Entikong Lama is a densely populated residential area and the center of economic activity located on the riverbank. However, there was poor management of municipal wastewater that influences water quality of the river. Moreover, the river water is used by society for drinking, cooking, bathing, washing and toileting. Hence, municipal wastewater management is needed to prevent river from polluted municipal wastewater. This research is a social analysis to investigate social perspectives on wastewater management planning. This analysis is imperative to find out the social response and willingness of the society towards municipal wastewater management. The social survey was carried out using the interview and questionnaire method. This research found that about 93% of the household already had water closets (WC) and 83% already had septic tanks. The problem that occurs is that the septic tank has never been sucked up because there is no desludging service. This is due to the fact that there are no Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP) facilities in the Entikong Lama. Later, communal Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) planning program was offered to the society. About 72% of the household agreed to the communal WWTP program and the rest refused or abstained. Even though it reached high positive response from the society, there were some considerations of the communal WWTP program:  the location of the communal WWTP, the clarity of those who manage the wastewater plant and the amount of fees charged to the society.

In recent years a completely autotrophic nitrogen removal process based on Anammox biomass has been tested in a few European countries in order to treat anaerobic supernatant and to increase the COD/N ratio in municipal wastewater. This work reports experimental results on a possible technical solution to upgrade the S. Colombano treatment plant which treats wastewater from the Florentine urban area. The idea is to use 50% of the volume of the anaerobic digester in order to treat external sewage sludge (as septic tank sludge) together with waste activated sludge and to treat the resulting effluent on a SHARON-ANAMMOX process in order to remove nitrogen from the anaerobic supernatant. Anaerobic co-digestion, tested in a 200 L pilot plant, enables low cost treatment of septic tank sludge and increases biogas production; however, it also increases the nitrogen load re-circulated to the WWTP, where nitrogen removal efficiency is already low (<50%), due to the low COD/N ratio, which limits predenitrification efficiency. Experimental results from a SHARON process tested in a lab-scale pilot plant show that nitrite oxidising bacteria are washed-out and steady nitrite production can be achieved at retention times in the range 1–1.5 days, at 35 °C. In a lab-scale SBR reactor, coupled with a nitration bioreactor, maximum specific nitrogen removal rate under nitrite-limiting conditions (with doubling time equal to about 26 days at 35 °C) was equal to 0.22 kgN/kgSSV/d, about 44 times the rate measured in inoculum Anammox sludge. Finally, a cost analysis of the proposed upgrade is reported.

This paper studies through project cases the treatment effect of integrated technique of anaerobic filter and constructed wetland on domestic wastewater in military camps, and the method for preventing the blocking of anaerobic filter and constructed wetland packing. The results show that its average removal rate of COD, NH4+-N, TP and SS is 83.1%, 37.5%, 49.8% and 91.5% respectively, with effluent meeting the standard of Grade II in Discharge Standard of Pollutants for Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant (GB18918-2002); as planned, two anaerobic filters, one for operation and the other laying fallow at a alternate period of 6 months, in combination of the design of spoil disposal, can effectively prevent the packing layer from being blocked; being preprocessed, anaerobic filter can effectively prevent the packing layer of constructed wetland from being blocked; in case of a certain difference in elevation, the integrated technique can achieve unpowered operation. Besides, it is easy to implement and manage at a low operational cost without professional technician, and can treat decentralized domestic wastewater, therefore, is suitable for camps.

A novel alternating oxic-anoxic operation mode of shortcut nitrification-denitrification was developed in a sequencing batch reactor at ambient temperature. Operational parameters favorable for maintaining the shortcut nitrification-denitrification were investigated and optimized. The experiments showed that alternating oxic-anoxic shortcut nitrification-denitrification system was able to be an independent treatment process in domestic wastewater treatment. And the optimization approach was so efficient that the main pollutant discharge targets achieved Standard A of the first class in "Discharge standard of pollutants for municipal wastewater treatment plant". Moreover, the reliability of the operation strategy in this experimentation was proved, which indicated the excellent nitrogen removal performances.

Abstract One of the basic threats in terms of concrete used for tanks or ducts applied in wastewater management is the phenomenon of biogenic sulphate corrosion (BSC). BSC is a particular case of corrosion caused by the action of sulphuric acid (IV), which is formed as a result of a number of biochemical processes, which can take place, e.g. in an environment encountered within the aforementioned structures. Ions present in sulphuric acid react with cement hydration products, which leads to replacing the primary cement matrix components with compounds easily-soluble or highly-swelling during crystallization. The outcome of advanced corrosion is usually an observed formation of a white, amorphous, sponge-like mass, which is easily separated from the underlying concrete. The article discusses a case study of a BSC process in a newly constructed primary settling tank in a municipal wastewater treatment plant.

