Carcass conformation is a very important parameter in assessing the overall appearance and meatiness of broilers. This study evaluates the effect of protease supplemented to reduced protein diets on production traits, dressed carcass weight and conformation measures in fast-growing Cobb 500 and slow-growing Master Gris broilers over a fattening period of 49 days. At slaughter, the following measurements were taken: pre-slaughter body weight (BW), conventionally dressed carcass weight and abdominal fat weight. Following carcass dissection into primal cuts, absolute conformation values, including metatarsus length (ML), keel length (KL), breast depth (BD), breast angle (BA) and thigh girth (TG), were determined. For carcass conformation evaluation purposes, index values of carcass conformation measures BW/ML, BW/KL, BW/BD and BW/TG were identified. Genotype and sex had a significant effect on dressed carcass weight and all conformation measures, whereas the effect of different protein levels in protease-supplemented diets was significant only in Master Gris, for metatarsus length and the following indices: BW/ML, BW/KL and BW/TG.

This paper presents research results on the effect of protease on the dressing percentage of conventionally dressed carcass and body conformation in broiler chickens. Broiler diet was supplemented with 0.2% protease (group E-I) and 0.3% protease (group E-II), and protein content in the feed was reduced by 4% (E-I) and 6% (E-II) through a decrease in soybean meal content. Fast-growing Cobb 500 broilers were used for a 63-day fattening trial. Body conformation measurement included absolute carcass conformation measures (metatarsus length, keel length, breast depth, breast angle, thigh girth) and relative body conformation measures - conformation indices (body weight/metatarsus length, body weight/keel length, body weight/breast depth, body weight/thigh girth). Results showed a significant effect of sex on the dressing percentage of conventionally dressed carcass and all body conformation measures, whereas diet had a significant effect on the dressing percentage of conventionally dressed carcass and breast angle values.

Two experiments were conducted to note the broilers' response to graded levels of dietary protein (CP). Female birds were fed one of six diet series ranging from 22–20–18 to 18–18–16% CP from 0–21 days, 21–35 days and 35–42 days, respectively. Males were fed diet series from 28–24–22 to 20–18–16 over the same time periods (Table 1). Each diet program was tested with four replicate groups of 60 birds. Body weight and feed intake were monitored at time of feed change-over and at termination of experiment. Twenty birds per replicate were used for carcass analyses. Females were heavier when diets of higher protein content were offered (P < 0.05). These birds consumed more feed (P < 0.05) but exhibited feed efficiency that was not different to birds fed diets of lower protein content. Carcass weight and breast meat yield were not influenced by diet, although higher-protein diet series resulted in reduced proportional abdominal fat pad size (P < 0.01). Diet protein had no effect on body weight of male birds at 42 d (P > 0.05). Male birds reared on a program involving die lowest CP levels of 20–18–16 exhibited inferior feed utilization relative to birds from most other treatments (P < 0.05). Programs with low-protein diets for males resulted in reduced carcass weight, reduced breast meat yield and increased abdominal fat deposition (P < 0.05). It is concluded that male birds can be reared on very low protein diets without loss of weight, although carcass quality will be inferior. Female broilers are heavier when diet protein intake is increased through use of diets with higher protein content. Key words: Broiler, diet protein, performance, carcass composition

Abstract The present study was carried out to compare the growth performance and carcass yield of broiler chickens reared in semi-intensive and conventional systems (Ross 308, n=120). Chickens were raised in a pen on wooden shavings for 21 days. On day 21 of age, chicks were assigned to 2 treatments (indoor treatment and semi-intensive treatment). The experiment was conducted at until 6 weeks of age. Production system has a significant effect on wing (P less than 0.05) and heart weight (P less than 0.01), but has no any effect on final body weight, hot or cold carcass weight, thigh, breast, back and neck, gizzard, liver and abdominal fat weights (P>0.05).  The final body weight, hot and cold carcass weight, thigh, wings and heart weights were affected by sex of birds (p less than 0.05) while breast, back, liver, gizzard and abdominal fat were not affected by sex (P>0.05). The nutrient level of carcass parts was not influenced by production system or sex (P>0.05). In our study, breast of birds reared under semi-intensive system had significantly lower ‘L’ (P less than 0.05), higher ‘a’ statistically different (P less than 0.01); while ‘b’ value was significantly (P less than 0.01) higher in skin of semi-intensive reared birds

