ABSTRACT This study provides descriptive evidence on target-setting policies in multi-divisional firms. Despite the importance of performance targets in practice, research mainly focuses on a few key areas in target setting, neglecting many other important aspects of target setting in organizations. Hence, relatively little is known about how performance targets are actually set, especially within multi-divisional firms. We perform in-depth interviews with managers responsible for target setting in multi-divisional firms. Using this interview information, we develop specific research questions that we examine in a survey among large U.S. and European multi-divisional firms. Broadly speaking, the survey results provide evidence that firms commit substantial time and resources to the target-setting process, indicating that they place a high strategic importance on this process. However, we also find that they are not very effective in reaching the goals of the target-setting process. Most importantly, we find a large variation in target-setting policies across firms. We exploit this variation to identify future research directions to guide examination of the diverse decisions managers encounter in the field of target setting.

Abstract Background Surgical Tray Rationalization (STR) consists of a systematic reduction in the number of surgical instruments to perform specific procedures without compromising patient safety while reducing losses in the sterilization and assembly of trays. STR is one example of initiatives to improve process performance that have been widely reported in industrial settings but only recently have gained popularity in healthcare organizations. Methods We conduct a scoping review of the literature to identify and map available evidence on surgical tray management. Five methodological stages are implemented and reported; they are: identifying research questions, identifying relevant studies, study selection, charting the data, and collating, summarizing and reporting the results. Results We reviewed forty-eight articles on STR, which were grouped according to their main proposed approaches: expert analysis, lean practices, and mathematical programming. We identify the most frequently used techniques within each approach and point to their potential contributions to operational and economic dimensions of STR. We also consolidate our findings, proposing a roadmap to STR with four generic steps (prepare, rationalize, implement, and consolidate) and recommended associated techniques. Conclusions To the best of our knowledge, ours is the first study that reviews and systematizes the existing literature on the subject of STR. Our study closes with the proposition of future research directions, which are presented as nine research questions associated with the four generic steps proposed in the STR roadmap.

This chapter first provides a brief introduction to the links between standards and standardization, innovation, and economics. This will be followed a description of the complex web of Standards Setting Organizations (SSOs) in the ICT/smart systems sector. Subsequently, a flexible tool to describe the characteristics of an SSO will be discussed. This will be followed by the description of a typical standards setting process. These three aspects are only parts of the fairly complex task of standardization management, which will be described next. The subsequent section will briefly cover national standardization strategies. Finally, some likely future research directions are sketched.

Peer-to-peer insurance platforms (P2P insurance), in Poland often called “social platform insurance”, are entering the European insurance market. Although this is not the case for the Polish insurance sector yet, the concept keeps evolving rapidly. P2P insurance is often considered an alternative to the traditional form of insurance. As yet, no legally relevant definition of P2P insurance has been created, and no insurance regulation refers to such platforms. This paper seeks to provide an overview of the existing research both in Polish and foreign literature, to analyze various contributions, highlight current research deficits and future research directions. Finally, the paper attempts to address key research questions which have been already raised in respect of P2P insurance, particularly in the context of the Polish insurance regulations.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to highlight the relevance of conducting brand management research in a family firm context and to identify future research directions by reviewing and structuring the existing literature. Design/methodology/approach The potential consequences of being a family firm on internal organizational processes and stakeholders’ external perception are depicted. Afterwards the literature considering brand management research in family firms is reviewed systematically (n=41) and structured by applying the Organizational Viewpoint Framework. Relevant research questions are derived based on the findings and their practical relevance is tested. Findings The contributions are threefold. First, depicting the effects of being a family firm on the organization and its stakeholders highlights the relevance of conducting brand management research in family firms. Second, structuring the literature regarding the effects of being a family firm on organizational identity, intended brand image, construed brand image, and reputation helps derive research questions of theoretical and practical relevance that will serve the field as a guide for future research directions. Third, by extending the Organizational Viewpoint Framework originating from brand management research with the element of being a family firm, a further attempt at bridging both research fields is undertaken. Originality/value This paper represents an important next step in the development of this research field by highlighting the importance of conducting brand management research in a family firm context and by structuring existent research to depict future research opportunities with theoretical and practical relevance.

