LEXICAL AMBIGUITY IN READING ANALYTICAL EXPOSITION TEXTS FOR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

The objectives of this study were to find out the types of lexical ambiguity and the most dominant type of lexical ambiguity used in analytical exposition texts in English Today 2 and Advanced Learning English 2 textbooks. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The research was mainly focused on the four types of lexical ambiguity proposed by Saeed, such as homonymy, polysemy, synonymy and antonymy. In carrying out this study, the data were taken from analytical exposition texts in reading materials and exercise material from the two English textbooks which contained of ambiguous words. The result of the study indicated the numbers of lexical ambiguity were 46 words within homonymy (34,8%), polysemy (28,2%), synonymy (19,6%), and antonymy (17,4%).

This research aims to reveal to what extent the textbooks developed for senior high school students all around Indonesia have provided or developed the materials for vocabulary learning purpose to promote students’ competence in using English for their daily communication. This qualitative content analysis research was conducted with the content analysis research method and was carried out in Yogyakarta Special Territory from 2018 to 2019. The research data were collected and managed with the help of NVivo 11 Plus and NVivo 12 Plus Software. The data were gathered from three English textbooks for Senior High School Students: Bahasa Inggris X, Bahasa Ingris XI, and Bahasa Inggris XII, all of which were specifically developed by the Indonesian Government to be used by all SMA (Senior High School) students all over Indonesia. To achieve reliability agreement level of data, the Kappa Statistics reliability test was used; the result of which was > 0.75 (excellent). The research result shows that the contents of the three textbooks selected for this research in terms of vocabulary-related materials are not consistent; Not all textbooks and not all chapters presented the materials for the students to learn and improve their vocabulary. It is advisable that the English textbooks prepared all SMA students all over Indonesia develop materials or topics particularly the vocabulary consistently.

This article aims to design a learning media based on the events of Karang Resik as an effort to strengthen the values of nationalism in senior high school students in Tasikmalaya. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method, will be obtained from literature studies. Vidgram learning media is a learning media in the form of video that is integrated into Instagram media. The media of this event-based Karang Resik event illustrates the values of unity, freedom and a sense of unity among the Tasikmalaya people, Ciamis, TRI, Hizbullah, Sabilillah in the Karang Resik event. With the strengthen of nationalism values in senior high school students, this media can be a supporting medium for solving the problem of intolerance and conservatism in Tasikmalaya City, as well as being an example for the current condition of Tasikmalaya to create and build unity among all Tasikmalaya communities.

 The objectives of this study are; (1) to formulate patterns of coding used in conversation texts of the English Zone textbook, 2) to investigate how coding are structured in conversation texts of the English Zone textbook, and 3) to reason why the coding techniques are used in conversation texts of the English Zone textbook. The data were taken from conversation texts of students’ English textbook: English Zone for senior high school students year grade XI (SMA). Descriptive qualitative method was used in this study. There were six conversation texts as the data source was taken from students’ English textbook: English Zone. The findings of this study shown that there are two types of patterns of coding in conversation texts, namely congruent and metaphorical coding. Congruent coding patterns are built in complete mood and residue (at least using mood) and metaphorical coding patterns are built in elliptical mood pattern. Mood and residue pattern is caused by the system of the conversation is using Proposition system. It means the conversation texts involve the statement and question, in another word, the content of the conversation dominantly are about giving and demanding information.  It was found that conversation texts convey the simple structure of conversation which means to attract the readers or students to understand easier by using complete mood and residue and elliptical mood pattern of conversation text is in less number. Thus, those conversation text in English Zone textbook written in simple structures in case of language usage to make the message or information easier to understand. Keywords:English Zone Textbook; Congruent and Metaphor Coding;and Proposition System of Conversation Texts

