Kimono (a traditional Japanese garment worn by women) has played an important role in Japanese indigenous cultural origins. Ecological and sustainable ideas have inherently existed in kimono culture within this lifestyle. Since the United Nations announced the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, the Japanese government has focused on creating healthy spaces with a sustainable direction in mind. However, textile-related product recycling rates were relatively low in Japan at the time. This empirical study used SDGs as a conceptual framework to examine Japanese college students’ perceptions of kimono upcycling practices and challenges. A mixed method was used to analyze the data. An open-ended questionnaire was distributed to college students in June 2019 in Liberal Arts at a national women’s university (n=155). The findings showed that interest in kimono upcycling moderately correlated to those and an interest in western garments upcycling (.578; p<.01). The relationship between these variables was significant (Chi-square: 48.471; p <.001). In the qualitative analysis, a coding method was used to explore common themes of students’ awareness and knowledge of upcycling kimono practices and found four strong themes to be present. The students perceived that upcycled kimono items connected to preserving family memories, whereas others noted upcycled items were used for sustainable resources. Also, three common challenges were found: practicality, technical issues, and people’s awareness. Some students also associated items with Japanese cultural preservation. College students’ attitudes and perceptions towards cultural sustainability engagement could therefore be a crucial mediator during sustainable development drives.

The research challenge in the problem of the sustainable development goals is to find solutions for development control through the application of green roofs in residential areas, which is the feasibility of the role of the community. This research was based on the discipline of architecture by considering the role of the community in managing architectural green-space substitution. The purpose of this study was to identify patterns of the role of the community for green roofs feasibility based on housing, conducted in some parts of Sumatra, Java, and East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Data were collected using a survey questionnaire. Data were calculated based on percentages and analyzed using the chi-square method. The results indicated that the optimization of the community role was needed for the sustainability of the green-roof from all economic levels, both urban and rural. The aspect of public awareness and knowledge of the benefits of the green-roof is very high, but the object of the green-roof in Indonesia is still very limited because participation is still not optimal. Therefore, it is necessary to promote the green-roof application to the community by adapting local culture in sustainable green-roof technology innovation.

This is the third of three conferences over the past year focused on the effects of digital technologies on the cultures of the Southeast Asian nations for which I have been invited to deliver a talk. The first time was related to the roles of cultural heritage in the 4.0 industrial revolution. The second reexamined culture after the digital turn. This time, the task is articulating art, design, and education to reinforce cultural sustainability in the disruptive era. Hence, I propose to reflect on the growing recognition of the linkages between biological and cultural diversity, particularly in terms of the sustainable development paradigm. In view of that, I want to invite everyone to consider the potentials of AMDAL Kebudayaan (cultural environmental impact assessment) in policies and in application. Keywords: AMDAL Kebudayaan, biocultural diversity, arts, cultural sustainability

Reflecting the interest in sustainable development (SD), researches on the attitude toward SD have been steadily conducted for various groups. To explore the characteristics of awareness and attitude of college students majoring in landscape architecture towards the concept of SD, this study has two research questions; to analysis latent classes according to the learning participation pattern (research question 1), and to explore student characteristics that influence the classification of each classes (research question 2). The latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify the combination of relationships found in the classes based on similar patterns among the characteristics of people rather than the relationship between observed variables. A total of 495 students majoring in landscape architecture, 222 males and 275 females, are participated in this study. The results of this study are as follows. First, six latent classes were extracted in relation to attitudes toward SD. Second, college students majoring in landscape architecture tend to view the concept of SD from an ‘environmental’ and ‘environmental and economic harmony’ point of view rather than from an ‘environmental, social, and economic’ point of view. Third, grades and educational experiences were found to have a significant effect on the probability of belonging to a specific latent class for SD. Finally, based on these results, we suggest a method for organizing interdisciplinary courses to comprehensively access the ‘environmental, social and economic’ areas of the curriculum.

In order to promote the sustainable development of students’ learning capabilities, students are expected to take an active role in the feedback process. Ideally, students should not only actively interpret and act on the feedback received from their teachers, but they should also serve as feedback generators for their peers and themselves. Our study aimed to explore Chinese university English-as-a-Foreign-Language (EFL) students’ perceptions of the feedback practices in their classrooms and their feelings about teacher feedback, peer review and self-review as credible feedback sources. Adopting a qualitative research design, we recruited three teachers together with seven to eight of their students (in total 23 students) from two universities in Northwest China. Data were collected by using focus group interviews and classroom observations. Findings indicated that students relied on teachers to provide informative feedback to help them progress. They also attached limited value to either peer or self-review. Our interview data revealed three possible reasons for students’ devaluation of peers and themselves as feedback sources: insufficient understanding of students’ roles and responsibilities in the feedback process, perceived limited capability and capacity to generate quality feedback; and affective and relational concerns if engaging in the feedback process. These findings highlight the need for teachers to foster student feedback literacy, and hence help them utilize different feedback sources to enhance their learning and sustainable development.

Self-survival innovation teams composed of college students are considered incubators for future entrepreneurs. Stability is the prerequisite for team survival, while sustainable development is the necessary condition for their continuous progress. The development of members and the team are interrelated. In the continuous development of the team, the members, who contribute to the development of the team, change iteratively, while the team provides opportunities and platforms for the development of the members. However, at present, there are few researches on the sustainable development of the team and the data analysis on the correlation between the member development and the team construction. Therefore, in order to make a systematic analysis on the sustainable development ability of the team, this paper adopts questionnaires to obtain relevant information about college students and their innovation team. SPSS software (25.0) is used to make statistical analysis on the current development of college students’ individual ability and innovation team. Based on this, the paper puts forward analysis strategies for the personal development of college students and the construction of self-survival innovation team.

Good governance can be presented as the perfect base to achieve the sustainable development strategy. In turn, decentralisation principle is considered as the main mechanism that works as the base for the good governance, in addition to the accountability, predictability, and transparency. This article is a part of a field study aimed to explore and investigate the reality of the sustainable development management in Yemen and India. The ‘Good Governance’ is an important element. The aim of this study is to investigate and explore the extent and the level of adopting the Good Governance principles, as a requirement for achieving sustainable development, in the managerial activities in both countries Yemen and India. The result of an analysis by the chi-square (χ2) test indicated that there is a weakness of applying the decentralisation principle in Yemen. The study ascertains the weakness of the accountability principle, the deficit of the predictability principle, and the weakness of the transparency principle among the managerial practices in Yemen and the lack of analysis in the governmental departments, suggesting the needs to enhance the related process. Although the findings showed that the situation in India is much better compared to Yemen, compared to the developed countries we can say that India also needs more enhancement in this regard in order to facilitate the achievement of the sustainable development for societies in both urban and rural areas.
