The purpose of this paper is to extend Uzawa?s two-sector model of a national economy to an economy with any number of regions and interregional tourism. The paper studies interregional economic development with interactions between wealth accumulation, economic structure, interregional trade and tourism under assumptions of profit maximization, utility maximization, and perfect competition. The model is unique in interregional neoclassical growth theory in that it introduces endogenous tourism within a general equilibrium framework. The model is built on microeconomic foundations. It not only extends the well-known Solow growth model and the Uzawa two-sector model to a national economy with any number of heterogeneous regional economies, but also introduces tourist flows between regions. We demonstrate that the movement of the J-regional economy can be described by J+1 differential equations. We simulate the movement of a national economy with three regions. We show that the dynamic system has a unique equilibrium. We carry out comparative dynamic analysis with regard to the propensity to tour a region, the cost of travel from one region to another, the total factor productivity of a region?s industrial sector, the total factor productivity of a region?s service sector, the propensity to save, the parameters of a region?s amenity, the propensity to consume housing, and the national population. We demonstrate the dynamic effects of these changes on national GDP, wealth, and tourist patterns.

This article analyzes the structural transformation in 30 emerging market countries (E30) on the dimensions of industry, trade, and urbanization. It finds that first, in the agricultural sector, E30 have contributed greatly to the increase of the global agricultural productivity and the transfer of labor force from the agricultural sector to industry or the service sector. However, these countries still feature a high percentage of agricultural employment, which means there is vast room for shifting the agricultural labor force. Second, in the industrial sector, E30 have made remarkable contributions to the world’s industrial development but have also displayed a trend of premature “deindustrialization.” Third, the service sector has picked up speed and gradually turned into a new driver of economic development in E30. Against this backdrop, E30 face the major challenge of how to cope with the premature deindustrialization and smoothly shift the economic growth engine from the industrial sector to the service sector. Fourth, E30 have become an important force in the world trade, with their trade structure switching from simple, primary, low-value-added goods to sophisticated, high-grade, and high-value-added goods and services. However, some emerging market countries are more susceptible to the impacts of the anti-globalization trend because of their high reliance on foreign trade and improper trade structure. Therefore, how to diversify the economy and enhance its economic resilience holds the key to the sustainable economic development of E30. Fifth, E30 have contributed greatly to world urbanization. As urbanization relies more on the service sector than on the industrial sector, it is vital to properly strike a balance between industrialization and urbanization, and between industrialization and service sector development.

Promoting the coordinated development of industrialization and the environment is a goal pursued by all of the countries of the world. Strengthening environmental regulation (ER) and improving green total factor productivity (GTFP) are important means to achieving this goal. However, the relationship between ER and GTFP has been debated in the academic circles, which reflects the complexity of this issue. This paper empirically tested the relationship between ER and GTFP in China by using panel data and a systematic Gaussian Mixed Model (GMM) of 177 cities at the prefecture level. The research shows that the relationship between ER and GTFP is complex, which is reflected in the differences and nonlinearity between cities with different monitoring levels and different economic development levels. (1) The relationship between ER and GTFP is linear and non-linear in different urban groups. A positive linear relationship was found in the urban group with high economic development level, while a U-shaped nonlinear relationship was found in other urban groups. (2) There are differences in the inflection point value and the variable mean of ER in different urban groups, which have different promoting effects on GTFP. In key monitoring cities and low economic development level cities, the mean value of ER had not passed the inflection point, and ER was negatively correlated with GTFP. The mean values of ER variables in the whole sample, the non-key monitoring and the middle economic development level cities had all passed the inflection point, which gradually promoted the improvement of GTFP. (3) Among the control variables of the different city groups, science and technology input and the financial development level mainly had positive effects on GTFP, while foreign direct investment (FDI) and fixed asset investment variables mainly had negative effects.

This study provides the theoretical framework and empirical model for productivity growth evaluations in agricultural sector as one of the most important sectors in Iran’s economic development plan. We use the Solow residual model to measure the productivity growth share in the value-added growth of the agricultural sector. Our time series data includes value-added per worker, employment, and capital in this sector. The results show that the average total factor productivity growth rate in the agricultural sector is -0.72% during 1991-2010. Also, during this period, the share of total factor productivity growth in the value-added growth is -19.6%, while it has been forecasted to be 33.8% in the fourth development plan. Considering the effective role of capital in the agricultural low productivity, we suggest applying productivity management plans (especially in regards of capital productivity) to achieve future growth goals.

