-story, fable, etc. and media such as movie, drama, speech script etc. It is because other type of non-literal meaning and different ways of using them could be found in these literary works and media. This research deals with the using of speech acts in Indonesia Lawyers Club (ILC): KPK vs Novanto: Berpacu dengan Waktu. The objectives of this research were: (1) to investigate the types of speech acts used by Karni Ilyas in ILC “KPK vs Novanto: Berpacu dengan Waktu”, (2) to describe the way of performing speech acts realized by Karni Ilyas, and (3) to explain the reasons why those types of speech acts are realized by Karni Ilyas. The research applied descriptive qualitative method. The source of data in this research was taken from Indonesia Lawyers Club (ILC) “KPK vs Novanto: Berpacu dengan Waktu” video. The instrument used for collecting the data was the observation by recorded the utterances of Karni from seven parts of videos. The data were clauses contained of Speech Acts used by Karni. The findings of this study showed that: 1) There were three types of speech acts, namely locutionary act, illocutinary act and perlocutionary act that utilized by Karni Ilyas in his utterances when discussion with all the guests in Indonesia Lawyers Club (ILC) “KPK vs Novanto: Berpacu dengan Waktu”. The dominant types of speech act was illocutionary act and the dominant classification was directive. 2) There were two ways in performing speech act used by Karni, namely direct and indirect speech. Direct speech was more dominant than indirect speech. 3) There were four reasons why Karni using speech act, namely to actuate, to entertain, to stimulate, and to inform. [Types of Speech Acts Following Calling Interjection In Japanese] In speaking, there are times when a calling interjection can be followed by more than one type of speech acts. This research discusses the calling interjection which are used by male speakers in the film Brother Beat. In addition, this study also discussed what kind of speech acts that may follow the call in a speech interjection. The data in this study is a narrative that contains interjection calling spoken by male speakers in the Brother Beat movie. The method used is descriptive qualitative method. To get the data, the researcher usesscrutinize technique and tapping notes method. The results obtained in this research are, calling interjection, such as Anosa, oi, Anona, nee, you, and ano, are often used by male speakers to call the addressees. After the calling interjection, directive speech act and assertive speech act are speech act which appear to follow the calling interjection. Interjection ano sa, oi, anona, and ano, are types of calling interjection which can be followed by a directive speech acts and assertive speech act. In the other hand, calling interjection of nee, can be only  followed by a directive speech act, while calling interjection of you can be followed by a ssertives speech act.

This study aims to describe kinds and forms of expressive speech act in Hannah Montana Session 1. It belongs to descriptive qualitative method. The research object was expressive speech act. The data source was utterances which contain expressive speech acts in the film Hannah Montana Session 1. The researcher used observation method and noting technique in collecting the data. In analyzing the data, descriptive qualitative method was used. The research findings show that there are ten kinds of expressive speech act found in Hannah Montana Session 1, namely expressing apology, expressing thanks, expressing sympathy, expressing attitudes, expressing greeting, expressing wishes, expressing joy, expressing pain, expressing likes, and expressing dislikes. The forms of expressive speech act are direct literal expressive speech act, direct non-literal expressive speech act, indirect literal expressive speech act, and indirect non-literal expressive speech act.

This study aimed at describing and analyzing the types of speech act and the functions of speech act produced by 3-5 years old students at Jembatan Budaya School Badung. Here, Searle’s theory (1979) is used as the grand theory for analyzing the types of speech act and Leech’s theory (1991) is used for the function of speech act. The research was conducted at Jembatan Budaya School Badung. The subjects of the research were the pre-school students of 3-5 years old in communication. To obtain the intended data, three methods of data collection were used, namely; observation, recording, and note taking. There are three instruments used, namely; researcher, observation, and video recorder. The data obtained were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method. This research discovered two findings as the aims of this research. First, the most frequent type of speech act used by the children of 3-5 years old student is directive, which is followed by commissive, representative, and expressive. Specifically, (1) the children used 6% utterances in representative category, (2) the children used 44% utterances in directive category, (3) the children used 24% utterances in expressive category, (4) the children used 26% utterances in commissive category. Second, the children of 3-5 years old students mostly created speech act for the competitive function, which is followed by convivial function, and conflictive function. Whereas collaborative function did not appear in those children’s communication. The implication of this study is to learn and master pragmatics, especially in the theory of speech acts to be able to understand the speaker’s intention so that the communication expressed is able to be fulfilled.

Commisive is kind of speech acts that used by the speakers to commit themselves to some future course action. They express the speaker’s attention to do something on some future action. This study concerned on finding out types of commissive speech act used by characters in the movie John Wick Chapter 2, as well as analyzing the meaning of the utterances. This study applied the theory of pragmatics from Yule (1996) to find out the types of commissive speech act, theory of meaning from Thomas (1995) to analyse the implied meaning and supported by the theory of context of situation from Halliday and Hasan (1989). The data were collected by using observation method and analysed by descriptive qualitative method.  The finding is presented in formal and informal way. Our finding shows that there are four types of commisive speech acts which predominantly used by the characters in the movie John Wick Chapter 2, they are: refusal (12%), warning (48%), promise (12%) and threat (28%).    Keywords: commissive, speech act, utterance, meaning
