The article deals with the active development of polysemy that characterizes the integration of the neologisms of the English language origin into Russian. Their new meanings are usually the result of the semantic shift based on metaphor or metonymy along with the appearance of secondary borrowings. The research has been based on a corpus of modern mass media texts in the Russian language as well as on the analysis of the most recent lexicographic sources. The paper describes the peculiarities of semantic development of the newest anglicisms quoting numerous examples of neosemy many of which have not yet been registered in dictionaries.

The main purpose of the article was to study the representation of the concept 'thief' in the language of Russian mass media. This concept is important for both national and scientific legal concept spheres. The appeal to journalistic texts is due to the fact that they quickly reflect the main characteristics of the current state of mass consciousness and manifest its key stereotypes. The analysis was carried out in accordance with the main task of the study: to identify the key features of the concept represented in the media. In the course of the study, information from the newspaper subcorpus of the National corpus of the Russian language was used in order to collect and analyze empirical data. Semantic analysis of the contexts containing the key word of the concept revealed basic characteristics of the concept prevailing in the mass national consciousness. The authors conclude that the romantic and heroic image of the thief, which has deep folklore and literary roots, continues to exist as one of the prevalent characteristics of this concept in modern public consciousness. This image of the thief is largely formed by modern mass cinema, literature and music which are discussed in the media. The image of the so called «thief in law», often mentioned in the analyzed material, also partly contributes to the strengthening of the romantic features of this concept, since it implies following some alternative principles of morality and honor. At the same time, the research has shown that this concept receives an ambiguous evaluation in the Russian society, since the idea of criminality of this phenomenon is clearly expressed in many of the contexts under study.

The article analyzes the most commonly used foreign-language lexical items in the language of modern Ukrainian mass media. The object of the article is to study the thematic direction of foreign-language lexical items, to determine their stylistic role, as well as to indicate the instability of spelling of certain borrowings. The descriptive method and method of observation are used as main in scientific research for the study of lexical items in the language of Ukrainian periodicals of the beginning of the XXI century. At different stages of the research, the method of functional analysis was used to determine the stylistic load of lexical items. Foreign-language words are an integral part of Ukrainian vocabulary, due to some extralinguistic factors, such as Ukraine’s course towards European integration, the process of globalization, restructuring of the economy, orientation towards the countries of the West, that have caused a close cultural, political, and social and economic cooperation of the Ukrainians with other nations. As the language of modern mass media shows, borrowings get into various scopes of society: economic, social and political, scientific, cultural, educational, communication, everyday life etc. Due to the active borrowing of foreign-language lexical items, we can have a threatening linguistic situation: functioning of doublets in the language, increasing the number of unwanted homonyms, borrowing of proper names without translation, borrowing of words that aim at imitating something different. Often borrowings in the Ukrainian language have different spelling, which proves the instability of spelling and which requires further scientific researches.

The author proposes a new approach to studying regionology, an actively emerging area of research that examines laws of functioning of a region in terms of geographical, geopolitical, geo-economic, information and historical-cultural factors. This approach lies in coordinating the theory of regionality with real facts of a certain territory media history in its dynamic characteristics displayed in media texts. The author points out that active forming of the Crimean identity is a result of the ideas of the Russian world as a uniting factor. The identity features of those who live in the peninsula manifest themselves by the formula “We are Crimean” regardless of a person’s nationality. The identity features of the Crimean people are also determined by the role of the Russian language as an integrative field of communication for the living together representatives of different cultures. Regional mass media have a significant impact on shaping a regional worldview. Applying discourse analysis to the Crimean printed texts the author demonstrates peculiarities of media constructing of the Crimean identity involving geographical, historical, cultural and personal themes. The analysis carried out allows one to conclude that the Crimean (regional) identity corresponds to the professional identity of the journalists who work in the region. This is confirmed by the main regional themes being broadcast by the most popular regional mass media. The Crimean society is a specific regional polyethnic environment formed as the result of long-term and complex cultural and historical development. Characteristics of the key events representation in public space determine their collective comprehension. The regional mass media of the Republic of Crimea through the media texts draw the audience’s attention primarily to the attributes of the unified mentality. It is important that now when several years have passed after the Crimea joined Russia it is the time to interpret this historical event to build a complex hierarchically ordered system of the peninsula citizens’ self-identity.