Industrial wastewater management is still neglected in a dominating part of the companies in Sweden and it is not considered as a threat to health of man and environment. The Environmental Science  &Engineering Research Group (ESERG) at LNU has under financial support of KK-foundation and large/medium-size companies in Southern Sweden been studied. Even though the problem has been studied for half a century there is knowledge missing and the stormwater is still a growing problem. Every time rain falls, it washes off oils, microorganisms, litter, sediments, fertilizers, and foreign chemicals from streets, parking lots, lawns, dumpster pads, metal roofs as well from landfill, industrial and harbour sites. Industrial facilities with large impervious surfaces for different types of handling of materials are generating stormwater effluents of different qualities which vary during different time periods and same stands for process water generated of a variety of volumes and often of high pollutant concentrations. In some catchment areas, industrial and small business activities can release a significant portion of some pollutants that ends up directly into receiving waters but also at the municipal wastewater treatment plant. Small businesses and enterprises do not pay attention to routine operations and neither have they had the economic resources to implement preventive measures, treatment facilities or to employ expertise on their particular environmental issues. The project “Development of an Integrated Approach for Industrial Wastewater and Stormwater Management in the Wood Industry Sector” has generated new knowledge about industrial waste water treatment that will be presented at the Linnaeus Ecotech 10 international conference.

The Ciliwung River is one of the main rivers flowing in the DKI Jakarta area. Ciliwung has an area of 370.8 km2, with a length of 124.1 km. The Ciliwung River contributes greatly to the communities in three big cities, namely Bogor, Depok and Jakarta as a source of drinking water, a source of raw water and a source of water for irrigation. The condition of household wastewater is currently discharged directly or indirectly into river water bodies. gray water is immediately discharged into the water body without being treated. Blackwater is treated to inadequate septic tanks or discharged directly into water bodies. This condition certainly requires a fast and precise solution and handling. In terms of domestic wastewater management, both gray water and black water, at this time Cililitan village is not included in the area that is accessible to centralized wastewater piping or off-site systems and does not have land that can be used to make a communal system waste treatment so that most of the households still throw away directly into the river or using a septic tank without regular desludging. The purpose of this study is to identify the current waste management conditions in Cililitan Village and provide recommendations for the selection of a sustainable domestic waste management system that is acceptable to the community and safe for the environment.

Abstract. The urgency of the problem of local biological treatment of domestic wastewater from housing in non-canalized areas with improving the quality of treated wastewater to the level of requirements for discharge into fishery bodies of water is considered. The analysis of the state of local wastewater treatment is given. Existing technological schemes and methods of local sewage, which are used for sewage treatment, are considered. The results of theoretical and experimental studies of a complex of a local anaerobic-aerobic biological treatment of domestic wastewater from housing in non-canalized areas at the low-productivity plants are presented. The results of theoretical and experimental researches of complex of local anaerobic-aerobic biological purification of domestic wastewater of habitation in non-canalized areas at the low-productivity plants are given. On the basis of the analysis of work and embodiment of low-productivity plants, used in home and foreign practice of local treatment of domestic wastewater the expediency of application flowing multistage anaerobic-aerobic biological purification of domestic wastewater with use of communities of attached and free-swimming microorganisms is shown. The proposed low-productivity plant, which includes a three-stage aerobic biological treatment of anaerobically treated wastewater is described. The use of ruff fillers for the retention of hydrobionts gives the opportunity to clear salvo discharge, rapid restoration of the activity of the ruff fillers (for example, in power outages). The ruff fillers make it possible to organize an appropriate trophic chain of hydrobionts, which dramatically reduces the amount of excess biomass and the removal of suspensions in treated wastewater. Using the experiments in laboratory conditions and at real industrial treatment plant of a new design there were received parameters of work of stages of anaerobic and aerobic biological purification, the law of nitrification and denitrification processes, the law of specific speed of oxidation of organic pollution in specific conditions of anaerobic-aerobic technology; the opportunity of reception of quality of treated wastewater at the level of the requirements of the specifications for dump of drains in fishing reservoirs is proved.

The wastewater from the urban commune of Mhaya (Morocco) was rejected directly into Ben Kazza river without treatment. This situation caused a widespread, massive, varied and insidious pollution of the environment. A wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) has been constructed in 2010 in order to preserve the nature surrounding the center. Called Oxylag, the plant has a nominal capacity of 6000 Equivalent Inhabitants. It is based on intensive treatment and it is considered as pilot and unique in Morocco. The treatment is consisting on three basins ventilated by insufflation of artificial air and a basin of finishing. The present study aim is the assessment of the purification performance of this plant during 2012, through the analysis of the pollution parameters (COD, BOD5 and TSS), which is the subject of the Moroccan standards on the quality of domestic wastewater defined by the decree Number 1607-06 of 25 July 2006. The results show a high purification performance in terms of carbon pollution removal (93% for BOD5, 79% for COD and 64% for TSS).

The assessment of the ratio of self-purification processes in the natural environment, including the water bodies of streams and rivers is possible by the means of the numerical modelling. Nonetheless, the reliability of results of the qualitative numerical calculations may be affected by the quality of the collected input data and efficiency of the model calibration. The commonly required input data include pollutants characteristics and coefficients for empirical equations of their transport and decay, while calibration of a model requires series of measurements of selected pollutants concentration in water. This paper presents studies of concentration of pollutants measured in the treated sanitary wastewater discharged to the Bystrzyca river from municipal wastewater treatment plant, and their concentrations measured directly in the river, above and below the location of discharge point. The performed qualitative measurements of treated sewage discharged from municipal wastewater treatment plant and water of the Bystrzyca river included determination of COD, BOD5, N-NH4, N-NO2, N-NNO3, TKN, TN, TP and TSS concentration. The presented results of measurements are the first step in development and calibration of the model, allowing to successfully predict the influence of discharged sanitary wastewater on quality of water in the river.
