The confusion of lecturers in teaching English with specific and suitable material for students who choose majors other than the English department is the main problem mostly encountered found by the writers is the basic reason for conducting this research. The main purpose of having this article is to fill the absence of material provided for students in Accounting Department in Riau University. Through descriptive methods, qualitative approaches and instruments used in the form of a close-ended questionnaire in which the form of questions refer to the need analysis proposed by Hutchinson & Water (necessities, wants, and lacks) of the students, initialized and complemented with their latest English language level and an adaptation questionnaire from Adnan was researched as well. The data was  obtained from a number of students majoring in Accounting for academic year of 2020/2021 class E at the Faculty of Economics, Riau University which were converted to frequency and rounded to a percentage. Dominated by students who have basic English skills, the students have various necessities, wants, and lacks in learning English. Eventually based on the finding, a proposed material model was framed.

The importance of English language course to be taught in most universities in Indonesia resulted in a policy especially at Universitas Negeri Padang in providing English as a General Course (MKU-English) to be taught to students. The importance of learning material in MKU-English attracted the attention of researchers to analyze the needs of students related to teaching materials such as what is the suitable teaching material to be taught to large classes such as MKU which contains students from various departments. This needs analysis research aims to identify and explain the needs of students that will be as the initial foundation of development of teaching materials covering aspects of the topics, types of text, and skill and components of the language. The samples of this research were 381 students who were taking MKU-English in academic year 2017-2018. By analyzing the results of the questionnaire that has been disseminated, it was found that the students wanted a variety of topics. In addition, students need to learn the types of argumentative and descriptive texts to support their reading skills. In addition, teaching materials are also emphasized on the integration of language components such as grammar.

This study aimed at investigating the effect of teaching English Literature on the EFL Learners' output. This study adopted a quasi-empirical method. The sample of the study consisted of (100) English teachers. The population of the study was all English teachers in Khartoum locality in the first period in the academic year 2017 / 2018. A questionnaire was constructed to the teachers to collect data. The study used the SPSS program to analyze the data. The results revealed statistically significant differences in students 'output because the study participants strongly agreed to (14) items in the questionnaire, which their  average ranged from (4.20 to 5.00) and that means that teaching English Literature is essential and necessary for EFL Learners because its effects on their output in English language. In the light of the study findings the researcher recommended that Curricula designers, educators, and experts should adopt literature-based syllabuses or include at least literature in the syllabuses.

Abstract The increasing role of English in this era of globalization seems to force us to recognize that English has a great impact on all aspects of life, so learning the English language is a must. Previously, studying English at Indonesian universities was limited to General English or English General Purposes, which became general subjects. However, over time, learning English has been developed specifically for English for Specific Purposes. This study is intended to show how the use of English learning at universities, especially in vocational education, works. In this study, the literature study was chosen as the research method. The literature study shows that the use of General English and English for Specific Purposes in higher education is very different. Where there is no special learning material for teaching General English. The learning material usually contains general knowledge of English. Unlike English for Specific Purposes, where teaching English for Specific Purposes requires special materials that are tailored to the needs of students depending on the subject. Keywords: Use, General English, English for Specific Purposes, University, Vocational Education. __________________________ Abstrak Meningkatnya peran bahasa Inggris di era globalisasi ini seolah memaksa kita untuk mengakui bahwa bahasa Inggris mempunyai pengaruh besar di segala aspek kehidupan sehingga mempelajari bahasa Inggris merupakan hal yang wajib. Sebelumnya di Indonesia, pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di perguruan tinggi hanya sebatas General English atau English for General Purposes yang menjadi mata kuliah umum, namun seiring berjalannya waktu pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dikembangkan lagi secara khusus dalam mata kuliah English for Specific Purposes. Studi ini memiliki tujuan untuk melihat bagaimana penerapan kedua pembelajaran bahasa Inggris tersebut di perguruan tinggi khususnya pada pendidikan vokasi. Studi pustaka dipilih sebagai metode penelitian dalam studi ini. Dari studi kepustakaan tersebut diperoleh hasil bahwa penerapan General English dan English for Specific Purposes di perguruan tinggi sangatlah berbeda antara keduanya. Dimana tidak ada materi pembelajaran khusus terhadap pengajaran General English. Materi pembelajaran biasanya berisikan pengetahuan umum tentang bahasa Inggris. Beda halnya dengan English for Specific Purposes, dimana dalam pengajaran English for Specific Purpose, dibutuhkan materi khusus yang disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan dari mahasiswa sesuai dengan bidang yang mereka ambil. Abstract: The objective of this research was to develop a English learning material model for an Extracurricular Program in Elementary Schools. A Research and Development methodology was used involving the following steps: analyzing students’ and teachers’ needs, evaluating the existing learning materials, designing a new learning materials, validating the learning materials by experts, revising learning materials, trying out the learning materials, and revising learning materials. It was found that the existing learning materials were not appropriate for the students’ characteristics and were not organised in a systematic way. Students and teachers indicated that they appreciated enjoyable English language learning materials such as songs, stories and games. Based on these findings a new model for developing materials was developed for Extracurricular English Program in Elementary Schools.

