For the first time a parasitic relationship between a water mite larva and a Cladocera is found and documented by scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging. A Unionicolidae larva (cf. Unionicola) has been found attached to a Bosmina tubicen (Cladocera) collected in a karst sinkhole (cenote) in the southeast of the Yucatán Peninsula (México).

Currently, due to the intensive development of high-tech science-intensive medical and research devices, more and more attention is paid to the development of diagnostics of rare and difficult to diagnose diseases. It is known that among numerous nephropathies, hematuria may be the only symptom of kidney and urinary tract diseases, which complicates their diagnosis and treatment. In order to develop new approaches for the diagnosis of nephropathies, the authors have been studying the morphology of red blood cells in the blood and urine of children and adults using a scanning electron microscope for several years. The paper presents the results of studies of children with various kidney diseases, including IgA-nephropathy, and chronic glomerulonephritis. Scanning electron microscopy was used for the first time to detect nanoparticles on the surface of red blood cells, the size of which is comparable to the size of viruses, which became the basis for one of the authors ' assumptions, namely, the possible transport of certain types of viruses by red blood cells. Thus, some kidney diseases could be considered virus-associated. This paper presents for the first time the results of determining the glomerular filtration rate of both kidneys separately in the study of separate kidney function and of the study of urine smears obtained during catheterization of the ureters in patients with hydronephrosis of one of the kidneys by scanning electron microscopy. As in previous studies, nanoparticles were found on the surface of red blood cells, which leads to the conclusion about the possible viral nature of the disease of the considered patient. In addition, smear images obtained using a microscope showed a significant difference in the elements of the right and left kidneys urine, which did not contradict the data on the study of glomerular filtration rate. According to the authors, the capabilities of the scanning electron microscope can be applied in fundamental research of kidney diseases at the cellular and molecular levels, forming new ideas about their origin, as well as on the basis of which new methods of non-invasive diagnostics can be built.

AbstractA snow crystal has been successfully collected on to a scanning electron microscope (SEM) stub in central Greenland. It was preserved at liquid-nitrogen temperature for 5 months, prior to examination in the SEM. This is believed to be the first time a snow crystal has been observed directly in the SEM and offers some new experimental methods for understanding crystals and their chemistry.

X-ray mapping is one of the most popular modes for displaying information obtained with x-ray spectrometry performed in the scanning electron microscope. This popularity arises from the ready accessibility and apparent simplicity of information presented in a pictorial fashion, especially when used in conjunction with other SEM imaging modes, such as backscattered, secondary, and specimen current electron images. Further, the rise of powerful, inexpensive computer systems capable of image processing and display has given the analyst a dedicated, on-line tool with the capacity and flexibility needed for problem solving. Figure 1 shows a typical example of mapping. Although the interpretation of x-ray images obtained with a modern digital control and recording system would seem to be straightforward and relatively trivial, there are significant pitfalls and limitations that can easily fool the unwary. In Figure 1, within an individual x-ray map, the observer can reasonably judge where the concentration is lower or higher, at least for a group of contiguous pixels. Can such judgments be made among a set of maps of the same region for different elements, or even for the same element from different regions of the same specimen? With current x-ray processing and display systems, the answers are generally no. In fact, problems that can influence interpretation can arise at each stage of x-ray generation/emission, x-ray spectral collection, processing, and display.

The detailed description of rarely recorded Thalassiosira species in Brazil is presented with light microscope (LM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) illustrations. A total of 78 phytoplankton net samples (20 µm) collected between the years 2000 and 2006 in coastal waters of southern Brazilian, Cassino Beach and the estuary of Lagoa dos Patos, were studied in cleaned material using the Axiovert Zeiss LM and Jeol 6060 SEM. Water temperature and salinity of samples and six species are presented: Thalassiosira endoseriata, T. hendeyi, T. lundiana, T. minuscula, T. oceanica and T. wongii. Two species, Thalassiosira hendeyi and T. endoseriata were the most common being observed in all seasons at Cassino Beach in a wide temperature range (10-26 ºC), while only sporadically in the estuary of Lagoa dos Patos. Thalassiosira endoseriata, T. lundiana, T. oceanica and T. wongii are for the first time reported in Brazilian coastal waters. The latter two species, rarely recorded in the world, are fully illustrated based on Brazilian material.

The endemic Indian genus Haplanthodes (Acanthaceae) is revised. Four species, viz. H. neilgherryensis, H. plumosa, H. tentaculata and H. verticillata and a new variety, H. neilgherryensis var. toranganensis are recognized. Lectotype is designated for Haplanthodes, Haplanthus plumosus and H. verticillaris. The nomenclature of the Linnaean name Ruellia tentaculata is also discussed. Micromorphology of seed using light microscope (LM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) is observed for the first time, and two types, reticulate and micro papillate, have been recognized based on surface sculpturing pattern. The genus differs from the related genera Andrographis and Haplanthus by distinctly two grooved seeds with hygroscopic hairs. Pollen grains of the genus are oblate or prolate spheroidal, distinctly triangular, trizonocolporate with reticulate exine ornamentation.

The variety of instrumentation available to the researcher today can be overwhelming and confusing. Scanning Electron Microscopes (“SEM's) are no exception, and choosing one can often serve as an exercise in dealing with complexity. First time purchasers are most at risk, being subject to a barrage of information that attempts to sway the purchaser in one direction or the other. As a result, one can sometimes be drawn to the details of the latest “high end” performance parameter, while overlooking the basics. At its worst, the selection process can degrade to one of vague guesswork with little hard data to serve as a compass.By applying a methodical approach to define your individual requirements, carefully designed tests of actual instruments, and discussions with your collaborators, potential and experienced users, one can begin to ensure a successful selection process.

Using light microscope (LM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), the megaspores and microspores of 77 samples representing ca. 70 species of Selaginella from China are observed. Combing previous studies, the spore morphology of nearly all documented Selaginella species from China were reviewed. Based on the morphological characteristics in megaspores and/or microspores, we divided the spores of Chinese species into 15 types and three types are further divided into various subtypes. Each type and subtype are described in detail and a key to the types and subtypes of spores is given. For the first time, the systematic significance of microspores of Selaginella are discussed, and the results indicate that microspores of Selaginella are significant in the systematics of Selaginella. Some important morphological characteristics in spores (e.g., color, micro-sculpture, size, etc.), often been neglected in previous studies, are introduced. Some spore-morphological synapomorphies of the clades and subclades, identified by recent molecular work (Zhou et al. 2015a), are well established. Using the spore morphology, the delimitation of some taxonomically difficult species in Selaginella is assessed.

Specimens of the Neogene marine diatom Thalassiosira dolmatovae have been studied with a scanning electron microscope for the first time. The observations revealed the morphological features typical of this species including arrangement of different kinds of processes. T. dolmatovae has one single subcentral strutted process, a ring of marginal strutted processes, a labiate process located at the margin and enclosed by two strutted processes. Marginal strutted processes with outward extensions and without inward extensions have internal openings surrounded by 4 satellite pores. The location of a labiate process not on the valve face and the presence of marginal strutted processes with outward extensions indicate that the studied species really belongs to genus Thalassiosira not to genus Shionodiscus. A valid description of T. dolmatovae is given.
