Tulsi, the famous "unmatched" plant of India, is one of the most popular and beneficial of the numerous therapeutic and health-promoting herbs. Ayurvedic and Unani systems Medicinal natural products are increasingly being investigated in clinical trials for superior pharmacological responses and lack of side effects compared to symptomatic agents. Ocimum sanctum, often referred to as "Holy Basil" or "Tulsi," is known in the traditional Ayurvedic literature for its use in the treatment of many illnesses. The active ingredients obtained from plants, and their biological function in disease prevention have stimulated people's curiosity. Non-melanoma skin cancer is one of the major ailments in the United States. Effective drugs that can cure skin cancers are limited. Moreover, the available drugs have toxic side effects. Therefore, skin cancer drugs with less toxic side effects are urgently needed. To achieve this goal, we focused our work on identifying potent lead compounds from marine natural products. Five lead compounds identified from a class of pyrroloiminoquinone natural products were evaluated for their ability to selectively kill squamous cell carcinoma (SCC13) skin cancer cells using an MTT assay. The toxicity of these compounds was also evaluated against the normal human keratinocyte HaCaT cell line. The most potent compound identified from these studies, C278 was further evaluated for its ability to inhibit cancer cell migration and invasion using a wound-healing assay and a trans-well migration assay, respectively. To investigate the molecular mechanism of cell death, the expression of apoptotic and autophagy proteins was studied in C278 treated cells compared to untreated cells using western blot. Our results showed that all five compounds effectively killed the SCC13 cells, with compound C278 being the most effective. Compound C278 was more effective in killing the SCC13 cells compared to HaCaT cells with a two-fold selectivity. The migration and the invasion of the SCC13 cells were also inhibited upon treatment with compound C278. The expression of pro-apoptotic and autophagy proteins with concomitant downregulation in the expression of survival proteins were observed in C278 treated cells. In summary, the marine natural product analog compound C278 showed promising anticancer activity against human skin cancer cells and holds potential to be developed as an effective anticancer agent to combat skin cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To contrast scientific facts with suggested manufacturers' claims regarding food supplements (natural products) marketed for enhanced athletic prowess. DATA SOURCES: A MEDLINE search was performed to obtain documentation supporting the claims of natural-product manufacturers. In addition, several references pertaining to pharmacognosy, natural products, herbs, pharmacy practice, and sports medicine were reviewed. Claims were obtained from promotional advertisements in bodybuilding magazines, product labels, and fact sheets for sales representatives in nutrition and health-food stores. DATA EXTRACTION: We reviewed all of the clinical trials, published between 1966 and 1992, relative to the manufacturers' claims regarding these products. DATA SYNTHESIS: Pertinent human and/or animal studies supporting each natural product were compared with the manufacturers' claims. CONCLUSIONS: We found that there was no published scientific evidence to support the promotional claims for a large proportion of the products (8/19,42 percent). Only 4 of 19 products (21 percent) were associated with any documented human clinical trials supporting their promotional claims. Six of 19 agents (32 percent) had some scientific documentation to support their promotional claims; however, these products were judged to be marketed in a misleading manner.

The main objective of present study was to prepare a polyherbal scrub incorporated into gel. The use of natural ingredients to fight against acne, wrinkle and also to control secretion of oil is known as natural or herbal cosmetics. Herbal cosmeceuticals usually contain the plant parts which possess antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti aging properties. Herbal cosmetics are the safest product to use routine with no side effects and cosmeceuticals are the product which influences the biological function of skin. In this preparation Green apple , cinnamon, Millet, Sandalwood, Neem , Turmeric and honey is used as active ingredients and incorporated into the gel which is prepared with carbopol of different grades. Other ingredients like propylene glycol, Triethanolamine; methyl parahydroxy benzoate was added along with sodium lauryl sulfate into the gel. The prepared gel was evaluated for various parameters such as appearance, pH, viscosity, Spreadability, washability, irritability and found to be satisfied with all required characterizations. Abstract It is frequently assumed, particularly in the last 15 plus years, that “Natural Product Structures” are no longer a source of drugs in the twenty-first century. In fact, this is not at all true. Even today, in the search for novel agents against manifold diseases, natural product structures, some quite old and some quite recent, are behind the compounds that are either recently (last 5–10 years) approved or that are now in clinical trials against manifold diseases of man. This chapter will cover agents approved since 2010 to the end of 2017 by the US FDA and its equivalent in other countries, plus selected agents that have entered clinical trials against major diseases such as cancer and infections that have “in their chemical pedigree” a natural product structure, even if the final product may be totally synthetic in nature.
