Corruption causes substantial social and economic harm. The South African government’s attempts to combat corruption have relied on strengthening legislation, introducing statutory investigative bodies, initiating public anti-corruption campaigns, and appealing to the integrity of individuals. Yet corruption remains a big problem in South Africa. However, one approach that has yet to be pursued is intelligence-led policing (ILP). ILP is a model built around proactive risk assessment and risk management. This article explains how ILP can be used to investigate corruption in South Africa.

The purpose of this study was to determine the supply chain risk management (SCRM) strategies that South African third-party logistics (3PL) service providers use to mitigate risks, the extent to which they adopt these strategies and the benefits derived thereof. An exploratory and descriptive method technique was adopted. The empirical study comprised of email surveys administered to 398 supply chain managers employed by South African 3PLs. The findings reveal that respondents place greater importance on risk identification than on the other SCRM strategies. Risk assessment attained the lowest rating, implying that 3PL providers placed the least importance on this risk assessment strategy. Risk response and risk monitoring, reporting and control are all adopted to a significantly lesser extent. The findings also revealed that 3PL providers derive significant benefits from all SCRM strategies. A limitation of this study is that not all 3PL providers affiliated with SAAFF participated. In addition, because only members of senior management were included in the study, the opinions of operational and tactical staff were not obtained. The study contributes to the current body of knowledge on SCRM by exploring how 3PL providers in a developing country, such as South Africa, assess supply chain risks, the strategies they have in place to respond to these risks, and the mechanisms in place to monitor and control SCM risks.

Strengthening risk management and control of urban rainwater resources utilization is the key to ensuring the sustainable and efficient use of urban rainwater resources. On the basis of comprehensive research on urban rainwater utilization, the definition and connotation of urban rainwater utilization emphasizing the attributes of resource utilization are proposed, and the definition and function model of urban rainwater utilization risk are established. Based on the whole process of the development and utilization of urban rainwater resources including external environment, urban natural and social characteristics, rainwater utilization engineering systems, and project operation management, the risk assessment index system for urban rainwater utilization and risk evaluation model by using Analytic Hierarchy Process are established, and a comprehensive risk assessment standard based on risk value and risk tolerance, as well as residual risk management and control theory and risk management methods are put forward. The results of research on risk assessment and control of rainwater resources utilization in Xifeng District of Qingyang City shows that the main risks of rainwater utilization in this district are as follows in order of severity: policies and regulations, economy developing level, maintenance costs, precipitation and natural eutrophication. Risk assessment shows that the risks are low and acceptable and thus can be reduced by strengthening daily monitoring and control.

It is well known to everyone that construction field is a very dangerous workplace especially if health and safety regulations are not applied in a professional way. In this project a field of survey was conducted through making interviews with experts in risk management and in health and safety risk assessment in the construction field.  In order to understand and evaluate the type of risks and hazards which are normally found at any construction project, the issue in sites were analyzed in five different categories. Analysis were done based on the responses from the professionals involved in the construction site through using software.  The aim of this project is study the awareness of  the participants of carrying out health and safety risk assessments in a professional way, to identify the most risks found in the construction field such as; working at heights, working without using the safety equipment, working on unstable roofs. From the studies, it was concluded the following points  Recognize and control hazards in your workplace , set risk management standards, based on acceptable safe practices and legal requirements, save costs by being proactive instead of reactive. All the respondents who were part of this project have said that it is very important to apply the occupational risk assessment matrix with considering the local regulations of the country.

Purpose: Employee turnover presents arguably the biggest threat to business sustainability and is a dynamic challenge faced by businesses globally. In South Africa, organisations compete to attract and retain skilled employees in an environment characterised by a burgeoning skills deficit. Turnover risk management is becoming an important strategy to ensure organisational stability and promote the effective retention of employees. The purpose of this research was to contribute to the practice of turnover risk management by proposing an approach and constructing a model to predict employee turnover based on demographic characteristics readily available in a human resource information system.Design: An exploratory research design was employed. Secondary quantitative data were extracted from an existing human resources database and analysed. Data obtained for 2592 employees in a general insurance company based in South Africa and Namibia formed the basis for the analysis. Logistic regression analysis was employed to predict employee turnover using various demographic characteristics available within the database. A likelihood ratio test was used to build a predictive model and the Akaike information criterion and Schwarz criterion were used to test how much value each variable added to the model and if its inclusion was warranted. The model was tested by conducting statistical tests of the significance of the coefficients. Deviance and Pearson goodness-of-fit statistics as well as the R-square test of significance were used. The overall goodness-of-fit of the model was also tested using the Hosmer and Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test.Findings: The current findings provide partial support for a predictive model explaining employee turnover. The model tested 14 demographic variables and the following five variables were found to have statistically significant predictive value: age, years of service, cost centre, performance score and the interaction between number of dependants and years of service. It is proposed that these five demographic variables be used as a model to help identify employees at risk of turnover or termed as flight risks.Practical implications: Gaining an understanding of the factors that influence employee voluntary turnover can be instrumental in sustaining workforce stability. The proposed model could help human resources professionals identify employees at risk of turnover using data that are readily available to them. This will further enable the use of targeted interventions to prevent turnover before it happens. Decreased levels of turnover will result in cost saving, enhanced talent management and greater competitive advantage.

Project success depends on the ability to respond to risks and make correct decisions in a timely manner. The project approach provides a better framework for implementing a new management system into the company’s business processes. The risk management framework developed by the company comprises a risk management infrastructure, a set of standards, human resources, and a risk management information system. To improve staff compliance, it is necessary to provide training and to communicate the goals of the project effectively. It is also important to develop a motivation system because well trained and motivated staff are able to work more efficiently.

This study was conceptualised in order to assess the strategies used to incorporate the homeland of KaNgwane into Mpumalanga province after the cessation of apartheid in 1994. The specific objective of the study was to investigate the compliance of records and archives with the National Archives and Records Service of South Africa Act (Act No 43 of 1996), during the incorporation of the homeland of KaNgwane into Mpumalanga. The study adopted a qualitative methodology through document analysis, interviews and observations. The key findings revealed that the archives of the former homeland of Kangwane were not aligned with the requirements of the National Archives and Records Service of South Africa Act (Act No.43 of 1996.) Institutions seem to lack experience when it comes to the challenges of storing records and implementing arrangement and control systems. The frequent lack of a records management policy and few to no staff with record-keeping and archival backgrounds was also a concern. A shortage of space to store records safely was also one of the major issues that the study uncovered. There appears to be no concerted effort to retain important historical records. Many records are stored in several different locations in government buildings.  I conclude that archives play an essential role to the nation as the institutional memory.