Increasing people’s demand for rabbit meat was the reason to increase carcass percentage and decrease fat content, especially abdominal fat, so it can increase the meat productivity of rabbit. To increase rabbit productivity, it could be reached by giving temulawak (Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb) flour in the diet condition. Temulawak, has curcumin and essential oil contents which can stimulate the passion to eat and stimulate the liver cells to increase bile product, so that the bile secretion occurs well and gives good growth. The aim of this research was to determine the influence of temulawak flour addition in ration on carcass and abdominal fat percentage of male local rabbit. This research was conducted in RT 04/21, Gulon village, Jebres district, Surakarta, Central Java for eight weeks, started on November 28th, 2007 until January 8th, 2008. This research used one-way classification of Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 24 male local rabbits, about two months old with body weight 727.9±97.3 g. It consisted of four treatments (P0, P1, P2, P3), each treatment consisted of three replications, and each replication consisted of two male local rabbits. The treatments given were: P0 = as control, consisted of peanut tree (rendeng) 70% + concentrate 30%; P1 = control + 2% temulawak flour; P2 = control + 4% temulawak flour; and P3 = control + 6% temulawak flour. Variable measured were body weight, carcass weight, carcass percentage, carcass conformation, and the percentage of abdominal fat. The results showed that the average of four treatments (P0, P1, P2, and P3) in series for body weight were 1,014.333; 1,002.667; 961.667; and 944.667 grams, respectively. The averages of carcass weight were 428.667, 429.001, 410.667, and 390.333 grams. The carcass percentages were 42.297, 42.771, 42.717, and 40.997%. The carcass conformations were 41.593, 43.117, 40.147, and 40.450. In this research, no abdominal fat was found. The analysis of variance showed that the result was not significant in every parameter. It caused by temulawak flour supplementation until level 6% could not improve eat passion on male local rabbit yet, so that its consumption was still not significant (P≥0.05). The conclusion which could be taken from this research was the addition of temulawak flour in ration until level 6% had no effect on body weight, carcass weight, carcass percentage, carcass conformation, and the percentage of abdominal fat of male local rabbit.

This study evaluates the effect of different crude protein levels in broiler diets supplemented with 0.2% and 0.3% protease enzyme (Ronozyme Pro Act) on dressed carcass weight and dressing percentage during two fattening periods (49 and 63 days). The fast-growing strain Cobb 500 was used. At the end of the fattening trial i.e. at 49 and 63 days, 10 male and 10 female birds were randomly sacrificed from each experimental group to determine body weights and conventionally dressed, ready-to-roast and ready-to-grill carcass weights. The data obtained were used to calculate the dressing percentages of the differently dressed carcasses. Results indicated that carcass weights and dressing percentages were not affected by diet (P>0.05), but also showed that the increase in the length of the fattening period by two weeks (from 7 to 9 weeks) led to increased carcass weights, while dressing percentages decreased (P<0.05).

The objective of the study was to evaluate feeding effect of microparticle protein derived from soybean meal and fish meal combined with Lactobacillus sp. at 1.2 mL on physiological condition of digestive tract and productivity of broiler. Total of 192 broiler, with initial body weight was 481.0 ± 67.2 g, given dietary treatment starting on day 21 until day 42. The experiment was assigned in a completely randomized design with 8 treatments and 4 replications. Dietary treatment were 21% intact protein (T0), 18% intact protein (T1), 21% microparticle protein (T2), 18% microparticle protein (T3), T0+Lactobacillus sp.1.2 mL (T4), T1+Lactobacillus sp.1.2 mL (T5), T2+Lactobacillus sp.1.2 mL (T6), T3+Lactobacillus sp.1.2 mL (T7). Parameters measured were total ileal lactic acid bacteria (LAB), Coliform and pH, rate of passage, daily body weight gain (DWG) and also carcass weight. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and followed by Duncan multiple range test (P<0.05). Experimental results showed that microparticle protein diet added with Lactobacillus sp. (P<0.05) increased total LAB and DWG, but decreased Coliform population, and slowed down the rate of passage. However, carcass weight was not significantly affected by treatments. Feeding microparticle protein (18%) with addition of Lactobacillus sp. (1.2 mL) can improve to be better condition of digestive tract based on higher LAB and lower Coliform populations, and increase daily body weight gain with the same carcass weight.

