THE READABILITY OF ENGLISH TEXTBOOK FOR THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMK NEGERI I BINJAI

This research was aimed to find out whether the English reading texts areappropriate or not in terms of the readability level for the tenth grade students ofSMK Negeri 1 Binjai. This study focuses on the readability level of Englishreading texts for grade X students of SMK Negeri 1 Binjai majoring in Bankingclass in the academic year 2015/2016. This study is categorized as descriptivequantitative research. The data of the study was seven reading texts from anEnglish textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris published by Kementerian Pendidikandan Kebudayaan in 2014 with various length and genres as the source of datatested to 30 students as the research sample. The instruments of the research wereFlesch-Kincaid Grade level and Cloze Procedure Test. For the Flesch-KincaidGrade Level Formula, the researcher counts the words, syllables, sentences, theaverage number of words per sentence and the average number of syllables perwords of the reading text to determine the level of readability of the English textsin students’ textbook. The cloze test was used to assess the difficulty in terms of areader’s understanding and response to the structure of the language of a text. Theresults of the study show that based on the cloze test result, the researcher gets theaverage score of 7 reading texts is 57.39% and based on the Flesch-Kincaid GradeLevel Formula the average score is 6 so it can be concluded that reading texts ofBahasa Inggris published by Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan in 2014are in the Independent level because the reading texts are readable andunderstandable to the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Binjai, and the textsare predicted to be quite easy. Therefore, the researcher takes a conclusion thatthis textbook is not appropriate to be used by the students at the tenth gradestudents of SMK Negeri 1 Binjai because they can read them by their own.

This study was carried out to find out the readability level of the reading texts in English Zone textbook by using Flesch Reading Ease Formula and Cloze Test at the tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Bandar. The population of this research was the tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Bandar in the academic year 2015/2016. The textbook consists of 181 pages with 29 reading texts in it. The researcher took 5 reading texts from the English textbook entitled English Zone published by Penerbit Erlangga and the tenth grade students of 30 students as the sample. The method used in this study was descriptive analysis using quantitative data. The instruments of the research were Flesch Reading Ease Formula and Cloze Test. The data were analyzed using Flesch Reading Ease Formula which is focused on the average number of the syllables per words. The result of the analysis by using Flesch Reading Ease Formula is grouped into three levels which are Very Easy, Easy, and Fairly Easy. The average readability score for all texts is 82.6 which implies that the text are in Fairly Easy Level. The result of the analysis by using Cloze Test, the average readability score of the five texts is 51.20% (Independent Level), the text are predicted to be of appropriate difficulty. It could be concluded that the reading texts were in the English Zone textbook were not suitable to be used by the students at the tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Bandar. Keywords :Readability, Textbook, Fesch Reading Ease Formula

Language is the most important aspect in human interaction. People communicate and interact with other using the language. In global community, English has become an international language that is used by many people around the world. Reading is one of English language skills and it is one of the ways to learn English. Reading activity should get more attention. It is because there are many students who get some difficulties in understanding a text. In this research inform the using of talking stick in teaching reading. The objective of this research was to find out whether there was any significant difference in improvement the reading ability of recount text of the tenth grade students of SMK Rosma Karawang in academic year 2018/2019 by using talking stick method. The method used was quantitative method. In this research the writer used pre-experimental design of one group pretest and posttest. The data were analyzed by using paired sample test and processed by using SPSS 23 for windows. This article discusses the English reading texts model using the Ecoliteracy Lexicons. The study aims to design and develop an example of English reading text by using the ecological or environment lexicons. This study applied the Educational Research and Development (R & D) method. It was conducted in Sumbawa District, West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. The instruments of this study were the validation sheet, a questionnaire sheet and a documentation instrument. The result of the study revealed that there are four types of English reading texts based on the ecoliteracy lexicons. The first is the English reading text-based-beaches marine lexicons, which have developed and designed the text using ecological lexicon Jempol Beach and Goa Beach lexicon. The second is the English reading text-based-historical architecture environment lexicons constructed the text by applying two ecological lexicons of Dalam Loka palace and Bala Puti Palace. The third is the English reading text-based-marine archipelagos environment lexicons, which used the Moyo Island and Ngali Island's ecological lexicons in developing and designing the English reading text.  The last one is the English reading text-based- traditional farmland environment lexicons, which was developed and designed using the ecological lexicons of Orong and Uma.

