The article discusses the specifics of the interaction of psychoanalysis and literary studies. It is proved that literary studies actively use fundamental psychoanalytic methods and techniques in decoding the mental unconscious of characters in literary works. Literary terms proposed for implementation and use – a literary work of psychoanalytic direction, a literary work with psychoanalysis elements, a literary work with thepsychoanalytic dominant orpsychoanalytic constructs certifying the integration of psychoanalysis theory into literary studies. The use of certain aspects of psychoanalytic theory contributes to the literary interpretation of unconscious processes in the psyche of the author of the work and its characters, marked by various pathologies, deviations, neuroses, fears, etc. The article emphasizes that interpreting literary texts in the psychoanalytic aspect actualizes the method of free associations, close to the specific literary technique of the consciousness stream, as well as the specifics of interpretations of the dreaming discourse.

Defining the functional nature of English anthroponyms in literary texts for children is complicated philological problems as these language elements perform an essential role in creating the system of images of any literary work. The complex study of anthroponyms functioning in literary texts for children is rather important because it meets the requirements of a new scientific paradigm of literary onomastics. The purpose of the research is to describe a scientific assumption of the phenomenon of literary anthroponymy in general, and that of proper names and literary anthroponyms in particular, and describe their functional peculiarities in literary texts for children. Special attention is paid to anthroponyms and their stylistic expressive abilities, which originate from the time when ancient philosophers regarded proper names in terms of their semantics and purpose of use only. The rapid development of literary onomastics makes it possible to point out different kinds of onyms, anthroponyms, toponyms, and the names of characters in fiction. The key feature of literary anthponyms is their distinguishing stylistic possibilities. It is proved that the functional nature of anthroponyms lies in the fact that they operate in literary texts as vivid markers of the author’s intention, implementing definite ideological, esthetic, and cultural tasks. In a word, they update stylistic features (informative and emotive) at the textual level. Consequently, the wide use of stylistic expressive properties of anthroponyms in literary works led to the need to conceptualize their functional nature in literary texts for children.

Abstract This paper tackles repetition in literary texts from a semantic, generic, and translatological perspective. It deals with repetition in Arabic texts as well as in Modern English poetry, and explains the problems that are likely to arise in translating repeated elements in English literary texts into Arabic. The theoretical framework rests on the supposition that a literary work in general, and poetry in particular must be examined as a total meaningful structure which entails the semantics and pragmatics of the text. In other words, repetition is a stylistic feature that involves a non-ordinary use of language, which does significantly shift the information content of the text. In translating literary works harbouring repetition from English into Arabic, significant problems usually emerge since what is considered stylistically and/or semantically marked in English might not be seen or conceived as such in Arabic. So, a translated text may miss important meaning elements intended by the English author. The effect is that the mental representation and understanding of the poem are drastically distorted. Moreover, this case applies to Arabic as well, for what is semantically and/or stylistically marked in Arabic repeated elements may lose its markedness in the English translation. The paper at hand addresses these issues providing several examples and suggesting some solutions.

This essay wishes to engage with the crucial issue of the interpretation of literary texts from the specific perspective of the rise of Cognitive Sciences in the past two or three decades. One of the stimulating, but also controversial elements of Cognitive Literary Studies is the variety of denominations of the field itself. Different labels have been adopted to define it, including: “Cognitive Poetics”, “Cognitive Semiotics”, “Cognitive Stylistics”, “Cognitive Literary Studies”, “Cognitive Criticism”, and “Cognitive Literary Science”. A crucial problem that has variously been dealt with but that still remains open to discussion (and has sometimes promoted a questioning of the usefulness of the neurosciences in the interpretation of literary works), is the problem of the affordances of a cognitive approach to the specificity of literary artifacts. This contribution will therefore address and investigate this timely topic and illustrate aspects of the dynamics of literary interpretation that the cognitive sciences have recently productively developed. In particular, it will focus on the following elements: various perspectives in “the neurohumanities”, “literariness and the brain”, “the respective contribution of the cognitive sciences and of literature to the knowledge of the human mind”.

From the perspective of formalism theory, this study aims to reveal that a research on literary texts does not only pay attention to textual facts existing in literary works, but also needs to pay attention to what exists outside the text. In the literary works, the element of defamiliarization holds that literary language is able to express facts of stories using unfamiliar languages. From the perspective of structuralism theory, this study aims to reveal that structuralism is conceptually a continuation of formalism which largely depends on language. Structuralism theory has a close relationship with linguistics, especially in analyzing the functions of the language used. The analysis of language function can help understanding language semiotics that views literature as a sign that then led to literary semiotics. Therefore, functioning to examine a phenomenon, the concept of semiotic structuralism emerged as a social fact.  Critical approach was deemed suitable to be used in this study because formalism theory and structuralism theory are part of a social construction and part of a discursive formation in the formation of subject and reality. As a result, it could be seen the position of formalism theory and structuralism theory in literary research of which raw material is language. The findings in this study are that the formalism theory in its development is dynamic and its language construction stimulates readers to respond. In principle, literary work is not autonomous because it contains author’s feelings and society’s mind. Literary research should exceed the boundaries of formalism and be able to create new vocabularies in writing novels. In the novel, there is intertextual polyvalence, which is a series and intensive dialogic linkages that are capable of giving birth to new novels. Another finding is that structuralism theory has a close relationship with linguistics, for example phonological elements in linguistics which can help literary theory in analyzing sound levels in oral literary works. This theory has also developed a study of poetry to the aesthetic level so that this study has shifted from its original aspects of verbal art only to all art and artistic aesthetics in the present time. This shift distinguishes the views between formalism and structuralism in relation to norms and values inherent in language.

Inspired by Wittgenstein, this article starts with a suggestion that we need to discuss the question of method in literary studies on the basis of a differentiation between different research acts. It argues that a methodical procedure for the interpretation of literary texts is best understood as a response to ethical demands on the reader. Building on Iris Murdoch’s notion of attention, and to a notion of pitfall-awareness that emerges from Stanley Cavell’s reading of Wittgenstein, the article suggests some principles on which such a methodical procedure might be based, and argues for the importance of such an approach as a way of strengthening scholarly literary interpretation as an open and communal field of activity, in which not only the resulting interpretations but also the procedure itself invites and even requires the critical scrutiny of peers.

Abstract Quantifying style, or stylometry, has always been one of the oldest traditions in Western literary studies. It seems, however, that such a well-explored and long-standing scientific methodology has been rarely applied to translations, as opposed to original literary texts. The present paper, which focuses on the stylistic use of phraseology in two contemporary Chinese versions of Cervantes’ Don Quijote, shall endeavour to address the two current problems in corpus-based translation stylistics, i.e., the lack of debate on the question of semantically-rich linguistic units in quantifying style of translations, and the need for testing the use of methods and techniques adapted from corpus statistics in detecting stylistic traits in translations. It is hoped that this study, which aims at expanding the current methodological framework for translation stylistics, will help in the development of this growing area of research in Translation Studies.