Low-carbon city construction (LCC) is an important strategy for countries desiring to improve environmental quality, realize cleaner production, and achieve sustainable development. Low-carbon cities have attracted widespread attention for their attempts to coordinate the relationship between environmental protection and economic development. Using the panel data from 2006 to 2017 of prefecture-level cities in China, this study applied the difference-in-differences (DID) method to analyze the effects of LCC on the total factor productivity (TFP) of the cities and its possible transmission mechanism. The results show significantly positive effects on TFP, but the effects on each component of TFP are different. Although the LCC has promoted technical progress and scale efficiency, it has inhibited technical efficiency. The accuracy of the results has been confirmed by several robustness tests. Mechanism analysis showed that the pilot policy of low-carbon cities has promoted technical progress and scale efficiency by technological innovation and the upgrading of industrial structure, but resource mismatches among enterprises have been the main reason for reduced technical efficiency. Regional heterogeneity analysis showed that the effects on TFP in the eastern region have been more significant than in the central and western regions. In the eastern region, they have promoted technical progress, while in the central and western regions, they have promoted technical progress and scale efficiency but hindered technical efficiency. This paper presents our findings for the effects of LCC on economic development and provides insightful policy implications for the improvement of technical efficiency in low-carbon cities.

The British Industrial Revolution is reviewed in the light of recent developments in modeling economic growth. It is argued that ”endogenous innovation” models may be useful in this context particularly for understanding why total factor productivity growth rose only slowly. ”Macroinventions” were central to economic development in this period, however, and these are best seen as exogenous technological shocks. Although new growth theorists would easily identify higher growth potential in eighteenth-century Britain than in France, explaining the timing of the acceleration in growth remains elusive. A research agenda to develop further insights from new growth ideas is proposed.

The role of the service sector in the development of the national economy of the country is substantiated. It is proved that the artificial cultivation of the service sector in the conditions of degradation of the branch structure and the reduction of effective aggregate demand can not bring it into the rank of the engine of economic development. Methodologically substantiated the author's position regarding the synergy of the level of household income, the structure of their expenditures, the investment attractiveness of the country and the productivity of its economy. The direct-to-person segment of the service sector is also characterized by technological and technological innovation, which is reflected in the deepening of personalization of the provision of catering services.

Abstract This paper introduces new estimates of recent productivity developments in the United States, using an appropriate theoretical framework for aggregating industry multi-factor productivity (MFP) to sectors and the total economy. Our work sheds light on the sources of the continued strong performance of US productivity since 2000.We find that the major sectoral players in the late 1990s pickup were not contributors to the more recent surge in productivity. Rather, striking gains in MFP in the finance and business service sector, a resurgence in MFP growth in the industrial sector, and an end to drops elsewhere more than account for the aggregate acceleration in productivity in recent years. Further, some evidence is found for a link between IT intensity and the recent productivity acceleration.

Purpose – The Ethiopian economy is characterized by erratic and poor performance with negative growth rates, seven times over the period 1981-2010. This trapped per capita income at 358 USD in 2010 staying far away from middle-income country status. A lot of unsolved debates regarding perpetual growth, structural change and sectoral allocation of resource emerged overtime. The purpose of this paper is to examine the alternative effects of induced sectoral total factor productivity and makes comparisons of various sectoral growth options. Design/methodology/approach – This study uses a recursive dynamic computable general equilibrium model based on neoclassical-structuralist thought. It also calibrates coefficients that capture the impacts of openness, imported capital and liberalization on sectoral total factor productivity growth using a model of vector auto-regressive with exogenous variables. Findings – Future economic growth rate is expected to grow at a declining trend and to be dominated by the service sector. If it keeps growing on the current path it will expose the economy to a severe structural change burden problem. Openness induced agricultural total factor productivity highly improves the welfare of households while imported capital goods induced industrial total factor productivity is also better in fostering structural change of the economy. The broad-based growth option that combines the induced total factor productivity of all sectors also enables the economy to achieve more sustainable growth, rapid structural change and welfare gain at the same time. Originality/value – There are intensive and charged debates regarding alternative sectoral growth options. However, the debate does not derive from a rigorous analysis and holistic economy-wide approach. It is rather affiliated with politics. Therefore, the paper is original and investigates these issues meticulously.

Abstract In recent years, China's economy has experienced a rapid transformation period from rugged economic development to a sustainable economic development style. Increasing green total factor productivity (GTFP) is considered as one of the important signs. The application of innovation capability (ICY) is becoming more and more widely used in modern life. But it is still unclear how ICY can affect GTFP. With increasingly stricter environmental laws and regulations, how environmental regulations (ER) affect GTFP is unclear. This research contributes to the literature on the impact mechanisms of ICY and ER on GTFP using the data on 30 Chinese provinces covering the period from 2006-2017. The results indicate both ICY and ER can effectively promote GTFP. Compared with ER, ICY has obvious heterogeneity on GTFP, that is, the stronger the ICY is, the stronger it promoting effect on GTFP. Next, ICY plays an intermediary role in ER and GTFP, and ER can promote GTFP through ICY. Accordingly, the paper puts forward some policy suggestions, such as optimizing and improving ER policy, unswervingly practicing innovation-driven development strategy, strengthening monitoring and supervision.
