Abstract The spring characteristics of a radial tire loaded on a crossbar put on a roadway was analyzed with a spring bedded ring model. Nonlinear radial and tangential spring effects of the sidewall and large deformation of the tread were considered. The tread curvature in the cross section was found to be the most important structural factor for elucidating the enveloping properties of a radial tire in contact with a crossbar. Experimental verifications of the spring effect and the tread deformation of a radial tire were in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

The recent analysis by Acrivos & Lo (1978) concerning the breakup of a long slender droplet in an axisymmetric straining motion is extended to the case of a two-dimensional hyperbolic flow. It is found that, although the cross-section of the droplet becomes significantly non-circular, the theoretical criterion for breakup is effectively the same as in the axisymmetric case. The theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the available experimental results.

Abstract The contact deformation of a radial tire with a camber angle, has been an important problem closely related to the cornering characteristics of radial tires. The analysis of this problem has been considered to be so difficult mathematically in describing the asymmetric deformation of a radial tire contacting with the roadway, that few papers have been published. In this paper, we present an analytical approach to this problem by using a spring bedded ring model consisting of sidewall spring systems in the radial, the lateral, and the circumferential directions and a spring bed of the tread rubber, together with a ring strip of the composite belt. Analytical solutions for each belt deformation in the contact and the contact-free regions are connected by appropriate boundary conditions at both ends. Galerkin's method is used for solving the additional deflection function defined in the contact region. This function plays an important role in determining the contact pressure distribution. Numerical calculations and experiments are conducted for a radial tire of 175SR14. Good agreement between the predicted and the measured results was obtained for two dimensional contact pressure distribution and the camber thrust characterized by the camber angle.

The two-pion production in pp-collisions has been investigated in exclusive measurements from threshold up to Tp = 1.36 GeV . Total and differential cross sections have been obtained for the channels pnπ+π0, ppπ+π-, ppπ0π0 and also nnπ+π+. For intermediate incident energies Tp > 1 GeV , i.e. in the region, which is beyond the Roper excitation but at the onset of ΔΔ excitation the total ppπ0π0 cross section falls behind theoretical predictions by as much as an order of magnitude near 1.2 GeV, whereas the nnπ+π+ cross section is a factor of five larger than predicted. A model-unconstrained isospin decompostion of the cross section points to a significant contribution of an isospin 3/2 resonance other than the Δ(1232). As a possible candidate the Δ(1600) is discussed.

Calculations have been made of the cross-section for ionization of the inner shells of atoms by electron impact in the cases of the K-shells of nickel, silver, mercury and of the three L-shells of silver and mercury.The agreement with experiment is reasonably good for the K-shell ionization, but only fair in the case of the rather meagre experimental data available for the L-shell. The values obtained for the relative ionization in the K- and L-shells are in good agreement with those to be expected from experiment.

Complex ceramic core is the critical part for manufacturing hollow turbine blade in the investment casting process. The complex geometry, small inner structures and high-precision requirements of ceramic cores make them difficult to fabricate, and the shape and dimensional accuracy of ceramic cores are very low in factory practice. To understand the deformation characteristics of ceramic cores, a noisy points recognition algorithm, an extraction method of measuring cross-section contour points and a B-spline iterative fitting algorithm using dominant points of chord deviation are proposed. First, the cross-section contour points were provided through registration, slicing and intersection methods. Second, the noisy points were deleted by convex noisy points and concave noisy points recognition algorithms. Third, the cross-section contour curve of the ceramic core was fitted through B-spline iterative fitting method with chord deviation dominant points. The curves fitted with chord deviation points and curves fitted with local maximum curvature points were compared with simulating data and scanning data, respectively, and the results show that B-spline fitting curve needs fewer chord deviation points than local maximum curvature points, 24.4% fewer in simulation validation and 12.5% fewer in experimental validation. In the end, the bending deformation, torsion deformation and shrinkage deformation errors of ceramic core are established by fitting contour curves of serial cross sections of the ceramic core.

Extending a previous analysis1 the double charmonium production [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] has been investigated with a data set of 155 fb-1 with the Belle detector. Theoretical predictions for the cross section are one order of magnitude lower than the measured value and this discrepancy is still not understood. In a very recent update with a dataset of 285 fb-1 strong evidence for a new charmonium state at a mass of 3.940 GeV was found.

The cross section for electron capture by Kr+ ions from rare gas atoms between 30 and 120 keV is found to be in good agreement with previous measurements where these exist, except for neon. The Rapp–Francis model gives an acceptable fit to the energy dependence of these and higher energy data but is too large by a factor of about five. In contrast the Landau–Zener model predictions are too large for helium and neon and too small for the heavier targets unless metastable states of krypton with large polarizabilities dominate the cross section.

Studies on the cross-sections of (n,n[Formula: see text]) reactions which are energetically possible, about 14 MeV neutrons are quite scarce. In this paper, the cross-sections of (n,n[Formula: see text] nuclear reactions at [Formula: see text]14–15 MeV are analyzed by using a new empirical formula based on the statistical theory. We show that neutron cross-sections are closely related to the [Formula: see text]-value of nuclear reaction, in particular for (n,n[Formula: see text]) channels. Results obtained with this empirical formula show good agreement with the available measured cross-section values. We hope that the estimations on the cross-sections using the present formalism may be helpful in future studies in this field.

<sub></sub> In this paper we present our calculation of the cross section ionization by electron impact of C V, N VI and O VII. Using the Flexible Atomic Code (FAC), we obtain the cross sections for the ionization of these ions from the ground state 1<sup>1</sup>S, and from the unstable states 2<sup>1</sup>S and 2<sup>3</sup>S. Our results are in good agreement with those based on the Coulomb Born (CB) approximation and the available measurements.
