Three broad themes reflecting the role of the media in the digital age emerged from the Journalism Downunder journalism education conference in Auckland in December 2006. These were trepidation, confusion and celebration. The sense of trepidation relates to a fear of the unknown and unknowable: a sense that digital technologies are changing at a speed that confounds attempts to master them before they morph into new forms. Another theme was the confusion created by the new digital technologies. This confusion is related to the fetish-isation of gadgets and the growing gap between those who have always interacted with the digital world and those who have had it thrust upon them. The third theme was cautious celebration. The power, speed and usefulness of digital creation, transmission and reception opens up communication and the media to people in previously unimaginable ways. This commentary is an overview of papers presented at the conference, with some general conclusions reached about the future of journalism in the digital age. While the new digital platforms and technologies do present significant challenges to traditional journalism, they are also enabling technologies that offer opportunities to reinvigorate newsgathering. Although the future of journalism is a digital one, the core competencies of a good journalist will be as important as ever.

The school defines a system that is too complex to be reduced to functions and practices. Humanity saw the school as a ‘multi-dimensional structure’ in its development adventure; ıts necessity was generally considered to be ‘vital’. Until the last century, there was hardly any serious criticism that the school was unnecessary. Especially the differences such as the innovations of the new century, the monist perspective, the possibilities of the digital world gave the opportunity to discuss the role of the school and its current role was frequently brought up. Even though the evaluations made over the school with the works of thinkers such as Gatto and Illich have a fair share, it will be seen that these are criticisms developed on the basis of ‘negative examples’. In the digital age where the vehicle is rich and purpose is impoverished, the school must be reconstructed as a challenging metaphor. There is a need for a vision of a school that prioritizes the human with wisdom without blessing the machine. In this context, our study regards the school of the future as the most critical institutional phenomenon for human rejuvenation ‘despite all’. School as a natural system is considered to be the strongest structure to rebuild the future against actual and popular ‘negativities’.

Journalism and journalism education has been through a time of massive change over the past 20 years as the media has got to grips with the technology revolution, learning how to deal with the benefits and problems that the move from analog to digital has brought. Now education needs to look to the future to predict what’s coming and to prepare teachers and students for even more change as the interface between humans and the digital world becomes ever closer. Journalism education also needs to take more seriously the need to not just train journalism students but to give them the tools to deal with a fast-moving world where things can change almost month by month. Students can now expect a career of up to 60 years duration and learning how to predict the future, deal with the latest innovations, manage change and identify what is important and what is merely transitory; a glossy distraction rather than a change in basic truths will be key skills for success. Training simply for today’s world is no longer good enough and lets our students down – students need skills for a future that will be more different than any sci-fi artefact film can imagine.

Currently, one of the trends in the development of countries is the process of digital transformation, which affects all spheres of society. The transformation of countries’ economies is carried out with the help of such technologies as robotics, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and big data groups. The transformation process, being global, gets its specific name in each country. In Russia, this is “digital economy”, which is defined in the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation “On National goals and strategic objectives of the development of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2024” as a strategy for the future development of Russia In Germany, it is “Industry 4.0”, represented by the concept of K. Schwab, in the United States, the concept of transforming society based on digital technologies is called “Industrial Internet Consortium”. In Japan, the Government has developed the “Society 5.0” strategy in conjunction with the Keidanren Association of Japan. The result of the digitalization process will be the creation of a new world based on digital technologies, in which new values and management technologies arise. The purpose of this article is to analyze the digital age as a space for the emergence of digital risks, to identify their impact on modern people. The study uses general philosophical methods that make it possible to describe modern digital civilization. Within the framework of the risk concept, digital risks arising in various spheres of society’s life are described. The positive effects of the development of the digital economy, which forms a new digital world and a new person are highlighted and described. Today, the future of civilization is determined by the development of the digital economy, which determines the basic mechanisms of society’s existence. At the same time, it will be a world filled with various kinds of risks, threats to society, the economy and the individual. The article raises questions related to the impact of the digital economy on a person living in the conditions of the global information space. WELCOME to the first issue of Pacific Journalism Review to be jointly edited by the editors of PJR and Australian Journalism Review. The trigger for this cooperative editorial venture was the major conference held in Auckland in December 2006, involving the Journalism Education Association of New Zealand (JEANZ) and Australia’s Journalism Education Association (JEA). Anyone who has been to New Zealand will appreciate that it is an excellent destination for a conference, and that Auckland is a beautiful part of New Zealand in which to locate it. Titled ‘Journalism Downunder: The future of the media in the digital age’, the conference was hosted (and very well organised) by AUT University in Auckland. It produced a high standard of trans-Tasman discussion and debate, in the process drawing attention to our many areas of common interest and few points of difference.

AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to the maritime supply chain and called for accelerated adoption of digital technologies in various aspects of maritime operations, including the area of maritime education and training (MET). This paper aims to discuss the current maritime simulator-based training and educational practices that forms an integral part in seafarer training and competency development. The study provides a review of the existing simulators in use in MET, and discusses upon the technological and pedagogical advancement of maritime simulator-based training interventions with predictions regarding the future MET practices with use of virtual reality and cloud-based simulators. This study—by focusing on ship’s bridge operations—highlights the characteristics of various types of simulators and also discusses the role of instructors, challenges, and opportunities involving future simulator-based MET due to accelerated adoption of digital technologies and the need to comply with pandemic-related restrictions for MET institutes. The analysis generated in the paper may contribute to the ongoing discussion regarding the future of simulator-based MET and the fulfillment of the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 in the maritime sector.

Media, Information and Development in Papua New Guinea is one of the most interesting books I have on Pacific media. It is a collection of different writers, some of whom are current or former journalists. Several of the authors have direct media links as staff working with the Divine Word University in Madang, a private Christian institution. For the uninitiated, the opening chapter gives an outline of the media landscape in PNG. Other chapters explore media ownership, journalism education and the role of media national development.

Representations of war in the media have changed drastically over time. Like the media representations of war, the American public's view of wars has also shifted over time; this is often a result of the media portrayals of war events. This paper examines the role of newspaper, yellow journalism, and sensationalism writing during the Spanish-American War on the American public's support for the war and juxtaposes this with television media accounts of the American war in Vietnam and how this created public disapproval for the war. Both had everlasting effects on US war policy for the future.

Bioeconomy as one mode of the transition towards a more sustainable mode of production and consumption has been addressed in several policy fields. Bioeconomy has raised hope not only in the quest for a more sustainable future, but also offers new possibilities, especially in countries with vast natural resources. By using the Narrative Policy Framework, I assess the kinds of bioeconomy narratives promoted by the media and the future they suggest, for the case of Finland. Flexible concepts such as bioeconomy can be harnessed to promote different, and even contrasting, objectives. Besides growth-oriented promises, bioeconomy seems to simultaneously raise controversial questions related to techno-social path dependencies and the sustainability of natural resource use. The narratives seem also to lack roles for certain actor groups, such as citizens, which might challenge the legitimacy and, thus, the future of bioeconomy. The role of civil society should also be better addressed by scholars in the field, as it plays an important role in the sustainability of bioeconomy.

The composition and role of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) has been the subject ofacrimonious debate through the media in recent months, with accusations of government subjugation to strongindustry lobby groups at the future expense of the Australian taxpayer. An understanding of the issues at thismore political level is helped by appreciation of the rationale for the current process of listing drugs forreimbursement on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). I will try to give the non-economist reader anoverview of the system and share some perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses of what is fundamentally agood system.
