Continuous chemotherapy treatment in children with cancer, besides giving therapeutic effect, it also causes various side effects. These side effects could have negative effect for quality of life of the children, including physical, emotional, social, psychological, school, and cognitive functions. The aim of this study was to identify quality of life of children living with cancer. This study used mixed method design with sequential explanatory strategy. The quantitative study recruited 60 samples of children living with cancer. The quality of life of the children was measured using PedsQol Generic 4.0 and PedsQoL Cancer Module 3.0. Data were analyzed using mean score. The qualitative study recruited 10 participants and the data were collected using semi-structured interview. Qualitative data analysis used interactive analysis model which consisted data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion phases. Both of the studies were conducted at Dr. Hasan Sadikin Hospital Bandung. The results showed that based on PedsQol Generic 4.0, most of the children (53.3%) has low quality of life, with the school function as the lowest score. Based on PedQoL Cancer Module 3.0, most of children (61.7%) also has low quality of life, particularly in children’s worriedness aspect when dealing with treatment and their illness which has lowest score. This low quality of life would have negative impact towards children’s physical, emotional, social, psychological, school and cognitive function, so that it disturbed the children’s growth and development. One of efforts that can be done is to provide opportunities for children to continue studying and interaction in hospital, as well as an additional schedule for psychology therapies to help children overcome the negative emotion during their treatment. Keywords: Cancer, children, quality of life.

Individuals living with cancer often experience multiple nutrition-related side effects from cancer treatment, including changes in taste and smell, nausea, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and pain during eating. These side effects can profoundly impact nutritional status and quality of life. The purpose of this study was to explore experiences with nutrition-related cancer treatment side effects among cancer patients and their family caregivers, the way they manage such side effects, and the resulting changes in food preferences and behaviors. Structured surveys and in-depth interviews were conducted. Interviews focused on the presence and management of treatment side effects, how those changes influenced food preferences, and the extent to which they interfered with quality of life. Most patients (72%) reported treatment side effects; 61% reported that these side effects impacted their eating and drinking. Common side effects included fatigue (58%), dry mouth (30%), nausea (24%), constipation (20%) and diarrhea (20%). Six overarching qualitative themes were identified: Spiral of side effects; Pain of eating; Burden of eating; Loss of taste/change in taste; Symptom management; and Solutions. The authors conclude with implications for food and nutrition practice—moving beyond traditional recommendations of what to eat or avoid—to consider the overall patient and caregiver experience.

Endometriosis is associated with painful symptoms, infertility, sexological difficulties, and psychological suffering. All these symptoms have a negative impact on the overall quality of life of women with the disease, with significant personal, social and economic costs. Several medical options are available to manage symptomatic endometriosis. The pharmacological treatment for endometriosis-related pain may be necessary for decades, or at least until there is a desire for pregnancy or physiologic menopause occurs. In this perspective, clinicians should consider not only the efficacy, but also side effects, tolerability, and costs, along with women's preferences toward different treatments. In this mini-review, we analyzed the pros and cons of the available drugs for the medical therapy of endometriosis, such as estrogen-progestins, progestins, GnRH agonist and GnRH antagonists.

Overactive bladder affects 12–17% of the population, and mainly women, and its incidence increases with age. Diagnosis of this condition is based mainly on the patients’ complaints. These symptoms significantly affect the quality of life of millions of patients, involving considerable social, psychological, professional, physical and sexual problems. The wide incidence of this condition makes it necessary to find new medical substances in order to effectively eliminate the symptoms. Neurotoxins are a group of medical drugs that hold great promise for the future. Botulinum toxin is currently being used to treat  symptoms related to overactive bladder. It can constitute an appropriate therapeutic option, in  particular with regard to patients for whom the use of standard anti-cholinergic drugs is unsatisfactory or leads to severe side effects. Numerous research studies confirm that botulinum toxin can be  efficiently used in the treatment of overactive bladder. The properties of this neurotoxin allow selective  deactivation of overactive muscles. The use of botulinum toxin can be a method of treatment that significantly improves patient quality of life. Keywords: botulinum toxin; overactive bladder; urinary incontinence; quality of life.

Few side effects of cancer treatment are more fearsome for patients than nausea and vomiting. Although both can result from surgery or radiation therapy, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) are potentially the most severe and the most distressing ones. Despite recent advances in the prevention of emesis induced by chemotherapy, its control remains to be insufficient in 20-25%.1s of patients, with the ensuing negative impact on their quality of life. In this small review, we intend to analyze some critical aspects related to the approach of antiemetic therapy in the clinical practice in haematological patients.