ABSTRACT This study aimed to reveal the moral values in the narrative texts of English textbooks for senior high school students published by the Ministry of Education and Culture and also the English teachers’ and students’ responses at SMK Triguna Utama, South Tangerang City, related to the topic under investigation. This research used content analysis design. The data sources were the narrative texts in the English textbooks and teachers’ and students’ responses. The data were collected through documentation, interview, and questionnaire. Data analysis procedures consisted of perusing, eliciting, coding, tabulating, interpreting, drawing conclusions and validating. The research found that the English textbooks lacked fables and gave a smaller portion to Indonesian local stories. Moreover, the narrative texts were dominated by the value of kindness, while, fairness was included least explicitly in the stories. These findings were supported by the views and preferences of the teachers and students. Lastly, the teachers and students compactly argued that vocabulary is the greatest barrier to teaching and learning narrative text, and the effectiveness of the school’s atmosphere in instilling moral values still needed further research.   ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap nilai-nilai moral dalam teks naratif buku teks bahasa Inggris untuk siswa Sekolah Menengah Atas yang diterbitkan oleh Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan dan juga tanggapan guru dan siswa bahasa Inggris di SMK Triguna Utama, Kota Tangerang Selatan, terkait dengan topik yang diselidiki. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain analisis isi. Sumber datanya adalah teks naratif dalam buku teks bahasa Inggris dan tanggapan guru dan siswa. Data dikumpulkan melalui dokumentasi, wawancara dan angket. Sedangkan, prosedur analisis data meliputi pembacaan teks secara cermat, pemilahan data, penyandian, tabulasi, interpretasi, penarikan simpulan dan validasi. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa buku teks bahasa Inggris tersebut masih kekurangan fabel dan cerita lokal Indonesia. Selain itu, teks naratif didominasi oleh nilai kebaikan, sementara nilai keadilan kurang tergambarkan dalam cerita. Temuan ini didukung oleh pandangan dan preferensi para guru dan siswa. Terakhir, para guru dan siswa secara sepakat berpendapat bahwa kosa kata merupakan penghalang terbesar dalam pengajaran dan pembelajaran teks naratif, dan efektivitas atmosfer sekolah dalam menanamkan nilai moral masih memerlukan penelitian lebih lanjut.   How to Cite: Setiawan, I., Fahriany. Background: Language is method of human communication. It is used as means to communicate with other people. Research purposes: to find out the types of illocutionary act in Textbook : Modul Pengayaan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris Peminatan Semester 2,  to identify dominant kinds of illocutionary act in Textbook : Modul Pengayaan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris Peminatan Semester 2. Research methods: This reseacrh was designed as descriptive qualitative research. The technique of data collecting there are 3 steps. First, the researcher researcher tries to identify the data or the dialogues from the written conversation which are related to the statements of the problems according textbook. Second, the researcher analyzed and classified the types of illocutionary act and the dominant kinds of illocutionary act. Third, the researcher identified the illocutionary act found in Textbook : Modul Pengayaan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris Peminatan Semester 2 based on types of illocutionary acts. Research results: The total number of types of the data found were 292, there were 34 utterance of declaration, 92 utterances of representative, 48 utterances of expressive, 95 utterances of directives, and 26 utterances of commisive. The dominant type of illocutionary was found is directives with 95 utterences Conclusion: Those were declarative, representative, expressive, directive, and commisive. To be more specific, there are 40 utterances of declarative, 85 utterances of representative, 53 utterances of expressive, 87 utterances of directive, and 26 utterances of commisive.

