We are currently in an era of information explosion that affects our life in one way or another. Because of this, the transformation of huge databases into knowledge has become one of the tasks of greatest interest to society in general. Big Data was born as an instrument for knowledge due to the inability of current computer systems to store and process large volumes of data. The knowledge society arises from the use of technologies such as Big Data. The purpose of this article is to analyze the influence of Big Data on the knowledge society through a review of the state of the art supported by research articles and books published in the last 15 years, which allow us to put these two terms into context, understand their relationship and highlight the influence of Big Data as a generator of knowledge for today's society. The concept of Big Data, and its main applications to society will be defined. The concept of the Information Society is addressed and the main challenges it has are established. The relationship between both concepts is determined. And finally the conclusions are established. In order to reduce the digital divide, it is imperative to make profound long-term changes in educational models and public policies on investment, technology and employment that allow the inclusion of all social classes. In this sense, knowledge societies with the help of Big Data are called to be integrative elements and transform the way they are taught and learned, the way they are investigated, new social and economic scenarios are simulated, the brand decisions in Companies and share knowledge.

This book charts the way the English Civil War of the 1640s mutated into a revolution (paving the way for the later execution of King Charles I and the abolition of the monarchy). Focusing on parliament’s most militant supporters, the book reconstructs the origins and nature of the most radical forms of political and religious agitation that erupted during the war, tracing the process by which these forms gradually spread and gained broader acceptance. Drawing on a wide range of manuscript and print sources, the study situates these developments within a revised narrative of the period, revealing the emergence of new practices and structures for the conduct of politics. In the process, the book illuminates the appearance of many of the period’s strikingly novel intellectual currents, including ideas and practices we today associate with western representative democracy—notions of retained natural rights, religious toleration, freedom of the press, and freedom from arbitrary imprisonment. The book also chronicles the way the civil war shattered English Protestantism—leaving behind myriad competing groupings, including congregationalists, baptists, antinomians, and others—while examining the relationship between this religious fragmentation and political change. Finally, the book traces the gradual appearance of openly anti-monarchical, republican sentiment among parliament’s supporters. Radical Parliamentarians provides a new history of the English Civil War, enhancing our understanding of the dramatic events of the 1640s, and shedding light on the long-term political and religious consequences of the conflict.

This paper quantifies and analyses the issue gender digital divide which has been prominent in discussions of the information society. The phenomena digital divide can in brief be defined as inequality of Internet access. But access alone does not solve anything; the actual problem about digital divide is very complex. While it would be very interesting to explore the relationship between the digital divide and gender identity among the multiple faces of digital divide based on age, job, nation, education etc. Researchers were quick to observe that women tend to be latecomers to the digital age. As a consequence, the new technology was popularly portrayed as a male domain.

Big Data is the way to go especially for the large companies which keep a lot of information on the systems. This paper delves into the new challenges associated with big data. It points out safety challenges on Big Data as the main issues that organizations seek to address on a day-to-day basis. These challenges include securing the trusted environments, sufficient access management, performing due diligence, combating AVI vulnerabilities, and security automation. They can be solved by maintaining strict access strategies that only allow their esteemed and responsible employees to login and also set the systems in such a way that they can detect abnormalities and allow for investigations while there is still time. The paper has addressed big data challenges as well as their solutions which are always be considered in the case of the organization as they have long-term consequences if not put into consideration.

Big data and its analytics yield a lot of opportunities to make great progresses in many fields, ranging from economic and business activities to public administration, from national security to scientific researches and so on. However, the most noticeable point is that healthcare data has been recently identified as a prime example of big data. Undoubtedly, efficient use of healthcare resources has become a key factor in improving overall healthcare system. But for managing healthcare data and obtaining potential results, we need integration and sharing of data that ultimately demand the concept of distributed system. The paper in its first phase gives an overview on big data and healthcare data from different aspects. A review on the state-of-the-art distributed file system (Hadoop) is conducted in this stage too. The primary aim of this phase is to provide an overall picture on big data as well as healthcare data for non-expert readers. In the next phase, a cloud-based e-health system is proposed for the expert audiences. The expected promising characteristics as well as the managerial implications of the model are highlighted in the analysis section.

Traditionally and throughout the twentieth century, classes have been important for Danish politics and political cleavages, including conflicts related to the development of the comprehensive Danish welfare state. However, since the 1970s, and especially in the twenty-first century, the importance of class has changed and somewhat diminished. Some claim that classes are withering away, whereas the main claim in this chapter is that class relations and the relationship between class and politics have changed but not necessarily disappeared. Building on the most recent state-of-the-art research on these changes, the chapter takes a long-term perspective and describes and discusses changes in class relations in Denmark, as well as changes in the relationship between class and party choice. Following international research, the chapter uses different conceptualizations of class and class resources, including class as occupation, class as economic resources, and class as cultural and educational resources.

This article considers the relationship between Big Data and the athlete. Where Beer and Hutchins have focused on Big Data and sport, this article concentrates on the athlete’s potential response to Big Data monitoring. Drawing on the work of Andrejevic, and Kennedy and Moss, the project speaks to the Big Data–athlete relation through the theoretical framework of the digital divide. It describes Big Data and its relation to the digital divide before tracing out how athletes might respond to Big Data monitoring by presenting concerns about privacy and/or embracing a quantified self. Considering these responses provides a starting point for further work on how athletes should treat Big Data and its implications for sport.

= The aim of this paper is to present the role of privacy literacy as a relatively new concept in bridging the digital divide, to link the bridging of the digital divide with the role of libraries in achieving a higher level of critical information literacy, and to place digital inclusion and privacy literacy in a broader theoretical framework. For this purpose, the paper researches the basic concepts of social exclusion and social inclusion, digital divide and digital inclusion. Furthermore, the role of critical information literacy in the information society and the so-called platform society is taken into consideration; and the role of libraries in privacy literacy is indicated, with the aim of reducing the digital divide and increasing digital inclusion. The digital divide is one of the biggest obstacles to the knowledge society, and exclusion from the information society is a global problem. The paper explains that libraries are suitable places to combat social isolation and that they play an important role in strengthening social cohesion. It has also been shown that people with lower levels of education, as well as those with lower incomes, are more at risk of digital exclusion, while help in getting out of such a problem can be found in privacy literacy.

The deployment of mobile telephone infrastructures in Catalonia constitutes a key factor for the development of the information society and a cause of public controversy as a consequence of the collective perception of a socially constructed risk in relation to the effects on human health of electromagnetic radiation. This controversy has caused the stagnation of the deployment of infrastructures even when it is supported by a legal framework that were initially designed to regulate and promote said deployment by fostering cooperation between the different stakeholders. Administrative regulations that were originally passed to promote technological infrastructure become an obstacle to the same on the basis of the conflicts generated by the stakeholders in the process, especially Local Administration and mobile telephone operators. The consequences of this stagnation leads to what is known as the digital divide, i.e. the division between citizens and companies that reside in regions where there is sufficient coverage and those that cannot access it. This phenomenon is even more pronounced when it comes to the implantation of third generation mobile telephony, which requires the installation of a larger number of antennas. In this context, it is highly recommendable for proposals to be formulated for efficient local administrative- uridical praxis.
