ABSTRACT Objective: To test the null hypothesis that there is no difference between the effects of fan-type rapid (FRME) and rapid maxillary expansion (RME) used with an acrylic bonded expansion appliance on dentofacial structures in early occlusal stages. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective clinical trial. The FRME group had an anterior constricted maxillary width with a normal intermolar width, and the RME group had bilateral constricted maxillary width. The FRME group consisted of 20 patients (mean age, 8.96 ± 1.19 years), and the RME group consisted of 22 patients (mean age, 8.69 ± 0.66 years). Lateral and frontal cephalometric radiographs and dental casts were taken before and after expansion and 3 months after completing treatment for each patient. The data were compared using repeated-measures analysis of variance. The paired-samples t-test was used to evaluate treatment and retention effects, and the independent samples t-test was used to consider the differences between the two groups. Results: The maxilla moved downward and forward in both groups. The nasal cavity and maxillary width were expanded more in the RME group, and there were only a few relapses in this group during the retention period. There was significant labial tipping of the upper incisors in the FRME expansion group. The expansion of intercanine width was similar in both groups, but the expansion of intermolar width was significantly greater in the RME group. Conclusion: The null hypothesis was rejected. There was a difference between the effects of FRME and RME used with an acrylic bonded expansion appliance on dentofacial structures in the early occlusal stages.

Abstrak: Dalam menyiapkan pasien yang akan dioperasi, maka perawat dituntut mampu menyiapkan pasien untuk siap menjalani tindakan pembedahan. Sehingga komunikasi terapeutik dapat diterapkan oleh perawat untuk mengurangi kecemasannya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh komunikasi terapeutik terhadap penurunan tingkat kecemasan pasien pre-operatif di IBS BLU RSUP Prof.Dr.R.D.Kandou Manado. Desain dalam penelitian ini adalah pra-eksperiment one group pretest-posttest design. Sampel adalah pasien yang akan menjalani operasi di IBS BLU RSUP Prof.Dr.R.D.Kandou Manado yang mempunyai kecemasan. Variabel independen adalah komunikasi terapeutik dan variabel dependen adalah tingkat kecemasan pasien pre-operatif. Analisa data menggunakan uji-T sampel berpasangan pada tingkat kemaknaan 95% (α ≤0,05) dengan bantuan program SPSS versi 20. Hasil analisa didapatkan nilai p=0,000, artinya p <α. Hal ini berarti hipotesis nol (H0) ditolak. Dengan kata lain terdapat perbedaan tingkat kecemasan sebelum dan sesudah dilakukan komunikasi terapeutik pada pasien pre-operatif di IBS BLU RSUP Prof.Dr.R.D.Kandou Manado. Kata kunci: kecemasan, komunikasi terapeutik, pasien pre-operatif.     Abstract: In preparing the patient to be operated, the nurses are able to prepare patients to readily undergo surgery. So that therapeutic communication can be applied by nurses to reduce anxiety. This study aimed to determine the effect of therapeutic communication to the decline in the level of patient pre-operative anxiety in IBS BLU Dr Prof.Dr.RDKandou Manado. The design in this study were pre-experimental one group pretest-posttest design. Samples are patients who will undergo surgery in the department of Prof.Dr.RDKandou Manado BLU IBS who have anxiety. The independent variable was therapeutic communication and the dependent variable is the level of pre-operative patient anxiety. Analysis of data using paired samples T-test at 95% significance level (α ≤ 0.05) with SPSS version 20. Analysis results obtained p=0.000, meaning that p <α. This means that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. In other words, there are different levels of anxiety before and after therapeutic communication in pre-operative patients in the IBS BLU Dr Prof.Dr.RD. Kandou Manado. Background: In Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) temporo-mandibular joints are often affected causing skeletal and dental malocclusions. The most frequent condition is mandibular hypoplasia, that may be associated with maxillary hypoplasia. The aim of this retrospective case control study is to investigate the effects and the safety of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in growing patients affected by JIA. It was evaluated whether RME could be performed without complications on TMJs of JIA patients using DC/TMD protocol, and naso-maxillary transversal parameters were compared with the ones obtained on healthy patients. Methods: Twenty-five patients affected by JIA that ceased to manifest TMJ (Temporo-Mandibular Joint) symptoms in the previous year were treated with RME to solve the maxillary transverse hypoplasia. Postero-anterior cephalometric tracings were collected before and after treatment; linear measurements were obtained to study maxillary and nasal cavity modifications. Data were compared to those of a similar group of twenty-five healthy patients. Paired t-test and Independent t-test were used to evaluate changes before and after treatment in each group and to perform a comparison between the groups. Results: All patients demonstrated a statistically significant increase in nasal cavity width, maxillary width and upper and lower intermolar width. No patients presented a worsening of their TMJs condition. Intragroup comparisons revealed significant changes of cephalometric measurements, but no difference was found when comparing JIA and healthy patients. Conclusions: Growing patients with JIA that ceased to show signs of active TMJ involvement for at least one year could be safely treated with RME, expecting similar benefits to those of healthy patients. Dentists and rheumatologists should be informed of safety and potential benefits of palatal expansion in JIA patients in order to improve the outcome of orthodontic treatment and reduce the indication for more invasive procedures (i.e., Surgical Assisted Rapid Maxillary Expansion).