Several studies have shown that ADHD has a significant negative impact on multiple domains of quality of life of children and adolescents, particularly in terms of behavioral, emotional and psychosocial quality of life. The psychopedagogical intervention can be therapeutic, preventive and promote educational inclusion. Moreover, it aims to address the learning process, how it is developed and how the individual relates himself to learning, both in the cognitive, social and emotional domains. Our purpose was to understand whether the psychopedagogical intervention influences the quality of life of adolescents with ADHD considering their pharmacological plans. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a psychopedagogical intervention on quality of life of a sample of adolescents with ADHD taking into account their pharmacological plans (rubifen, ritalin, and concerta). We used quantitative and qualitative assessment measures: the KIDSCREEN-10, to measure the quality of life of these adolescents, and a semi-structured interview to assess the impact of a psychopedagogical intervention in the lives of these adolescents and their parents, respectively. The results showed that psychopedagogical intervention has a positive impact on the quality of life of adolescents with ADHD, as well as in the family dynamics. Due to the demands of school work (homework) and their negative impact on the family dynamics and consequently in the quality of life, the results corroborate the relevance of a psychopedagogical intervention to improve these areas. Thus, it appears that this type of intervention is very useful for adolescents with ADHD.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract Objective The objective of this study was to i) address the impact repetitive blast exposure (RBE) has on recovery from TBI in service members and veterans (SMVs), ii) determine if the relative amount of blast exposure in a career changes this effect, iii) determine if any effects of blast exposure are different than known pre-existing neurotrauma such as pre-injury TBI history (piTBIHx) defined as previous TBI that occurred before the index injury for the study. Methods 341 SMVs with an uncomplicated mild, complicated mild, moderate, or severe TBI. piTBIHx was based on a structured interview and RBE was based on self-report. Participants were divided into six cohorts based on RBE and piTBIHx and given the TBI-Quality of Life (TBI-QOL). Four multivariate analysis of variance were completed for each domain separately (Emotional, Physical, Cognition, and Positive) to correct for multiple comparisons. Results Results indicate that HeavyRBE, in the absence of piTBIHx, was associated with worse QOL on measures of Anger (p = 0.032), Anxiety (p = 0.008), Explosive Behavior (p = 0.038), Headache (p = 0.030), Pain (p = 0.016), Cognitive Complaints-Executive Functioning (p = 0.009), and Cognitive Complaints-General (p = 0.013). ModerateRBE in the absence of piTBIHx was associated with more Cognitive Complaints-Executive Function (p = 0.005). ModerateRBE did not differ from the Heavy RBE group regardless of piTBIHx. Conclusion QOL after a TBI may be negatively impacted by a history of RBE. A lifetime of HeavyRBE was associated with worse QOL on numerous measures, however, Moderate RBE was only associated with worse cognitive complaints related to executive functioning.

Background Pain is a frequent and disabling symptom in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. In this study we assess the frequency and intensity of pain, as well as its impact on the quality of life and activities of daily living, in a sample of MS patients. Methods One hundred and twenty eight MS patients underwent a neurological examination, a structured interview designed to assess pain, and a Medical Outcome 36-item Short Form Health Survey. Functional status was assessed by means of the Barthel Index (BI) and Rivermead Mobility Index. We also assessed the presence of depression, by means of the Montgomery and Asberg Depression Rating Scale, and fatigue, by means of the Fatigue Severity Scale. An algometer was used to measure thermal and discomfort thresholds in all of the patients and a group of 61 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. Results Pain was present in 61 patients. No differences were found between patients with and those without pain in disease duration, disease form or Expanded Disability Status Scale and its functional systems. Patients with pain had a lower vitality score ( p = 0.008), mental health score ( p = 0.03) and physical ( p < 0.001) and mental composite scores ( p = 0.01) than patients without pain. Furthermore, there was a significant difference between patients with and those without pain in the BI ( p = 0.04). Both thermal and discomfort thresholds, as assessed by means of the algometer, were statistically lower in MS patients than in controls, whereas no difference was observed between patients with and those without pain. There was a statistically significant improvement in the thermal threshold in patients with pain who were treated pharmacologically when compared with those who were not treated ( p = 0.049). Conclusion The results of this study provide further evidence of the negative impact that the presence of pain has on both the quality of life and activities of daily living in MS patients. The lower thermal and discomfort thresholds observed in our MS patients, compared with controls, may represent a predisposition to develop pain during the course of the disease.

Purpose: Trastuzumab, a humanized anti-human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (anti-HER2) antibody delivered intravenously, has revolutionized the treatment of patients with breast cancer overexpressing HER2 protein. Recently, a newer subcutaneous formulation was shown to have comparable efficacy to the initial intravenous trastuzumab. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the impact of subcutaneous trastuzumab on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients diagnosed with early or metastatic HER2-overexpressing breast cancer. Methods: Patients were provided with the EORTC QLQ-C30 (European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 30) and the BR-23 questionnaires. The scoring of questionnaires and patient’s sociodemographic and clinicopathologic characteristics were recorded and analyzed by descriptive and correlation statistics employing t test and 2-way analysis of variance. Results: A total of 163 patients agreed to participate in the study. About 90 of 163 patients (55.21%) received subcutaneous trastuzumab and 21 patients intravenous trastuzumab (12.88%). A control group of 52 HER2+ patients received chemotherapy without trastuzumab (31.90%). Patients receiving subcutaneous trastuzumab were older and of more advanced disease stage compared with those receiving chemotherapy (58.5 vs 51 years, 39.8% vs 28.8% advanced disease). In univariate analysis, subcutaneous trastuzumab was associated with less nausea and vomiting ( P = .002) but worse cognitive function ( P = .013) and dyspnea ( P = .042). Patients who have received >8 cycles of subcutaneous trastuzumab reported less diarrhea ( P = .049) and systemic therapy side effects ( P = .015). Multivariate analysis showed that patients without comorbidity receiving subcutaneous trastuzumab had less treatment side effects, less upset by hair loss, and higher emotional functioning. Of note, mastectomy and subcutaneous trastuzumab were associated with improved role functioning ( P = .021). In metastatic disease, no negative impact of subcutaneous trastuzumab on HRQoL was found. Conclusions: The administration of subcutaneous trastuzumab improved certain symptoms and did not adversely affect most of the assessed functional scales. Particularly, in the metastatic setting, subcutaneous trastuzumab had no negative impact on HRQoL.
