This study was designed to examine the chemical composition of the essential oil and the in vitro antibacterial activities of the essential oil and methanol extract of Teucrium montanum. The inhibitory effects of the essential oil and the methanol extracts of Teucrium montanum were tested against thirteen bacterial species using the disc-diffusion method. GC/MS analyses revealed that the essential oil contained mainly sesquiterpenes, such as ?-cadinene (17.19 %), ?-selinene (8.16 %) and ?-calacorene (4.97 %). The highest activities were obtained with the essential oil of Teucrium montanum against K. pneumoniae, B. subtilis, B. mycoides, E. cloaceae and A. chlorococcum. In addition, comparison of the antibacterial activities of the essential oil and the methanol extract showed that the essential oil exhibited the stronger antibacterial activities.

This study was designed to examine the chemical composition of essential oil and thein vitroantimicrobial activities of essential oil and methanol extract ofTeucrium montanum. The inhibitory effects of essential oil and methanol extracts ofT. montanumwere tested against 13 bacterial and three fungal species by using disc-diffusion method. GC/MS analyses revealed that essential oil contains mainly δ-cadinene (17.19%), β-selinene (8.16%) α-calacorene (4.97%), 1,6-dimethyl-4-(1-methylethyl)-naphthalene (4.91%), caryophyllene (4.35%), copaene (4.23%), torreyol (3.91%), 4-terpineol (3.90%), cadina-1,4-diene (3.39%), β-sesquiphellandrene (3.34%), τ-cadinol (3.12%) and γ-curcumene (3.18%). The essential oil has antibacterial as well as antifungal effect.

Abstract. Benachour H, Ramdani M, Lograda T, Chalard P, Figueredo J. 2020. Chemical composition and antibacterial activities of Capparis spinosa essential oils from Algeria. Biodiversitas 21: 161-169. The essential oils of Capparis spinosa L. collected from six locations in Algeria were obtained by hydro-distillation. The chemical composition of oils was performed by GC-MS. The disc diffusion method is applied for the antibacterial activity. The extraction produced low yield (0.03%). The result of chromatographic analysis (GC/MS) leads to the identification of 33 components; palmitic acid (38.19%), nonanal-n (12.61%), cymene-2,5-dimethoxy-para (8.94%) and octacosane (5.49%) were the major components of these oils. The result of cluster analysis based on essential oils constituents showed the presence of three chemotypes,i.e., the chemotype of Nonanal-n-Cymen 2,5 dimethoxy para-Dodecanal, the chemotype of Nonanal-n-Hexadecanoic acid-tetracosane and the chemotype Tetracosane-n-pentyl furane-2-octacosane. In-vitro antimicrobial activity of caper oils against nine bacterial species showed that the oils have no activity against E. coli and have modest activities against eight other bacterial species tested; however, the desirability test shows that the oils used were not effective on the bacteria tested.

The chemical composition of the essential oil of Saccocalyx satureioides Coss. et Dur. (Lamiaceae) was analyzed by chiral and achiral GC/MS and 42 components were identified. The main constituents were (+)-α-terpineol (35.9%), thymol (15.6%) and borneol (12.4%). The in vitro antibacterial and antifungal activities of the essential oil were assessed by the disc diffusion method, and were significant on the six microorganisms tested. A moderate inhibitory activity against hepatitis C virus polymerase was also evidenced.

The essential oil of the aerial parts of Anvillea radiata Coss. & Dur. was examined by GC-MS. Twenty-nine constituents were identified, representing 88.8% of the total. 6-Oxocyclonerolidol (66.6%) and 6-hydroxycyclonerolidol (11.4%) were found to be the major components. The disc diffusion method, used for antimicrobial activity testing, showed that the essential oil had a significant antibacterial activity against all tested microorganisms.

The chemical composition of the volatile compounds from the leaves of Lantana canescens Kunth (Verbenaceae) and L. lopez-palacii Moldenke grown in Colombia were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. One hundred and thirty-nine volatile compounds were identified in L. canescens, of which the major ones were β-caryophyllene (13.5%), germacrene D (10.3%) and 1-octen-3-ol (8.4%). In the oil obtained from L. lopez-palacii, eighty-three compounds were identified, of which the most prominent were 1-octen-3-ol (24.4%) and β-caryophyllene (15.2%). The in vitro antibacterial activity of the L. lopez-palacii essential oil was studied against three bacterial strains using the disc diffusion method. No antimicrobial activity was found against Escherichia coli, Enterobacter sakazakii and Listeria monocytogenes.

 2',4',5'- and 2',3',4'-trimethoxy flavanones have been synthesized starting with 2-hydroxyacetophone and substituted aldehyde. Antibacterial activities of the flavanones have been tested along with their corresponding chalcones against two human pathogenic bacteria (Streptococcus-b-haemolyticus and  Klebsiella sp. (G-)). Antifungal activities of the flavanones have also been investigated against  two plants pathogenic mold fungi (Rhizactonia solani Sclerotium rolfsii). The structures of the synthesized compounds have been characterized with the help of  UV, IR and 1H NMR and 13C-NMR spectra. The antibacterial and antifungal screening were performed in vitro by the filter paper disc diffusion method and poisoned food technique. The flavanones showed antibacterial activity while no activity was observed to their corresponding chalcones against the tested bacteria. On the other hand, chalcones and their corresponding flavanones both showed fungicidal activities.

The derivatives of cinnamic acid and N-arylpiperazine show antibacterial activity. In this work the potential synergistic effect of cinnamyl derivatives of arylpiperazine in selected bacteria was investigated. The antibacterial activities of the derivatives were evaluated against Gram-positive bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus, Streptosporangium longisporum, Sarcina lutea, Micrococcus flavus, Clostridium sporogenes and Bacillus subtilis and Gram-negative bacteria: Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella enteritidis and Proteus vulgaris by the disc diffusion method. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against the selected bacteria was determined for all compounds that showed activity in the disc diffusion method. The majority of the investigated compounds displayed in vitro antibacterial activity. The effect of the type and structure of the substituent on the aromatic ring on the antibacterial activity is discussed. It was found that two derivatives expressed activity toward S. longisporum and P. aeruginosa that was almost as strong as that of amikacin.

Abstract The components of the essential oils (EOs) obtained by solvent-free microwave extraction (SFME) and hydrodistillation (HD) from endemic Origanum saccatum P.H. Davis were identified by using GC/MS. The main constituents of both EOs obtained by SFME and HD, respectively, from O. saccatum were p-cymene (72.5 and 70.6%), thymol (9.32 and 8.11%), and carvacrol (7.18 and 6.36%). The EO obtained by SFME contained substantially higher amounts of oxygenated compounds and lower amounts of monoterpenes than did the EO obtained by HD. The antibacterial activities of the EOs obtained by SFME and HD were evaluated with the disc diffusion method by comparison with 10 different bacterial strains. The antibacterial activity of the EO extracted by SFME was found to be more effective than that of the EO extracted by HD against seven of the tested bacteria.

The essential oil was obtained from the white Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) grown in Heilongjiang by hydrodistillation in a clevenger apparatus with 0.28% yield. Then the chemical composition of the essential oil was analyzed by GC-MS. A total of 25 constituents were detected, 24 compounds representing for 98.99% were identified, of which the most abundant compound was β-linalool (64.421%). The antibacterial activities of oil were tested against 3 different general of bacteria and were compared with that of the Penicillin sodium, using the filter paper disc agar diffusion method. The result showed that the oil has powerful inhibitory effects against Staphylicoccus albus, followed by Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli.

Abstract. Ounoughi A, Ramdani M, Lograda  T, Chalard P, Figueredo G. 2020. Chemotypes and antibacterial activities of Inula viscosa essential oils from Algeria. Biodiversitas 21: 1504-1517. The aim of this work is to investigate the chemical composition and the antibacterial activities of the essential oils from Inula viscosa (L.) Aiton. Samples were collected in the flowering stage, from different localities in Algeria. The aerial parts of I. viscosa were submitted to a hydro distillation. The chemical composition of the essential oil was analyzed by GC and GC/MS. The antibacterial activity of the essential oils was evaluated using the disc diffusion method against fifteen bacterial species. Fifty-eight compounds representing 98.93 ± 2.03% of the total oil was identified in I. viscosa. It was found that the chemical composition was dominated by the presence of the following major products: polygodial (19.8 ± 16.97%), phytol (12.3 ± 9.77%), fokienol (6.01 ± 3.43%), intermedeol neo (5.09 ± 2.38%), caryophyllene oxide (4.91 ± 3.03%), nerolidol-Z (4.46 ± 5.46%), nerolidol-E (4.24 ± 8.07%) and α-ionone iso methyl-E (3.72 ± 2.26%). The essential oil of I. viscosa has moderate activity against the bacteria tested. In contrast, the Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonon syringae ATCC 53543 and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 49452 strains are resistant to I. viscosa essential oils. The phytochemical study of I. viscosa showed that it is rich in terpene compounds, with polygodial and phytol as major components. Three distinct chemotypes are highlighted. The (Polygodial-Intermedeol-neo-Phytol) chemotype of Salah Bey population and two chemotypes with Fokinol-polygodial and Fokinol-phytol. Moderate antibacterial activities of essential oils against the bacteria tested were found.