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan suplemen bahan ajar Bahasa Inggris membaca pemahaman yang kontekstual dan berkarakter sesuai model pembelajaran REACT yang memenuhi kelayakan bagi siswa kelas IX SMP. Metode penelitian menggunakan model pengembangan Borg and Gall (1989). Uji validasi dilaksanakan melalui uji ahli, uji perorangan, uji teman sejawat, dan uji kelompok kecil sedangkan uji efektifitas produk melalui pre-tes dan post-test. Data uji oleh ahli isi/desain dan media, perorangan, teman sejawat, dan tanggapan kelompok kecil dikumpulkan melalui angket, sedangkan hasil uji efektivitas penerapan dikumpulkan melalui test. Hasil-hasil uji dianalisis melalui statistik deskriptif kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Data hasil uji yang dikumpulkan melalui angket dianalisis menggunakan persentase dan hasilnya dikonversikan dengan tabel kualifikasi. Sedangkan hasil uji efektivitas penerapan, pretest dan post-test dianalisis menggunakan uji-t dan hasilnya dibandingkan dengan hipotesis. Hasil penelitian terhadap pengembangan produk menunjukkan bahwa hasil uji validasi ahli pembelajaran terhadap isi sebesar 92,00% dengan kualifikasi hampir sempurna dengan perbaikan sangat ringan, hasil validasi ahli desain sebesar 92,00% dan hasil validasi ahli media sebesar 88,00% dengan kualifikasi sangat baik perlu revisi ringan, hasil validasi perorangan terhadap produk sebesar 92,22%, hasil validasi/uji teman sejawat sebesar 93,33%, hasil validasi kelompok kecil sebesar 92,20%, dan dari hasil pre-test dan post-test diperoleh nilai rata-rata kelas sebesar 66,75 dan 80,87. Uji efektivitas penerapan dilakukan melalui uji-t terhadap hasil pretest dan post-test. Hasil uji efektivitas menunjukkan bahwa hipotesis alternatif diterima, yaitu terdapat perbedaan signifikan antara hasil test sebelum dan sesudah penerapan bahan ajar yang dikembangkan. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa suplemen bahan ajar membaca pemahaman Bahasa Inggris kontekstual berkarakter untuk kelas IX semester 1 layak untuk dipergunakan. Kata Kunci : bahan ajar, pembelajaran kontekstual, membaca pemahaman, pendidikan berbasis karakter This research was aimed at developing contextual English reading (comprehension) supplement for the ninth graders of SMP semester 1 by the implementation of REACT model of learning in the academic year 2016/2017. Product validation included experts validation, individual validation from the students, teachers validation, and classical validation, while the effectiveness of the product was done through the analysis of the pre-test and post-test. Data of evaluation were collected through questionaires distribution, and tests. The result of evaluation was analyzed through descriptive qualitative and quantitative technique. The data from questioners were analyzed in percentage, meanwhile, the data of the pre-test and post-test was analyzed using t-test. The t-test result was compared to the hypothesis. The result of validation form showed that the supplement was in a proper quality. The expert validation about the content and instructional design reached to 92% and media validation reached to 88%. They are categorized into nearly perfect and very good. In a line with this, the result of the t-test showed that there were a significant difference between pre-test and post-test result. The average score for the pre-test was 66,75 while the average score for the post-test was 80,87. It means the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Overall, the supplement product met the proper qualification to be used in the real practical classroom activity. keyword : learning material, contextual learning, reading comprehension, character-based education

This research was aimed to determine the implementation of cooperative learning through two stay two stray type toward the students achievement and behavior on biodiversity material on tenth grade students in MAN 1 Pontianak. Quasi experiment by control group pre-test post-test design was used as the form of research. The tools of data collecting were students test result in essay and questionnaires. The students average score of post-test by using two stay two stray learning method is 28,27 meanwhile the students behaviour average is 73,74 %. It showed that the implementation of two stay two stray can increase students learning achievement and behaviour.Keywords: two stay two stray, biodiversity.