This research problem comes from low of students’ score of reading comprehension at English program academic year 2012/2013. It could be seen from some students failed in reading comprehension I. In order to researcher would do classroom action research by applying Think Pair Share technique to improve students reading comprehension on reading II. Purpose of this research were to describe applying Think Pair Share technique on reading comprehension of English program and knowing how can Think Pair Share improve students’ reading comprehension. In collecting data, researcher used qualitative data that consist of observation sheet, field note, and interview. In quantitative data, she used tasks and tests. In making note about what happened in this research, she helped by collaborator who teach reading comprehension too in English Department. This classroom action research consisted of two cycles; each of cycles consisted of four meeting. Three meeting did treatments, and one meeting for test. Related to finding of this research, Think Pair Share technique could improve reading comprehension. In addition, the factor that influence students’ learning by applying this technique were interesting technique, interesting topic of learning material then lecturer guiding on students in understanding learning material. The improvement of students’ learning could be proved on students’ score in each cycles. Mean score students’ reading comprehension for the first cycle was 63.8, then second cycle was 73.3. This research can be concluded that classroom action research by applying Think Pair Share technique could improve students’ reading comprehension on Reading II course at English program STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat.

The research aims to find out the English Materials need of the students of Genetic Computer School Singapore in Learning English. The quantitative and qualitative method were conducted in this research to provide the description of the students’ needs. In collecting the data, the researcher applied interview for lecturers and questionnaire for the students as the instrument of the research. There were two lecturers and thirty of second-semester students in the 2017-2018 academic year as participants in this research by conducting purposive sampling.The result of this research revealed that students of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) mostly needed two skills in learning English. First, speaking skill that is to communicate in English and to present their final project exam. Second, writing skill is used to do their assignment and final report in English. Language element which most important and needed by the students is vocabulary, then followed by grammar. The interview result showed that in teaching English the lecturers do not have permanent syllabuses for four semesters and the existing materials are design based on lecturers perception, it is not based on students needs. The information of this research as the recommendation for the institution that might be used as guidance to design the English syllabuses.

Code-switching is a phenomenon studied in sociolinguistics. It exists in multilingual societies like in Indonesia, where people use more than one language to communicate including in classroom interaction, especially in the process of teaching English as a foreign language. This research aimed to find out the types and the functions of code-switching used by English lecturers in teaching English to Non-English Department Students at FKIP of Lambung Mangkurat University in the Academic Year of 2017/2018. This research was conducted through the descriptive-qualitative method. The subjects were the lecturers of English class for Non-English Department Students or Mata Kuliah Dasar Umum (MKDU) Bahasa Inggris Class. The researchers used observations and confirmed the results from the interviews. The data were analyzed by data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing or verification. The research result indicated that in the process of teaching English, the lecturers sometimes switched their languages: English, Bahasa Indonesia, Banjarese, and Arabic. There were three types of code-switching used by the lecturers which were tag-switching, intrasentential-switching, and intersentential switching. While for the function, there were three functions of code-switching used by the lecturers which were topic-switch, affective-function, and repetitive function. In conclusion, the lecturers switched their languages in some types and for various functions depending on the situation of their teaching activity and students’ need

<p>This study emphasizes the use of language shift in the English language teaching classroom. Language shift is a common phenomenon in multilingual conversations, in this case, in the teaching and learning process in language classrooms. The purposes of the study are to find out the use and the roles of language shift in EFL classrooms, how the roles contributed to the Teaching English as Foreign Language in the EFL, and how the language shift affects the process of teaching and in the EFL classroom. The study employed a qualitative approach by using interview and classroom observations as the instruments of the research. The study was a case study in the teaching and learning process of Grammar III to the second-grade students of English department in Universitas Galuh Ciamis. The findings of the study revealed that using language shift while learning and teaching English is useful in the process of teaching and learning English as a foreign language, in this case in the subject of Grammar III subject; and that code-switching as one of the kinds of language shift is necessary and inevitable in language classrooms.</p>

The purpose of the study was to develop a learning model on writing, based on reflection strategy. The strategy would allow the students to read the text then develop the main idea. Therefore the problem of this research : (1) what kind of learning model that can develop the students writing ability? (2) is the using of the strategy effective to develop students competence in writing? (3) in what level are the students interest toward the using of a strategy in writing subject? This development research consisted of some steps, they are (1) need analysis (2) model design (3) implementation (4) model evaluation. The need analysis was applied through discussion among the writing lecturers to create a learning model for writing subject. To see the effectiveness of the model, an experiment would be delivered for one class. The instrument and learning material would be validated by the experts. The research used development design. The researcher would do need analysis, creating prototype, content validation, and limited empiric experiment to the sample. In each step, there should be an assessment and revision to the drafts before continue to the next steps. The second stage, the prototype would be tested empirically to four classes at STKIP YPUP for English Department. Implementing the test greatly was done through the action research and followed by evaluation and validation from the experts.

The objectives of the study are to describe the textbooks used by English teachers at present and its quality for Office Administration program; to explain to what extend do the teachers and the students need of ESP-Content based English materials in their English textbook and  to describeEnglish skills and the material of ESP for Office Administration students. To get the data for the study, two sets of questionnaire were used. First was questionnaire for teacher, second questionnaire for students. The steps for analyzing the data were (1) Selecting the data from the result of the questionnaire ,(2) Identifying the data about student’s need in the ESP material and the English textbook, (3) Classifying the data from the teacher and student’s answer,(4) Calculating percentage of answers in the questionnaire,(5) Making conclusion.The result of the study shows that  teacher used two English textbooks in teaching English. The English textbooks have a good quality, in term of the learners’ activities, the picture and illustration. However the material in the textbook was not appropriate with the student need in Office Administration Program. The students and the teacher need English textbook which contains with the ESP. The English textbook should contain the items based the students need and theEnglish skill needed by the students in Office Administration Program.
