Seal-free, media-lubricated rolling bearings have a high-energy efficiency as the absence of the seal minimizes frictional loss and increases the efficiency of the driven machine. In addition, the environment is protected by the absence of hazardous lubricants. However, media-lubrication increases tribocorrosive attack on the bearing surface. Therefore, the tribocorrosion resistance of the bearing surface can be increased by a thermal surface treatment called low-temperature plasma nitriding. The produced “expanded martensite” in martensitic steels features a high hardness with comparatively good corrosion resistance. Tribocorrosion tests in 0.9 % NaCl-solution show that the material loss could be reduced by 70 % due to expanded martensite compared to the initial state of the steel.

In the article changes in the structure and mechanical properties of R6M5 steel surface layer after electrolytic-plasma nitriding are shown. The optimal mode of electrolytic-plasma nitriding of R6M5 high-speed steel in electrolyte based on carbamide, which allows saturation of the surface with nitrogen from low-temperature plasma and get the modified layer of high hardness and wear-resistance. It is established, that after electrolytic-plasma nitriding reduced R6M5 steel wear rate and increases its resistance to abrasive wear. Perspectivity of use an electrolytic-plasma nitriding method to improve performance cutting tools made from R6M5 steel is shown.

Background: Modularity of metal-on-metal (MoM) implants has come under scrutiny due to concerns regarding additional sources of metal debris. This study is a retrieval analysis of implants from the same manufacturer with the same MoM bearing surface. The difference between the implants was presence or absence of modular junctions. Methods: This is a retrospective study of 31 retrieved implants from 31 patients who received a Conserve Wright Medical MoM hip prosthesis. The 31 implants consisted of 16 resurfacings and 15 implants with modular junctions; 4 conventional THAs and 11 modular-neck THAs. Results: 43% of pre-revision MRI scans performed on resurfacing implants and 91% performed on the modular implants illustrated evidence of an adverse local tissue reaction. There was no difference in pre-revision blood metal ion levels or bearing surface wear between the resurfacings and modular implants. The neck-head tapers of the modular group showed low levels of material loss. However, the neck-stem tapers showed increased severity of corrosion and material loss Conclusions: The modular implants had an increased incidence of adverse local tissue reaction. This could be related to the presence of modular junctions, particular the neck-stem junction which showed increased susceptibly to corrosion

Abstract To use effectively any radiation detector in high-temperature plasma experiments, it must have a lot of benefits and fulfill a number of requirements. The most important are: a high energy resolution, linearity over a wide range of recorded particle energy, high detection efficiency for these particles, a long lifetime and resistance to harsh conditions existing in plasma experiments and so on. Solid-state nuclear track detectors have been used in our laboratory in plasma experiments for many years, but recently we have made an attempt to use these detectors in spectroscopic measurements performed on some plasma facilities. This paper presents a method that we used to elaborate etched track diameters to evaluate the incident projectile energy magnitude. The method is based on the data obtained from a semiautomatic track scanning system that selects tracks according to two parameters, track diameter and its mean gray level.
