Background: Herbal antioxidants have beneficial effects on health and performance. Meanwhile, medicinal plants and their derivations are utilized as growth and immunity promoter. Objectives: This research aimed to evaluate the effects of garlic powder and Satureja Khuzestanica essential oil (SKEO) on broiler performance, blood lipid profile, immune responses, intestinal microflora, and morphology. Methods: In total, 400 male chickens were randomly divided into five groups. Treatments included garlic powder (2 and 4%) and SKEO (400 and 500 mg/kg). Those in the control group received no intervention. On the 35th day of the experiment, the immune system of subjects was investigated, and at the end of the study, performance and blood lipid profile were analyzed. Also, the jejunal and ileal contents were separated to investigate the intestinal morphology and microflora. Results: Administration of herbal extracts was associated with improved performance, such as feed intake, BWG, and FCR (P < 0.05). Treatments could diminish the serum concentrations of lipid profile, including cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the number of harmful intestinal bacteria was reduced by garlic (4% of diet) and SKEO (500 mg/kg) treatments (P < 0.05). Also, morphological characteristics of the intestine were improved (P < 0.05). Herbal plant supplement remarkably increased the villus length, villus length to crypt depth, and villus area (P < 0.05), but did not affect the immune responses (P > 0.05). Conclusions: This study demonstrated that dietary inclusion of herbal extracts is potentially an effective strategy for improving health and performance in broiler chickens.

The aim of this research was to examine the impact of nano encapsulation of Melastoma malabathricum L. fruit extract as feed additive that was given through drinking water towards lipid profile of broiler chicken. Experimental design used in this research was completely randomized design using six increment treatments of Melastoma malabathricum L. fruit extract to the drinking water of the chicken each with five repetitions. Detail of treatment rations were as follow: T0 drinking water treatment without feed additive (negative control), T1 drinking water treatment + 0.2 mg/kg body weight simvastatin (positive control), T2 drinking water treatment + 1.5% Melastoma malabathricum L. fruit extract, T3 drinking water treatment + 3.0% Melastoma malabathricum L. fruit extract, T4 drinking water treatment + 1.5% nano encapsulation of Melastoma malabathricum L. fruit extract, T5 drinking water treatment + 3.0% nano encapsulation of Melastoma malabathricum L. fruit extract. Observed Parameters were the blood lipid profile, cholesterol of meat and crude fat of meat. The results showed that adding the nano encapsulation of Melastoma malabathricum L. fruit extract did not give significant effect (P>0.05) on blood lipid profile and crude fat of the thigh and breast of the broilers. Addition of nano encapsulation of Melastoma malabathricum L. fruit extract gives real impact (P<0.05) toward reduction of broiler’s meat cholesterol. The conclusion of this research is that giving nano encapsulation of Melastoma malabathricum L. fruit extract is able to improve lipid profile of broiler, which is in the amount of meat’s cholesterol.

Background: As like hypertension, hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and hypertension and its complications are one of the highest causes of death in the world.Aims: This study aims to determine the potential of garlic essence (Allium sativum) mixed with honey in changing blood pressure and lipid profile of blood in the hypertension patients with hypercholesterolemia, and to compare the effectiveness with those who received Simvastatin, the most preferred pharmacological treatment of hyperlipidemia. Methods: This research is a quasy experiment study with a Nonequivalent control group design. There were 22 hypercholesterolemia outpatients purposively selected from local health centers. The respondents were then divided equally to (a) a control group where the patients were provided with generic Simvastatin 10 mg single dose taken once in the afternoon, and (b) an intervention group where the respondents received a non-pharmacological supplement of garlic essence in 2 grams honey. The blood pressure and the blood lipid profile were examined before (Pretest) and at the Day 22 after the treatment (Posttest). The collected data was then analyzed using a T-test to define the significant mean difference between two groups, and a Cohen’s effect was measured to interpret the size of changes. Results: Either the additions of Simvastatin or the provision of garlic essence mixed with honey decreased the blood pressure (systole and diastole) and the cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL cholesterol, but increased the HDL cholesterol. While significant difference was observed for all parameters at the intervention group, the improvement at the control group for triglyceride was not significant (p value = 0.041). Overall, by the Cohen's effect size effect, we can interpret that the changes was moderate for diastole and systole blood pressure, and also triglyceride and DLD-cholesterol; however the effect size was low for Cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol. Conclusion: The findings show the importance of the garlic essence mixed with honey to be offered as a nutritional supplement for hypertensive patients with hypercholesterolemia.  Keywords: Garlic (Allium sativum) essence, Simvastatin, Hypertension, Hypercholesterolemia, Blood pressure, Blood lipid profile.

This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effects of co-treatment with purified annatto oil (PAO) or its granules (GRA, Chronic®) with that of testosterone on the orchiectomy-induced osteoporosis in Wistar rats. After surgery, rats were treated from day 7 until day 45 with testosterone only (TES, 7 mg/kg, IM) or TES + PAO or GRA (200 mg/kg, p.o.). The following parameters were evaluated: food/water intake, weight, HDL, LDL, glucose, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), alkaline phosphatase levels, blood phosphorus and calcium contents, femur weight, structure (through scanning electron microscopy), and calcium content (through atomic absorption spectrophotometry). Our results show that orchiectomy could significantly change the blood lipid profile and decrease bone integrity parameters. Testosterone reposition alone could improve some endpoints, including LDL, TC, bone weight, and bone calcium concentration. However, other parameters were not significantly improved. Co-treatment with PAO or GRA improved the blood lipid profile and bone integrity more significantly and improved some endpoints not affected by testosterone reposition alone (such as TG levels and trabeculae sizes). The results suggest that co-treatment with annatto products improved the blood lipid profile and the anti-osteoporosis effects of testosterone. Overall, GRA had better results than PAO.
