In Iraq, the construction industry is considered one of the main sectors that contribute strongly to the Iraqi economy. Documentation is a process of collecting documents from past and current works of corporations, then archiving and classification of information to become easy and useful for reuse in the future. The aim of this study is to investigate the reality of documentation in the Iraqi construction industry and how to improve archiving and classification of documents and how documentation can be useful used in contractor and consultant corporations. This research has been conducted through literature reviews followed by a field survey. 80 questionnaires were distributed to contractors and engineering offices. 70 useful questionnaires were received from respondents with an 87% response rate. The findings indicated that the construction projects in the Diyala governorate are applying documentation. The study found that foundations classified and updating the documents as printed and written files and computer files, but foundations lack computer programs and web models for easy archiving and discovery of documents, documentation system currently used doesn't prevent Confusing, conflict in schemas because they still used Auto CAD and paper documentation.  The large number and accumulation of paper documents are also considered the most often problem in the documentation system currently used, and construction projects don't have a database for all information related to projects where, it is limited to cabinets full of paper documents, which causes a waste of time and effort when searching for any document or information related to the projects. The study recommended that companies and foundations have to increase cost and effort consumed in the documentation process, improve the owner and staff abilities in computer and web applications, assign a key person for collection and archiving project documents, establishing an internet website for companies, or using cloud applications for storage of documents and sharing information.

Background: Claims have increasingly become inevitable in construction projects. A great amount of money, time, and merit of claims are the most critical factors that prudent companies should not overlook. Objective: The objective of the study is to survey claim practices in the Vietnamese construction industry by collecting data from both contractors and consultants. Material and Methods: This paper presents findings that the lack of awareness of the on-site people is the major problem of claims management. Moreover, the inadequacy of supporting evidence, originating from the unawareness of personnel as well as improper documentation system, is also a serious problem causing the loss of chances to recover incurred damages. Conclusion: To overcome these problems, it is recommended that the management should pay more attention to these aspects in order to have effective claim management, by which unnecessary losses could substantially be reduced and deserving compensation would be recovered.

The increasing complexity of construction projects has inevitably led to site managers are facing ever more complex claims. As a result, they are increasingly occupied with claim management. Their primary task, however, is to carry out the project and claim management is considered a secondary task. Furthermore, site managers often lack both the know-how and the resources required for handling complex claims. Attaining a successful outcome for a claim, demands stringent causal evidence for each single event linked to its effects. This makes documentation and quantification of a complex claim exceptionally difficult. Site managers tend to underestimate the complexity of a claim-causing event and as a consequence may often be too late in notifying internal company experts or external consultants focusing on claim management. This paper aims to categorize deviations causing a claim according to its complexity at the time of its occurrence. To do so, a quantitative survey was handed out to site managers in the Austrian construction industry. Based on the findings, the authors designed a decision-making matrix to classify claim-causing events according to their complexity. This will allow site managers to take necessary measures processing a claim and mitigate possible disputes.

The construction industry in Nigeria faces many problems, including the delay due to variations in project execution. This delay has been studied as a major setback in the Nigerian construction industry. In Nigeria, the construction industry's performance in terms of time has been observed to be poor. The objective of this study is to examine the variation of the construction project in order to determine the effect on the delivery of the project. The maximum performance of the project would be reached if the work always goes efficiently on time with the budget. The result of the variation is delay, cost overruns, quality defects and other negative impacts. The causes of variation were identified by a questionnaire survey for two higher education institutions. The results of the study identified the five main factors, including change of plan or scope, defective labour, customers' financial problems, unavailability of skills and desired profitability of the entrepreneur. In general, the study shows agreement among clients, consultants and contractors regarding the classification of the 20 factors that cause the variation. The results also reveal that factors related to clients are the main causes of variation, followed by factors related to contractors. An understanding of the causes and effects of the variation would be helpful in training professionals to assess the variation. In addition, the study would also help professionals take proactive measures to reduce the gaps on construction projects.

Defects can have a significant impact on construction performance. Numerous studies have attempted to identify their root causes, contending that the prevention of defects could be achieved by eliminating the root causes. Yet, their direct causes also need to be considered in order to identify the sequence of events leading to defects. This study aims to classify the defective acts that are directly linked to the occurrence of a defect, in order to provide insights about the nature and the impact of different types of direct causes. The study involves investigation into 272 defects from 81 disputes that occurred in the Dubai residential construction industry in 2009. Results from this study reveal that the majority of construction defects are driven by a violation of practices or workers’ lack of skill and competence. While it is difficult to prevent deliberate violations, increased effort toward growing skills and competencies would be effective in reducing defects, and therefore improving construction performance. Also, classification of defective acts is envisioned as a platform toward a more thorough causal tracking of construction defects, facilitating the identification of latent conditions resulting in defects.


