DEVELOPING ESP READING MATERIALS FOR THE ELEVENTH YEAR DRESSMAKING STUDENTS OF VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

The Objective of this research were: (1) To develop ERM to meet the needs of second grade of dressmaking students at SMKN 10 Medan, (2) To Design ERM which is suitable to the needs of second grade of dressmaking students at SMKN 10 Medan. The subjects were the eleventh year students of dressmaking department at SMKN 10 Medan. The study was a Research and Development (R & D) study which is adapted from Borg and Gall (1983). This research were conducted by six phases, they are, Gathering information and data, Analyzing data, Designing new reading materials, Validating new reading materials, Revising new reading materials, Revised-developing reading materials. The Instruments for collecting the data were 30 questionarries need analysis and interview students, teacher and practitioner. The results from the data were the students need authentic material which related and appropriate to their need in order they can understand English well. The developed materials were validated by two experts, one is a lecture and the other is a teacher. The validator scored 4 creteria. The research findings showed that the developed materials were appropriate to be implemented. The average score of validation was 4,72 (lecture score) and 4,75 (teacher score). Based on the results of the study, conclusion and suggestions are directed to the teachers and institution who are teaching in SMKN 10 Medan generally to create and to develop the materials based on students need.

This study dealt with the development of English Reading Materials of vocational school, Al-WashliyahTeladan Medan, majoring Software Engineering. The objectives of this study were to: 1) find out language skill and materials are needed by the students of Software Engineering, 2) develop the English materials for the majoring in software engineering students at the vocational high school grade XII. This study was conducted by Educational Research and Development R&D (Borg & Gall, 1989). The data of this research were from existing documents and the result of interview with teacher and student. The results of the research conveyed that the existing reading materials were mostly irrelevant because the title and content of the material was not appropriate and was not required for the students majoring in software engineering. The new English reading materials and syllabus were developed based on the students need related to the workplace. The materials and syllabus were developed from the existing materials from teacher. The developing materials were validated by two experts.

The objective of this study is to develop suitable procedure text materials for reading skill, for Beauty program students. It was found that procedure text materials provided in the students’ textbook were not suitable to the needs and interests of Beauty program students. This research was conducted based on educational research and development (R&D) through six steps, namely: gathering data, analyzing data, developing procedure text materials, validating procedure text materials, revising procedure text materials and final product. There are some instruments that were applied in this research namely questionnaire and interview .The subject of this study was XI Grade of Beauty program. Based on the needs analysis conducted there were 4 procedure texts related to Beauty program developed. The researcher developed the text by selecting and adapting relevant procedure texts related to Beauty program from internet and book as the sources. Then, the selected texts were adapted based on the principles of materials development in order to present well organized suitable procedure text materials. These developed procedure text materials had been validated by two experts and the average score gotten is 4.07. It is categorized “Good” since the mean is within the interval 3.40 < ≤ 4.19. It means that the developed procedure text materials for reading skill are suitable for the eleventh grade students of Beauty program. Key words: research and development (R&D), procedure text, Beauty program

The objective of this study was to develop English learning media based on students’ needs. This research was conducted in SMP N 37 Medan for students in grade VII which consists of 30 students. This study followed the steps of research and development proposed by Borg and Gall (1983), which are 1) need analysis; 2) planning (develop preliminary form of product); 3) Collecting data; 4) designing media; 4) media evaluation; 5) revising (designing final product). It was found that 96.66% students agreed that the existing an interactive learning medium currently used by the students of Junior High School. The more relevant media were developed based on student needs, which can provide opportunities for students to participate in the classroom. The learning media were developed into 4 media based on 4 units of speaking materials. Then the learning media were validated by two experts. The average score of the validation was 90. It showed that the developed learning media were very good, relevant and feasible.Keywords:       English learning media, speaking, visual art media.