ABSTRACT Objective:  To compare volumetric root resorption after rapid maxillary expansion (RME) between tooth-borne and tissue-borne appliances using CBCT. Repair in resorption cavities after 6 months of fixed retention was also compared. Materials and Methods:  A sample of 33 subjects were randomly divided into two groups: Hyrax (n  = 16) and Haas (n = 17). CBCT scans were taken 6 months before expansion, immediately after expansion, and 6 months after fixed retention. Mimics Innovation V 16.0 software was used for segmentation and volumetric measurement of 198 teeth. Bland-Altman plots, independent samples t test, repeated measures analysis of variance, and the Friedman test were used for statistical analysis. Results:  Differences in root resorption after RME and repair after retention were not significant between the hyrax and Haas appliances or between male and female. Significant differences were found between preexpansion and postexpansion root volumes in the first premolars and molars—even in unattached second premolars. When the percentage of root volume loss is considered, no significant difference was found between the first premolar, second premolar, and first molar. Volumetric changes after 6 months of retention were not statistically significant. Conclusions:  More resorption was observed in the Hyrax expander group. But it was not statistically significant. Repair was observed after 6 months of retention. Heavy RME forces affected premolars and molar similarly.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to estimate the changes in the palate area after rapid maxillary expansion (RME) with the Hyrax expander in growing subjects, using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: Fourteen patients (9 girls and 5 boys; mean age = 11.7 ± 2.4 years) who required RME as part of their orthodontic treatment were included in this study. CBCT records had been taken before RME treatment (T0), at the end of active expansion (T1) and after a 6-month retention period (T2). The CBCT scans were manipulated with Dolphin Imaging® version 11.7 Premium software, in which landmarks were positioned and measured in relation to sagittal, coronal and axial planes, to verify the palate surface area. In addition, linear measurements of the palatal depth and width were assessed. These measurements were compared by using analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures. A p-value smaller than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The palatal surface area and width significantly increased from T0 to T1, respectively by 9.27% and 9.71%, and both decreased in a non-significant manner from T1 to T2. The palatal depth had non-significant differences at T0, T1 and T2. Conclusions: RME promotes a significant gain in the surface area of the palate and an increase in intermolar width. The Hyrax appliance was effective for the treatment of maxillary atresia in growing patients. There was no vertical alteration of the palate. After a 6-month retention period, the maxilla transverse dimension and the surface area of the palate remained stable.