Construction industry is the main sector in boosting Malaysian economy, in accordance with the vision of 2020 in making Malaysia as a developed industrial nation that is vastly moving and competitive. In accordance with this Vision 2020, a new form of contsruction method coined as Industrialised Building System or IBS has been the push factor by the Malaysian government in improving production and work quality adopting industrialised construction, prefabrication of components, and the use of mechanisation into the construction sector. However, there are still incumbent issues arising within this sector whereby the designing phase, the construction coordination phase as well as the groupwork integration phase are fragmanted from each other. Due to this fragmentation, there is limited form of communication or communication breakdown happens during the IBS construction among the concerned parties. Therefore, this study was carried out to identify the issue of communication breakdown during the construction phase while recognising Islamic work ethics in addressing this issue. This methodology applied in this study was Islamic qualitative approach. At the same time, this study also applied semi-structured interview as an instrument in collecting data from IBS experts apart from the reference from existing available literature reviews. Results obtained from this study shows that there are four Islamic elements of principles that are addressed as main criterion in addressing such issues which are; Good Deeds (Amal Saleh); Righteousness (Birr); Piety or Fear of God (Taqwa) and; Accountability.

The fourth industrial revolution, called Industry 4.0, is transforming decision-making through the increasing use of information and digitization technologies. While Industry 4.0 is expanding rapidly in manufacturing industries, its induced transformations are gradually affecting other sectors, including the construction industry. In recent years, the use of 4.0 technologies in the construction industry, termed as ‘Construction 4.0’, has increased, mostly due to the immense potential of Industry 4.0 for improving the performance of construction projects and structuring their underlying management processes. This paper proposes a classification of existing literature on applications of Construction 4.0 technologies to allow for a better analysis of trends and gaps in the research. A total of nearly 200 research papers between 2009 and 2020 were reviewed and analyzed. Overall, the analysis shows that research on Construction 4.0 is closely aligned with the construction phase. Also, the most researched topics seem to be related to the management processes of quality, risk, and health and safety.

Nowadays, the assessment of the risk level of a construction project is especially important for the quality of construction projects as well as the growth of enterprises and the sector. To establish the most important criteria for the successful growth of the construction sector including value creation and protection aspects are developed.

In the current competitive and complex business environment, innovation in the construction industry is vital. In this sense, integrated project delivery is an emerging delivery system for construction projects; however, implementing this system requires some enablers to enhance its implementation. Until now, no study has been conducted to identify what enablers can lead to proper integrated project delivery implementation. Therefore, this study aims to identify and to classify integrated project delivery implementation enablers. In this study, a comprehensive list of integrated project delivery implementation enablers has been developed using an in-depth literature review. Besides, integrated project delivery project managers, employers, consultants, contractors and engineers participated in a survey. The obtained results were analysed using exploratory factor analysis method. Thus, the study findings illustrated that organisational enablers are considered essential enablers, followed by environmental, contractual and technical enablers. The significance of this research is the identification and classification of integrated project delivery implementation enablers, which will provide valuable information to develop integrated project delivery implementation strategies. Additionally, the results of this study can be a proper roadmap to support developing countries to adopt the integrated project delivery approach for project developments.

UAE construction industry frequently faces poor cost performance which commonly known as cost overrun problem. This problem is resulted from several factors and it is important to identify these cost overrun factors in order to avoid and minimize it. Hence, this paper focused on determined the relevancy of factors affecting cost performance in construction projects of UAE. Through a review of past research works conducted globally, 27 factors of cost overrun were listed and used for developing a structured questionnaire. A survey was conducted with 33 practitioners from client, consultant and contractors organizations involved in handling construction projects in UAE. The respondents were requested to state their perception regarding the relevancy of each of the factors that was perceived in context with cost overrun issue using 5-points Likert scale. The responses were analysed using average index method and the results found that all the 27 factors are relevant with construction industry of UAE in causing cost overrun. These factors can be used for further investigation to uncover critical problems of cost overrun.

     Suicide attacks, bombings, explosions became the part of daily life in Iraq. Consequently, the threat of terrorism put the Iraqi construction sector in the face of unique and unusual challenges that not seen on other countries. These challenges can have extensive impact on construction projects. This paper seeks to examine the impact of the terrorist attacks on construction industry and determine the extent to which the impact of terrorism on construction projects in terms of cost, schedule, and quality. This study adapted quantitative and qualitative approaches to collect data using questionnaire survey and interviews, as well as historical data. The study focused on projects that have been the target of terrorist strikes in Diyala governorate. A variety of statistical procedures were employed in data analysis. The results revealed the extent to which terrorist attacks impact construction projects in terms of cost, time, and quality. The results of this study will enhance the awareness of all construction parties to the impact of the terrorist attacks against construction projects. Eventually, this can develop a risk management assessment and assist contractors to properly protect projects and buildings to minimize injuries and fatalities in the event of terrorism.