This study dealt with the development of English Reading Materials of Senior High School in SMAN 10 Medan. The objectives of this study is to develop the English reading materials for students of SMAN 10 Medan which represent the characteristics of their sociocultural environment. The research was conducted at SMAN 10 Medan. The research procedures of this study were Research and Development (R & D) that were done through three phases: 1) evaluation and need analysis, 2) materials design, and 3) materials Validation. The instruments used in this research were a documentary sheet, questionnaire sheet, and interview sheet. The data from evaluation and need analysis were analyzed by using descriptive technique and the data from expert judgment results were analyzed using quantitative data analysis. The result of this study was a coursebook of local content-based reading materials which consist of 3 genres: recount genres, descriptive genres, and narrative genres, in which each genre consists of 2 texts complete with the tasks or exercises. Based on the experts� judgment results, the score was 87.06 which belonged to good category based on Dirgeyasa (2011), since the range is (70-89).

This study aimed to develop English reading materials needed for students of Cerdas Murni Islamic Junior High School through Authentic Material Approach (AMA).The objective of this study was to develop relevant English reading materials to the needs of Cerdas Murni Islamic Junior High School students especially eight grade . This study was conducted by Research and Development (R&D) design through six phases: 1) Collecting data, 2) Analyzing data, 3) Developing new materials, 4) Validating product 5) Revising materials, 6) final product. The data of this research were from the existing materials, syllabus,  students’ questionnaire, and the teachers’ interview. The result of this research showed that the existing materials were not suitable to the Islamic school students’ needs.. Therefore, new English reading materials were developed through Authentic Material Approach (AMA) principles in order to meet the Islamic students’ needs. Furthermore, developing English reading materials were recount text. Recount text expose personal recount “Tarawih Changed his Life and the biographical recounts of Prophet Muhammad SAW and Shalahuddin Al-Ayyubi”. The English reading materials were validated by English teacher and English lecturer. The purpose of this study are to describe how to develop English reading materials for the second grade of Vocational High School and to explain the advantages and disadvantages of developing English reading materials for the second grade of vocational high school. Using English reading material for developing the students’ ability of the second grade of vocational high school is one of the ways to make the students interested in learning English. In teaching English reading materials, this paper applies two phases (planning phase, implementing phase, evaluating phase) and PQRST (Preview, Question, Read, Summarize, Test) method. The advantages of developing English reading material for the second grade of vocational high school are: It can develop their vocabulary and grammar mastery. It is described that using reading materials in developing the students’ proficiency of English is very beneficial. The students get the systematic, effective, and efficient learning method, and also they can enjoy the teaching learning process. Encourage the student to improve their previous background knowledge of fundamental concepts. It can motivate the Students to actively reflect upon the material being studied prior to its presentation in class and to search for explanations or solutions on their own. While, the disadvantages are: It cannot develop the listening skill directly; It may happen that the students did not understand clearly about the generic structure and language feature of the text if they just pay attention with the meaning of each word. The writer hopes that this paper can be used as a reference for the teachers who want to improve their students’ ability, especially in reading ability. Furthermore, it can be a reference for the students of English department who want to write a paper or a thesis. Keywords: English Language, Reading, Vocational High School

This research is mainly intended to find out whether the writing materials based on English grammar in the student’s textbook for Vocational High school is compatible or not with English material. This research applies descriptive research. In collecting data, the researcher does content analysis. The data are analyzed by steps, (1) presenting the materials (2) comparing the materials (3) judging whether materials of English textbook appropriate with the grammar of writing materials or not (4) drawing conclusions. The result of the analysis shows that the percentage of the compatibility of writing skills developed writing materials in the textbook is 73,68%, it means the textbook is good and compatible with writing material  and the other skill which are developed in the textbook involve the compatibility of the listening materials, reading materials and speaking materials  are 26,31%. This research implies the textbook entitled “Modul Bahasa Inggris” at first grade for Vocational High School is good writing materials to support the learning process of English grammar. The study deals with the developing interactive media for senior high school students. The objective of this study is to find out how to develop interactive media for better speaking skill of senior high school students. The research was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D). The subject of this research was 2016/2017 students of the eleventh grade of Class XI IPA4 in SMAN 1 Batang Kuis. The number of the students was 30 students. The data of this study was collected by using need analysis questionnaire and experts’ judgment. Need analysis questionnaire was calculated by using percentage to get the information of students’ need before developing interactive media. Experts’ judgment was calculated by using likert data, mean and criteria interval of expert judgment to know the validity of interactive media which has been developed. After the data analyzed, it was found that the experts’ judgment result was 4.80 which had a very good criteria interval. The result of the research find that interactive media is a very good to be used in teaching speaking skill.
