Due to their rapid development, multimedia and network technologies have become a part of our lives. Information technology increases the rationality of the education process, efficiency of learning and the significance of the educator's profession; it changes the directions of the future development of pedagogy and didactics, and the educational system as a whole. This paper describes why multimedia should be implemented in higher education institutions in Serbia in the field of biochemistry, and indicates the problems that students usually encounter in learning complex, highly abstract biochemical content. Examples of contemporary educational practice in leading countries are given, together with a survey of available digital educational content (digital courses, animations, simulations and virtual laboratories) in biochemistry for the areas that are the most difficult to study.

This paper is about the challenges IT instructors face due to the rapid development of the information technology. IT instructors need to continuously update their own skills and knowledge through self-education. They also need to frequently update course syllabuses and make major changes in the course textbooks if they write them. In order to understand and evaluate these challenges, we conducted a survey among the IT instructors from several colleges and universities, particularly focusing on teaching introductory computer science courses. The focus of the survey is the need for the instructors' self-education and updating of the course syllabuses and textbooks due to the information technology rapid development. We have analyzed the results of the survey, and give recommendations for the most efficient self-education of the IT instructors.

The aim of this chapter is to (1) present a review of some innovative communication technologies in higher education and how these are implemented for organizational, marketing, and learning processes, (2) illustrate how information and communication technologies (ICTs) may drive the introduction and use of inventive activities in education. Financial cutbacks and limited government support for institutions of higher education led to (1) either a withering effect for them that made them shrink or merge in order to survive, or (2) they had to find innovative ways to survive and attract new students and audiences as potential users while making connections with the community and firms. Current trends in higher education institutions (HEIs) are associated with supplying the student with those learning methods that can lead to skills and contribute to his/her creative and individual thought. At the same time, teaching instructors need to be aware of the know-how in the communication and information technology sectors that can be further employed.

The task of kindergarten teachers is to support the development of preschool children with respect to their potential. In order to do this, they need to know every single child including their development potential, limitations, interests, needs, etc. The information about children in kindergarten is acquired by means of educational diagnostics throughout the whole day. The authors intend to present a TACR project, which involves the development of an online instrument for the purposes of educational diagnostics in kindergarten. In this way, the team of investigators respond to the current needs of educational practice, where educational diagnostics appears to be a weak part of the educational process. This may have a negative effect on the effectiveness of the education process. An integral part of the development of the online tool is practical verification in through a series of partial steps. In the paper the authors present one of the areas that will be monitored in the online application—evaluation of interpersonal relationships in the context of children’s play. The concept itself is based on educational theory and educational practice and reflects the current trends in education and the requirements of educational practice.

Recent research on collaborative learning and computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) holds an integrated and holistic perspective on learning, instruction and educational technology. Within this approach, learning activities and technological tools are seen as a merged unit, tailored to a particular context and for a particular group of participants (Crook, 2000). In line, current trends in higher education (e.g., Virtual University) set demands on developing novel educational practices that support collaborative learning in virtual environments (Häkkinen & Järvelä, in press). In this chapter, it is argued that in higher education virtual learning communities could be welcomed as a timely and innovative educational practice, with all nested complexity of relationships between individuals and collective needs, various motivations and personalized objectives (Lowyck & Pöysä, 2001; Lowyck, Pöysä, & Van Merriënboer, 2003).