This research aimed to analyze and describe the readability of reading texts in atextbook entitled Talk Active 2 for the Eleventh Grade Senior High School. Thisresearch concerned on measuring six reading texts in the textbook which wereselected by using random sampling. The measurements used in this research wereFlesch Reading Ease Formula and Cloze Test. The test was distributed to the 40eleventh grade students at SMA Swasta Galih Agung. Furthermore, the writerused descriptive method. From the analysis by using Flesch Reading EaseFormula, it was found that 3 of 6 texts are readable for the eleventh gradestudents. The three texts are the third text Emperor Penguin (57.06), fifth textShould Parents Censor Their Children’s Reading Material? (63.59) and sixth textDewi Sartika (53.47). But, only the third text and sixth text are appropriate for theeleventh grade students because the scores are between 50 to 60 (Fairly Difficult)which estimated for 10th-12th grade. The average readability score of the six textsby using Flesch Reading Ease Formula is 51.35 (Fairly Difficult) which isappropriate for 10th-12th grade. Moreover, the results by using cloze test showedthat text 6 has score 78.80% (Independent Level) which is predicted to be quiteeasy and the students can read the text independently. Meanwhile, text 1 to 5 havescore between 40% to 60% (Instructional Level). The average score of six texts is59.7% (Instructional Level) which predicted to be appropriate difficulty and it canbe concluded that the reading texts are appropriate for the eleventh grade studentsand the students need teacher’s assistance to comprehend the texts.

Abstract: The Implementation of TGT Learning Model to Improve Achievement, Participation, and Attitude of Tenth Grade Students. This research aimed at improving students achievement, participation, and attitude on a training course Technical Drawing Interpretation as the results of the implementation instructional type of Team Game Tournament.The researchwas a class-room action research conducted in two cycles with the subjects of Class X TSM 1 of students at SMKN 3 Singaraja in the academic year 2013/2014.The data sources were formative tests conducted at the end of every cycle, classroom observation, and questionnaire for the students. Data were ana-lyzed descriptively to know the improvement of students’ achievement in the training course, to ex-plain the active participation of students during the teaching and learning process, and also to explain the students’ attitude towards the implementation of TGT in the course. The findings of the research revealed that there was an improvement in students’ achievement, from the average score of 52.19 in the pre-cycle, 69.84 at the end of Cycle 1, and 76.41 in Cycle 2. The research also found that stu-dents became very actively participated in the class and also had very positive views towards the im-plementation of TGT in the classroom. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa pada mata diklat Menginterpretasikan Gambar Teknik dan sekaligus mengetahui keaktifan siswa sebagai akibat penerapan pembelajaran tipe Teams-Games Tournament (TGT) pada proses pembelajaran mata diklat tersebut. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan kelas yang dilakukan dalam 2 siklus dengan subyek penelitian adalah siswa kelas X TSM1 SMKN 3 Singaraja pada tahun ajaran 2013/2014. Sumber data diambil dari tes di akhir setiap siklus, observasi kelas dan angket pendapat siswa tentang implementasi TGT. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif untuk menjelaskan peningkatan hasil belajar serta keaktifan siswa dalam proses pembelajaran serta tanggapan siswa terhadap pembelajaran yang menerapkan tipe TGT. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan adanya peningkatan hasil belajar siswa dari sebelum dan setelah menerapkan model pembelajaran TGT pada mata diklat Menginterpretasikan Gambar Teknik, dimana nilai rata-rata siswa yang sebelumnya 52,19 pada pra siklus meningkat menjadi 69,84 pada akhir Siklus 1 dan menjadi 76,41 pada akhir Siklus 2. Hasil penelitian juga menunjukan partisipasi aktif dan tanggapan positif siswa dalam implementasi TGT di kelas TSM1. Kata-kata kunci: hasil belajar, partisipasi, sikap, Team Games Tournament (TGT)

Predicting readability level of reading texts can help the teachers to match the texts with student’s grade. The appropriate reading text is expected to ease the students in comprehending the material. This research focused on the readability level of English reading material found in English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris for first grade of Senior High School Published by Curriculum and Books Center, Research and Development Agency, Ministry of Education and Culture. This study attempts to find out whether the reading materials are appropriate or not in terms of readability level for the target students. This research used descriptive quantitative design. The object of the research is English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris for First Grade of Senior High School published by Curriculum 2013. The textbook consists fifteen chapters which contained kinds of reading materials such as dialogue and reading texts. The researcher only focuses on analyzing the reading materials. There are three kinds of genre found in this book, they are descriptive, recount and narrative. The data were collected by using document analysis. In calculating readability level, the researcher employed the Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) formula. The results of the study showed that there were 9 reading texts in the Bahasa Inggris textbook. From those 9 texts found that there were 3 descriptive texts, 4 recount texts, and 2 narrative texts. According to the analysis using Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) formula, the researcher found that there were 3 texts in Fairly Easy level, 3 texts in Fairly Difficult level, and 3 texts in Difficult level. In average, the texts are in Fairly Difficult level (57,3). Based on the theory of Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) formula, it is found that the texts are in the appropriate level for tenth grade students.Keyword: Readability level, Reading Material, Textbook.