Latar belakang dari penelitian ini adalah kurangnya pengetahuan masyarakat pada tradisi motong munggel, baik itu masyarakat Kabupaten Tasikmalaya secara khusus ataupun masyarakat Jawa Barat secara umumnya. Adapun tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan mengenai (1) sejarah tradisi motong munggel, (2) langkah-langkah dalam tradisi motong munggel, (3) unsur semiotik dalam tradisi motong munggel, dan (4) bahan ajar membaca artikel tradisi motong munggel. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu metode kualitatif desktiptif dengan teknik observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu pedoman wawancara dan kartu data. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah; pertama, sejarah mengenai tradisi motong munggel, dimana tradisi ini mulai dilaksanakan di Desa Jayamukti kurang lebih sejak tahun 1989; kedua, adanya langkah-langkah dalam tradisi motong munggel terdiri dari tiga bagian yaitu langkah-langkah sebelum, langkah-langkah saat berlangsung, dan langkah-langkah setelah berlangsungnya tradisi motong munggel; ketiga, tanda yang ditemukan dalam tradisi motong munggel berjumlah 23 tanda, yang terdiri atas 14 ikon, indeks sebanyak 6 , dan simbol sebanyak 3; keempat, hasil dari penelitian ini bisa dijadikan sebagai bahan pembelajaran membaca artikel budaya di SMA kelas XII. Tradisi motong munggel merupakan suatu tradisi yang harus dilestarikan. Selain dari memiliki tujuan, nilai-nilai dan tanda-tanda yang memiliki makna bagi kehidupanpun dapat dijadikan sebagai bahan pembelajaran membaca artikel di SMA kelas XII.AbstractThe background of this study was the lack of knowledge on Motong Munggel tradition of Tasikmalaya people in particular and West Java people in general. The purpose of this study was to describe all aspects of Motong Munggel tradition include; (1) the history, (2) the steps (3) the semiotic elements, and (4) reading article teaching and learning materials. The method used in this research was the descriptive qualitative method with observation, interview, and documentation techniques. The instruments used in this study were interview guidelines and data cards. The results of this study are as it follows: first, the history revealed that tradition of Motong Munggel began to be practiced in Jayamukti village since 1989; second, the steps in the Motong Munggel tradition consist of three parts, i.e. the preceding steps, in progress step, and the steps after Motong Munggel performed; third, there were 23 signs found consisted of 14 icons, six indexes, and three symbols; fourth, the results of this study can be used as teaching and learning material for cultural article reading of Grade XII Senior High School students. Motong Munggel is a tradition that has to be preserved. Besides it has meaningful goals, values and signs that have for people life it can also be used as teaching and learning material.

Literacy has the meaning and implications of basic reading and writing skills to acquire and manipulate knowledge through written texts, from metalinguistic analysis of grammatical units to the structure of oral and written texts. This study deals with the development of reading materials in school literacy movements for senior high school students based on local culture of Karo. The type of this study is development study that is the development of short story text reading materials based on character education as an ingredient in the school literacy movement. This development study refers to the development theory proposed by Borg and Gall. The conclusion of this study is the feasibility of reading material in the school literacy movement for senior high school students based on local culture of Karo is eligible and suitable to be used as reading material, based on the assessment of material experts, and design experts. The results of the assessment based on the responses of teachers and students in the Senior High School 1 of Berastagi concluded that reading material in the school literacy movement for senior high school students based on local culture of Karo had been found to be effective because it met the needs and overall criteria "very good".

Errors are deviations from things that have been known to be true, errors by students in solving problems can be used by the teacher as a tool in knowing the extent of student ability, so that it can be known the difficulties experienced by students in the learning process. The purpose of this research is to describe the types of errors made by students in solving physics problems on straight motion material at SMAN 5 Pekanbaru. Population in this research were 360 students of class X SMAN 5 Pekanbaru. Samples were taken randomly and a total of 72 students were obtained. This research instrument was in the form of essay questions which were arranged based on the types of errors commonly made by students. Data was collected by giving essay test questions to the research sample. Data analysis in this research uses descriptive analysis with percentage techniques, which provide an overview of the level of errors made by students. Using the six  questions that were tested, the most dominant type of error was obtained by students, namely the types of concept errors and data calculation errors, while the types of errors that were least experienced by students were the types of mathematical errors. For this reason, in learning physics on the topic of GLBB in class X SMA N 5 Pekanbaru, it is necessary to emphasize understanding of concepts and calculation of data that is more optimal so that students get better learning outcomes.

This study aims to describe the analysis model of framing on journalism discourse in Indonesian textbooks in Senior High School to be used in language learning. This research used qualitative method with framing theory from Pan and Kosicki as an tool of analysis. The research data is journalism discourse in textbook amounted to 30 pieces of discourse taken from 10 text books of class X, XI, and XII in Senior High School. The results show the following: (1) The discourse of journalism has received acceptance in the world of education, especially in textbooks. The use of journalism discourse in 10 textbooks is very high and very diverse in terms of number, topic, source, and usage. (2) The journalism discourse in the textbook meets the criteria of reporting value, even if not all reporting value is fulfilled. (3) The frame construction of the journalism discourse in Indonesian textbooks is packaged in different angles according to news topics and facts. (4) The analysis model of journalism discourse framing �is developed by focusing on the structural analysis of category, syntax, script, thematic, diction/phrase, and rhetoric.Keywords: construction, discourse, framing, journalism�
