Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) emulation is poised to become unsurpassed design tool for development, testing, and optimization of real-time control algorithms for grid connected power electronics converters for distributed generation, active filters and smart grid applications. It is strongly important to examine and test how grid connected converters perform under different operating conditions including grid disturbances and faults. In that sense, converter?s controller is a key component responsible for ensuring safe and high-performance operation. This paper demonstrates an example how ultra-low latency and high fidelity HIL emulator is used to easily, rapidly and exhaustively test and validate standard control strategy for grid connected power electronics converters, without need for expensive hardware prototyping and laboratory test equipment.

In recent years, different off-the-shelf solutions for the rapid control prototyping of power electronics converters have been commercialised. The main benefits of those systems are based on a fast and easy-to-use environment due to high-level programming. However, most of those systems are very expensive and are closed software and hardware solutions. In this context, this paper presents the design and implementation of a control platform targeting at the segment in between expensive off-the-shelf control platforms and low-cost controllers. The control platform is based on the Launchpad TMS320F28379D from Texas Instruments, and it is equipped with an expansion board that provide analogue-to-digital measurements, switching signals and hardware protections. The performance of the control platform is experimentally tested on a 20 kVA power converter.

Taking embedded processor as the core control unit, the paper designs the fan monitoring system software and hardware to achieve the fan working condition detection and real-time control. For the control algorithm, the paper analyzes the fuzzy control system theory and composition, and then combined with tunnel ventilation particularity, introduce feed-forward model to predict the incremental acquisition of pollutants to reduce lag, combined with the system feedback value and the set value, by calculate of two independent computing fuzzy controller, and ultimately determine the number of units increase or decrease in the tunnel jet fans start and stop. Through simulation analysis, the introduction of a feed-forward signal, it can more effectively improve the capability of the system impact of interference.

This study focused on the classification of EEG signal. The study aims to make a classification with fast response and high-performance rate. Thus, it could be possible for real-time control applications as Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) systems. The feature vector is created by Wavelet transform and statistical calculations. It is trained and tested with a neural network. The db4 wavelet is used in the study. Pwelch, skewness, kurtosis, band power, median, standard deviation, min, max, energy, entropy are used to make the wavelet coefficients meaningful. The performance is achieved as 99.414% with the running time of 0.0209 seconds

A platform for the engineering design, performance, and control of an adaptive wind turbine blade is presented. This environment includes a simulation model, integrative design tool, and control framework. The authors are currently developing a novel blade with an adaptive twist angle distribution (TAD). The TAD influences the aerodynamic loads and thus, system dynamics. The modeling platform facilitates the use of an integrative design tool that establishes the TAD in relation to wind speed. The outcome of this design enables the transformation of the TAD during operation. Still, a robust control method is required to realize the benefits of the adaptive TAD. Moreover, simulation of the TAD is computationally expensive. It also requires a unique approach for both partial and full-load operation. A framework is currently being developed to relate the TAD to the wind turbine and its components. Understanding the relationship between the TAD and the dynamic system is crucial in the establishment of real-time control. This capability is necessary to improve wind capture and reduce system loads. In the current state of development, the platform is capable of maximizing wind capture during partial-load operation. However, the control tasks related to Region 3 and load mitigation are more complex. Our framework will require high-fidelity modeling and reduced-order models that support real-time control. The paper outlines the components of this framework that is being developed. The proposed platform will facilitate expansion and the use of these required modeling techniques. A case study of a 20 kW system is presented based upon the partial-load operation. The study demonstrates how the platform is used to design and control the blade. A low-dimensional aerodynamic model characterizes the blade performance. This interacts with the simulation model to predict the power production. The design tool establishes actuator locations and stiffness properties required for the blade shape to achieve a range of TAD configurations. A supervisory control model is implemented and used to demonstrate how the simulation model blade performs in the case study.

The Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO) is an orthotic device intended to assist or to restore the movements of the ankle foot complex in the case of pathological gait. Active AFO consists of sensor, controller, and actuator. The controller used in the conventional AFO to control the actuator does not use the property of synchronization of the feet. This chapter deals with development of a fuzzy-based intelligent control unit for an AFO using property of symmetry in the foot movements. The control system developed in LabVIEW provides real-time control of the defective foot by continuously monitoring the gait patterns. The input signals for the control system are generated by the sensor system having gyroscope. DC motor is used as an actuator. The data acquisition for Gait Analysis is done using National Instrument's data acquisition system DAQ6221 interfaced with a gyro-sensor.

According to the present state-of-the-art, sewerage systems, sewage treatment plants and their subsequent improvements are often planned and designed as totally separate entities, each subject to a specific set of performance objectives. As a result, sewage treatment efficiency is subject to considerable variability, depending both on general hydrologic conditions in the urban watershed (wet versus dry periods), and on specific “instantaneous” operating conditions. It has been postulated that the integration of urban drainage and wastewater treatment design and operation could allow minimization of the harmful effects of discharges from treatment plants, overflows and surface water runoff. This “ideal condition” can be achieved through the introduction of so-called “real-time control” technology in sewerage collection and treatment operations. To be a feasible goal, this technology poses the demand for more powerful simulation models of either aspect of the system - or, ideally, of a unified sewer-and-treatment plant model - than most of those currently available. This paper examines the requirements of rainfall/runoff transformation and sewer flow models with respect to real-time control applications, and focuses on the methodology of stochastic, transfer function modelling, reporting application examples. Modalities and limitations of the extraction of information from the models thus derived are also analyzed.

The diesel generator sets digital control system based on DSP is studied in this paper. The principles of voltage and speed control are analyzed. The main DSP chip is 16-bit fixed-point TMS320LF2407A. The hardware design, the former channels, the after channels and the CAN controller are accomplished in this paper. The simulation results indicate the controller has high-performance processing capabilities and it can meet the need of Generator Sets' real-time control and performance requirements.

A real-time control is proposed for plug-in-hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) based on dynamic programming (DP) and equivalent fuel consumption minimization strategy (ECMS) in this study. Firstly, the resulting controls of mode selection and series mode are stored in tables through offline simulation of DP, and the parallel HEV mode uses ECMS-based real-time algorithm to reduce the application of maps and avoid manual adjustment of parameters. Secondly, the feedback energy management system (FMES) is built based on feedback from SoC, which takes into account the charge and discharge reaction (CDR) of the battery, and in order to make full use of the energy stored in the battery, the reference SoC is introduced. Finally, a comparative simulation on the proposed real-time controller is conducted against DP, the results show that the controller has a good performance, and the fuel consumption value of the real-time controller is close to the value using DP. The engine operating conditions are concentrated in the low fuel consumption area of the engine, and when the driving distance is known, the SoC can follow the reference SoC well to make full use of the energy stored in the battery.


The intelligent approaches emerge as leading techniques in providing of stable and high performance control of industrial plants with nonlinearity, model uncertainty, variables coupling and disturbances. In the present research a novel approach for the design of a nonlinear model-free fuzzy logic controller (FLC) with two inputs – the system error and the main measurable disturbance and a rule base for disturbance compensation is suggested. It is based on off-line parameter optimisation via genetic algorithms. The approach is applied for the development of a FLC for the control of the level of ammonia brine solution in a carbonisation column with compensation of the changes in the inflow pressure. The control algorithm is implemented in a general purpose industrial programmable logic controller in ”Solvay Sodi” SA – Devnya, Bulgaria. The FLC system with disturbance compensation outperforms in an increased dynamic accuracy the FLC with the system error as a single input even when linear feedforward disturbance compensation is added. The performance of all systems is assessed from the real time control and the simulations based on a derived TSK plant model.
