Steady long slender droplets in two-dimensional straining motion

The recent analysis by Acrivos & Lo (1978) concerning the breakup of a long slender droplet in an axisymmetric straining motion is extended to the case of a two-dimensional hyperbolic flow. It is found that, although the cross-section of the droplet becomes significantly non-circular, the theoretical criterion for breakup is effectively the same as in the axisymmetric case. The theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the available experimental results.

Abstract The spring characteristics of a radial tire loaded on a crossbar put on a roadway was analyzed with a spring bedded ring model. Nonlinear radial and tangential spring effects of the sidewall and large deformation of the tread were considered. The tread curvature in the cross section was found to be the most important structural factor for elucidating the enveloping properties of a radial tire in contact with a crossbar. Experimental verifications of the spring effect and the tread deformation of a radial tire were in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

The cross section for the muon bremsstrahlung process is calculated as a function of the nuclear form factor in the Born approximation following the Bethe and Heitler theory. The influence of the nuclear form factor is greater than that taken by Christy and Kusaka. The simple analytical expression for the effect of the screening of the atomic electrons is found. The influence of a decrease in the cross section upon the interpretation of some experimental results is estimated.

The two-pion production in pp-collisions has been investigated in exclusive measurements from threshold up to Tp = 1.36 GeV . Total and differential cross sections have been obtained for the channels pnπ+π0, ppπ+π-, ppπ0π0 and also nnπ+π+. For intermediate incident energies Tp > 1 GeV , i.e. in the region, which is beyond the Roper excitation but at the onset of ΔΔ excitation the total ppπ0π0 cross section falls behind theoretical predictions by as much as an order of magnitude near 1.2 GeV, whereas the nnπ+π+ cross section is a factor of five larger than predicted. A model-unconstrained isospin decompostion of the cross section points to a significant contribution of an isospin 3/2 resonance other than the Δ(1232). As a possible candidate the Δ(1600) is discussed.

Simple wall correction rules for two-dimensional and nearly two-dimensional cavity flows in closed or free jet water tunnels, based on existing linearized analyses, are made. Numerical results calculated from these expressions are compared with existing experimental findings. The present theoretical predictions are, in general, in good agreement with data.

Unlike traditional rolling processes, reduction of rolling process of rail is along two vertical directions and the broadening of rolled piece is controlled. In this study, industrial experiments and a simulation model of the rolling process of rail were conducted to investigate the behaviors of porosities in billet during the rolling process of rail. The experimental and simulated results revealed that porosities moved toward the center on the cross section of the rolled piece and the porosities region reduced from a rectangle with the size (76.7 × 93.3 mm) to an isosceles trapezoid with the size {(12.8 + 18.5 mm) × 47.2 mm} during the rolling process of rail. The shapes of the porosities changed from circles with the diameters smaller than 6 mm to short cracks with the lengths shorter than 10 mm on the cross section. The two vertical reduction directions and the controlled broadening of rolled piece both counted against the closure of porosity. The simulated results were mostly in agreement with the experimental results.

Concrete cracking causes a gradual change in strain distributions along the cross section height of reinforced concrete beams, which will finally affect their instantaneous stiffness. A method for assessing the stiffness is proposed based on the gradual change, which is considered through modeling different strain distributions for key sections in cracked regions. Internal force equilibria are adopted to find a solution to top strains and neutral axes in the models, and then the inertias of the key sections are calculated to assess the beam stiffness. The proposed method has been validated using experimental results obtained from tests on five reinforced concrete beams. The predicted stiffness and displacements are shown to provide a good agreement with experimental data. The instantaneous stiffness is proven to greatly depend on the crack number and depth. This dependence can be exactly reflected by the proposed method through simulating the gradual change in concrete strain distributions.

Calculations have been made of the cross-section for ionization of the inner shells of atoms by electron impact in the cases of the K-shells of nickel, silver, mercury and of the three L-shells of silver and mercury.The agreement with experiment is reasonably good for the K-shell ionization, but only fair in the case of the rather meagre experimental data available for the L-shell. The values obtained for the relative ionization in the K- and L-shells are in good agreement with those to be expected from experiment.

Extending a previous analysis1 the double charmonium production [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] has been investigated with a data set of 155 fb-1 with the Belle detector. Theoretical predictions for the cross section are one order of magnitude lower than the measured value and this discrepancy is still not understood. In a very recent update with a dataset of 285 fb-1 strong evidence for a new charmonium state at a mass of 3.940 GeV was found.

New closed-form expressions are introduced for ax-symmetric progressive axial collapse of pipes that use a plastic folding mechanism based on variable length of an active plastic hinge zone. A procedure for determination of a load—displacement curve of axial pipe collapse is presented. Theoretical predictions give a good agreement with the experimental results owing to the influence of presented new refinements.