A study was carried out on six hill farms in Northern Ireland over 2 years (1996–1998) to investigate the effect of ewe and ram breed on ewe prolificacy, lamb viability and weaned lamb output. On each farm, groups of 40 Scottish Blackface ewes (mature weight of 53·8 kg) were mated to Scottish Blackface, Blue-Faced Leicester and Texel rams. Similarly, groups of 40 Wicklow Cheviot ewes (mature weight 63·7 kg) were mated to Cheviot, Suffolk and Texel rams. All ewe×ram breed combinations were present on each farm. Overall, ewe prolificacy was similar in Blackface and Cheviot ewes (1·52 and 1·55 (S.E. 0·026) lambs born/ewe lambed). However, there was a farm×ewe breed interaction (P < 0·001) indicating that, whilst prolificacy was similar in Blackface and Cheviot ewes on the majority of farms (4 out of 6), on one farm prolificacy was higher in Blackface and on another lower, compared with Cheviot ewes. There were no farm×breed interactions for any of the other main production traits. The proportion of ewes lambing without assistance was higher in Cheviot compared with Blackface ewes when crossed with Texel sires (P < 0·001). Cheviot ewes produced heavier Texel-sired lambs compared with Blackface ewes (4·76 versus 4·51 (S.E. 0·076) kg; P < 0·05). Mortality levels were similar in lambs produced from Blackface and Cheviot ewes. The weight of lamb weaned per ewe was higher in Cheviot compared with Blackface ewes (41·5 versus 38·8 (S.E. 1·01) kg/ewe lambed; P < 0·05). However, the weight of lamb weaned per kg of ewe metabolic weight did not differ significantly between the breeds.With Blackface ewes, the proportion of ewes lambing without assistance was lower for Blue-Faced Leicester compared with Blackface sires (P < 0·001). In addition, the proportion of ewes lambing without assistance was lower (P < 0·001) for Texel compared with both Blackface and Blue-Faced Leicester-sired lambs. Lamb birth weights were higher in Blue-Faced Leicester (P < 0·05) and Texel (P < 0·001) compared with Blackface-sired lambs (4·38, 4·51 and 4·09 (S.E. 0·076) kg, respectively). Similarly, the weight of lamb weaned per ewe lambed was higher (P < 0·001) with Blue-Faced Leicester and Texel compared with Blackface sires (39·8, 38·8 and 33·8 (S.E. 1·01) kg, respectively). The carcass weight of the male lambs 3 weeks post-weaning was significantly higher (P < 0·001) in Blue-Faced Leicester and Texel compared with Blackface-sired lambs (12·5, 12·0 and 10·2 (S.E. 0·20) kg, respectively). Carcass conformation classification was higher in Texel compared with Blue-Faced Leicester and Blackface-sired lambs (P < 0·001). Fat classification was higher in Texel (P < 0·01) and Blue-Faced Leicester (P < 0·05) compared with Blackface-sired lambs. With Cheviot ewes, a greater number of ewes lambed unaided (P < 0·05) with Cheviot and Texel compared with Suffolk-sired lambs. The number of lambs born dead was higher (P < 0·01) with Suffolk compared with Cheviot and Texel-sired lambs (0·14, 0·08 and 0·07 (S.E. 0·016) lambs born dead/ewe lambed, respectively). Growth rates were higher in Suffolk compared with Cheviot-sired lambs (P < 0·05). Overall, Suffolk (P = 0·06) and Texel (P < 0·001) sires produced a greater weight of lamb at weaning compared with Cheviot sires (40·0, 41·5 and 36·9 (S.E. 1·01) kg, respectively). Carcass weight of lambs 3 weeks post-weaning was higher for Suffolk (P < 0·05) and Texel (P < 0·01) compared with Cheviot-sired male lambs. Carcass conformation classification was higher in Texel and Suffolk compared with Cheviot-sired (P < 0·001) lambs. Fat classification was also higher in Texel compared with Cheviot-sired lambs (P < 0·05). Carcass chemical composition was not significantly affected by lamb genotype.

Abstract. Litter quality and fast growth rate are the two main issues in broiler welfare. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of genotype and floor material on broiler welfare and behaviour. In the study, slow-growing (Hubbard JA57) and fast-growing (Ross 308) broilers on a slatted floor and deep litter were used; there were four main groups (2 genotype × 2 housing) and each treatment group consisted of 5 replicates. Each replicate group consisted of 10 male chicks, and 200 birds were used in total. The experiment lasted for 8 weeks. The welfare parameters were recorded in weeks 6, 7, and 8, whereas behaviour data were collected in week 8 only. Results showed that welfare parameters of broiler chickens were affected by genotype and floor type. Slow-growing broilers had better welfare parameters than fast-growing broilers. The slatted floor had a positive effect on main welfare parameters of the birds. Slower-growing broilers had a longer distance in the avoidance distance test. Tonic immobility reaction was longer in slow-growing broilers compared to fast-growing broiler. On the other hand, floor type did not affect behaviour parameters. As a conclusion, slow-growing broilers had better welfare parameters than fast-growing broilers and slat flooring could be beneficial to improve broiler welfare, but further behavioural investigations are needed such as dust bathing and walking behaviour.

Abstract. The effects of the increase of body weight of contemporary broilers during growth on functional meat quality and color characteristics of the chicken breast muscle are controversially debated. Therefore, male chickens (n = 264) of a fast-growing commercial broiler (Ross 308) and two slow-growing experimental meat-type chicken lines were compared at equal age and at similar body weight in order to investigate the effect of growth rate on selected functional breast meat traits and meat color. Additionally, the breast meat characteristics of birds with different growth profiles were compared within lines. When the body weight of commercial broilers reached about 40 to 60 % of their growth potential, they exhibited particularly high ultimate pH values compared with slow-growing lines. The ability of the meat of fast-growing broilers to retain water during cooking was impaired (5 to 16 percentage points increased cooking loss compared to slow-growing lines), which, in contrast to pH, was only marginally affected by body weight and/or age at slaughter. No unfavorable correlations of breast meat quality traits with the growth profile, represented by growth curve parameters derived from the Gompertz–Laird equation, were detected within any of the investigated chicken lines. It is noteworthy that the associations of ultimate pH and cooking loss with maximum growth speed indicate a non-linear relationship. Thus, some of the functional characteristics of breast meat of the fast-growing broiler resembled the white-striping defect described for poultry meat, but the hypothesis that selection on increased growth rates is detrimental for meat quality per se could not be confirmed. In fact, an elevated growth potential in particular, i.e., body weight at maturity, could have some beneficial effects for the water-holding capacity of breast meat, regardless of the genotypic growth rate.