Purpose This paper aims to study the main trends of scientific research in Islamic finance’s social aspects to clarify place, role and functions, especially in the context of increasing social problems. To achieve this goal, this paper focuses on the social component of Islamic finance, analyzes publications on social Islamic finance in the Web of Science database, covering the period from 1979 to 2020, specify the geographical localization of research networks, determines the most cited authors and their scientific position. Design/methodology/approach The authors have applied several literature review techniques, a bibliometric citation and co-citation analysis, a co-authorship analysis and a review of the most cited papers. The analyzes’ results allow us to offer five future questions in Islamic social finance, zakat and waqf, which have not been investigated before and could influence Islamic social finance and Islamic finance research. Findings The authors also derive and summarize five leading future research questions. Research limitations/implications This is a limitation of using only the Web of Science Core Collection database as the premier resource and the most trusted citation index for the world’s scientific and scholarly research. Further study might expand the types of analyzed units, include more keywords and include other databases, such as Scopus. Originality/value This paper can be considered as an inspirational one to future researchers and policymakers in Islamic social finance.

Chapter 11 answers the three research questions and summarizes the book’s findings in terms of the timing, magnitude, and persistence of women’s cabinet inclusion. It outlines the process for initiating, confirming, and sustaining “concrete floors” for women’s cabinet inclusion across each of the country cases. Concrete floors are the minimum number or proportion of women in cabinet for that ministerial team to be perceived as legitimate. The concept captures the process by which cabinets have been re-gendered to include ever greater numbers of women. The concrete floor helps to explain why presidents and prime ministers have not reverted to appointing all male-cabinets and, in most cases, have refrained from appointing fewer women to cabinet than their predecessors. The concrete floor also provides a strategic foothold for feminist activists who want to increase women’s presence in national politics, specifically in cabinets and shadow cabinets. The chapter concludes by identifying future research directions and the practical implications of the book’s findings.

A customer-perceived quality service has been widely used towards enhancing the customers’ satisfaction and loyalty. The same situation is also applicable for the online services; in an increased use of websites as a channel for information presentation and provision of other services. Hence, the website service quality perceptions of users need to be understood so as to be managed more effectively. The key dimension of this study is to identify the website service quality through the qualitative and quantitative approaches. The website quality theories, focus groups and survey results generate numerous dimensions and items for the understanding and measuring the website service quality of various public-listed companies in Malaysia, particularly from the users’ viewpoint. The laboratory-based method obtains data from the external users’ websites whereas mail surveys aims to gather the views from the organizations’ website. These two approaches use to obtain the perceptual data for further quantitative analysis. Based on the Reliability and Factor Analysis as well as Structural Equation Modeling, there are six valid and reliable dimensions of website service quality identified, namely: Assurance, Tangibles, Content Quality, Technical Quality, Organisation Information, and Address. The implications and future research directions will be also discussed in the following sections of this study.

Over the past two decades, Machine Learning (ML) techniques have been increasingly utilized for the purpose of predicting outcomes in sport. In this paper, we provide a review of studies that have used ML for predicting results in team sport, covering studies from 1996 to 2019. We sought to answer five key research questions while extensively surveying papers in this field. This paper offers insights into which ML algorithms have tended to be used in this field, as well as those that are beginning to emerge with successful outcomes. Our research highlights defining characteristics of successful studies and identifies robust strategies for evaluating accuracy results in this application domain. Our study considers accuracies that have been achieved across different sports and explores the notion that outcomes of some team sports could be inherently more difficult to predict than others. Finally, our study uncovers common themes of future research directions across all surveyed papers, looking for gaps and opportunities, while proposing recommendations for future researchers in this domain.