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengembangkan model assessment as learning (model-AaL) untuk meningkatkan kompetensi siswa pada pembelajaran akuntansi di SMK. Pengembangan model asesmen ini mengadaptasi model pengembangan Hopkin & Clark, yang terdiri atas dua tahap, yaitu: (1) tahap penelitian, dan (2) tahap pengembangan. Tahap penelitian meliputi: penelitian pendahuluan, studi hasil penelitian, analisis komponen model, penyusunan prototipe model. Tahap pengembangan meliputi: validasi model oleh pakar dan praktisi, melatih guru menggunakan model, uji coba model terbatas dan diperluas disertai evaluasi. Subjek penelitian adalah guru akuntansi dan siswa kelas X kompetensi keahlian akuntansi SMK. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan wawancara, kuesioner, pengamatan, dan tes. Teknik analisis data menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan teknik analisis deskriptif dan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan teknik analisis perkembangan (repeated measures analysis) dan paired samples t-test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, bahwa: (1) ada enam komponen yang harus ada pada Model-AaL untuk meningkatkan kompetensi akuntansi siswa pada pembelajaran akuntansi di SMK, yaitu: tujuan, tugas terstruktur, asesmen diri, asesmen teman sejawat, pengamatan aktivitas siswa, dan umpan balik; dan (2) model-AaL efektif dapat meningkatkan kompetensi akuntansi siswa pada pembelajaran akuntansi di SMK, dengan nilai p (Sig) < α (0,05). Kata kunci: model-AaL, kompetensi siswa, dan pembelajaran akuntansi  DEVELOPING A MODEL OF “ASSESSMENT AS LEARNING OF ACCOUNTING LEARNING” AT VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOLS Abstract The objective of this study is to develop model of assessment as learning (model-AaL) to improve the students’ competencies in the Accounting learning at Vocational High Schools. It adapted the model claimed by Hopkin & Clark, consisting of two phases, namely: (1) research and (2) development. The former included preliminary research, study of the research results, analysis of the model components, and the arrangement of model prototype. The latter, comprised model validation by experts and practitioners, teacher training for using the model, limited and extended model experimentations accompanied with evaluation. The subjects of the research were the Accounting teachers and the students in Grade X of the Accounting Expertise Program of Vocational High Schools. The data of the research were gathered through in-depth interview, questionnaire, observation, and test. They were then analyzed by using the qualitative approach with the descriptive analysis technique and the quantitative approach with the analysis techniques of repeated measures analysis and paired samples t-test. The results of the research show that: (1) the model-AaL consists of six components, namely: objective, structured task, self-assessment, peer assessment, observation on student’s activities, and feedback; and (2) the model-AaL can effectively improve the students’ competencies in Accounting learning at Vocational High Schools, with a value of p (Sig) < α (0.05). (1) Background: To investigate condylar position in subjects with functional posterior crossbite comparing findings before and after rapid maxillary expansion (RME) treatment through 3D analysis; (2) Methods: Thirty-two Caucasian patients (14 males, mean age 8 y 8 m ± 1 y 2 m; 18 females mean age 8 y 2 m ± 1 y 4 m) with functional posterior crossbite (FPXB) diagnosis underwent rapid palatal expansion with a Haas appliance banded on second deciduous upper molars. Patients’ underwent CBCT scans before rapid palatal expansion (T0) and after 12 months (T1). The images were processed through 3D slicer software; (3) Results: The condylar position changes between T1 and T0 among the crossbite and non-crossbite sides were not statistically significant, except for the transversal axis. At T1, the condyles moved forward (y axis) and laterally (x axis), they also moved downward (z axis) but not significantly; (4) Conclusions: Condilar position in growing patients with functional posterior crossbite did not change significantly after rapid maxillary expansion.

AbstractWide dynamic range compression (WDRC) has been widely used in hearing aid technology. However, several reports indicate that WDRC may improve audibility at the expense of speech intelligibility. As such, a modified amplification compression scheme, named adaptive compression, was developed. However, the effect of compression strategies on speech perception in pediatric hearing aid users has not been clearly reported.The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of adaptive compression and fast-acting WDRC processing strategies on sentence recognition in noise with Mandarin, pediatric hearing aid users.This study was set up using a double-blind, within-subject, repeated-measures design.Twenty-six children who spoke Mandarin Chinese as their primary language and had bilateral sensorineural hearing loss participated in the study.Sentence recognition in noise was evaluated in behind-the-ear technology with both adaptive compression processing and fast-acting WDRC processing and was selected randomly for each child. Percent correct sentence recognition in noise with fast-acting WDRC and adaptive compression was collected from each participant. Correlation analysis was performed to examine the effect of gender, age at assessment, and hearing threshold of the better ear on signal-to-noise ratio, and a paired-samples t test was employed to compare the performance of the adaptive compression strategy and fast-acting WDRC processing.The mean percentage correct of sentence recognition in noise with behind-the-ear technology with fast-acting WDRC and adaptive compression processing were 62.24% and 68.71%, respectively. The paired-samples t test showed that the performance of the adaptive compression strategy was significantly better than the fast-acting WDRC processing (t = 3.190, p = 0.004).Compared with the fast-acting WDRC, adaptive compression provided better sentence recognition in noise for Mandarin pediatric hearing aid users.

The effect of transport on serum amyloid A (SAA), haptoglobin (Hp), Fibrinogen and white blood cells (WBC) was evaluated in 10 ewes and 10 beef cattle. All animals were transported by road for 6 h over a distance of about 490 km with an average speed of 80 km/h. Blood samples, collected via jugular venepuncture, were obtained before and after transport as well as after 12, 24 and 48 h rest time. One-way repeated measures analysis of variance showed a statistically significant effect of sampling time on SAA, Hp, and WBC in ewes and beef cattle. Based on these results, Hp and SAA levels, together with WBC, may be useful indicators of animal health and welfare and in predicting the risk assessment in meat inspection.

Reasoning skills are very important in encouraging students to think more critically and logically, as depicted in the Malaysian Education Development Plan (2013-2025). Therefore, this study looked into improving the Differentiation Reasoning Level (DRL) of reasoning skills among students for a topic in the Additional Mathematics subject,  known as Differentiation, through reasoning learning strategy. The study participants consisted of a total of 31 students from a secondary boarding school in Johor, selected through a purposive sampling method. A pre-test was carried out for the participants, from the advanced level, followed by a number of repetition tests, before the post-test assessment was conducted. The data collection for this study employed a set of Reasoning Test on Differentiation (RTD) and 10 sets of learning activities on Differentiation based on modified Marzano Rubric for Specific Task of Situations (1992). This dimension involved four types of reasoning skills, namely,  comparison, classification, inductive, and deductive. The survey data, through paired samples t-test, revealed a significant difference between the mean scores in pre-test and post-test (p <0.05). In addition, the paired sample t-test showed a significant difference on the level of reasoning among students from each construct in the reasoning skills before and after using this module. In conclusion, the Marzano Model of Dimensional Learning (1992) is a thinking skill model that can help improve students' reasoning skills. The model covers analysis aspects of what has been learned by implementing the process of identifying reasons, which will help students to add and expand their knowledge. The findings also implied that, the processes of teaching and learning play an important role in ensuring students’ capability to emphasize on the implementation process of reasoning skills

Abstract Introduction The rapid maxillary expansion (RME) reduces the risk of developing structural and functional disorders in the stomatognathic system. Objective To examine the effects of the RME as a treatment for the posterior crossbite, related with the electromyographic activity of the masticatory muscles and the TMJ noises in a population of children. Material and method 13 girls and 7 boys, regardless of the type of malocclusion, with a mean age of 9 years old (± 3), were treated with RME. The electrovibratography analyzed the TMJ noise, and the electromyography analyzed the masticatory muscles before treatment (T0) and after three months of a short-term follow-up (T1). The comparisons of the affected and unaffected sides by the crossbite were performed using Mann-Whitney’s test, and to compare data before and after treatment the Wilcoxon’s test was used (level of significance: 5%). Result No significant differences were found in the parameters of joint noise in comparison to the sides affected and unaffected by the crossbite, in both T0 and T1 (p>0.05); only the side without the crossbite observed decrease in the peak amplitude of the joint noises after treatment. In the static electromyographic analysis, inter-side differences were observed before and after treatment, since the deliberate unilateral chewing showed greater asymmetry activity in T0 for both sides, which has been corrected after treatment, improving the functional chewing. Conclusion The proposed treatment did not lead to the occurrence of joint noises and improved the functional pattern of electromyographic activity during chewing at the end of treatment.
