Relations between Family Structure and Students' Health-Related Attitudes and Behaviors

This study examined the relations between family structure and students' health-related behaviors. Participants were 6,130 Greek students, ages 11 to 16 years. They responded to questionnaires based on the Planned Behavior model assessing attitudes, perceived behavioral control, intentions and behavior regarding healthy and unhealthy habits. Students who reported growing up with one or no parent reported more unhealthy lifestyle attitudes and behaviors (smoking, drug use, violence, exercise, nutrition) than students growing up with both parents. The findings suggest that family structure is related to students' healthy or unhealthy lifestyle, indicating that in health education programs all members of the close environment within which the children live should be involved, especially for children who do not live with both parents.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Illinois has risen sharply over the last two months, from about 2,000 new cases a day in late September to 10,000 or so currently. In this report we evaluate whether there have been significant changes in the behaviors that facilitate the spread of the disease. The COVID States Project has been conducting a 50-state survey roughly once a month since April about attitudes and behaviors around COVID-19. Here we focus on public-health related behaviors that facilitate/inhibit the spread of the disease. It has become apparent that behaviors of particular importance are (1) those which bring people into indoor proximity; and (2) mask wearing.

Purpose. To review applications of Ajzen's theory of planned behavior in the domain of health and to verify the efficiency of the theory to explain and predict health-related behaviors. Methods. Most material has been drawn from Current Contents (Social and Behavioral Sciences and Clinical Medicine) from 1985 to date, together with all peer-reviewed articles cited in the publications thus identified. Findings. The results indicated that the theory performs very well for the explanation of intention; an averaged R2 of .41 was observed. Attitude toward the action and perceived behavioral control were most often the significant variables responsible for this explained variation in intention. The prediction of behavior yielded an averaged R2 of .34. Intention remained the most important predictor, but in half of the studies reviewed perceived behavioral control significantly added to the prediction. Conclusions. The efficiency of the model seems to be quite good for explaining intention, perceived behavioral control being as important as attitude across health-related behavior categories. The efficiency of the theory, however, varies between health-related behavior categories.

PurposeThis paper aims to explain the discrepancy between pro-environmental intentions and behaviors with moderating effects of two socio-cultural values (espoused individualism and faith in others) on the link between intentions and actual behaviors to save electricity.Design/methodology/approachAn online survey of 303 consumers in Hong Kong with a structured questionnaire was used to collect the data to test all the hypothesized relationships.FindingsAttitude toward saving electricity has a significant positive effect on the intentions to save electricity, but subjective norms and perceived behavioral control have no such effect on intentions but do positively affect the actual electricity saving behavior. Finally, the link between intentions and behavior to save electricity is negatively moderated by espoused individualism and positively by faith in others.Research limitations/implicationsThis study was conducted with a sample of consumers in Hong Kong; hence, its findings may not be generalizable to other countries.Originality/valueThis study provides new insights into the link between pro-environmental intentions and behaviors by looking beyond the theory of planned behavior and exploring the moderating role of socio-cultural values on the intention-behavior link.

The health and nutritional status of pregnant women determined at teenager and adult during a eligible woman, so everyone must have knowledge, attitudes and behaviors about nutrition so that they don’t have mistakes in food selection. The purpose of this observation is determine the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and behavior about nutritional balance with the nutritional status of students in Poltekkes Kemenkes Bengkulu in 2020. The design of this observation is obsevational cross-sectional design conducted in January in Poltekkes Kemenkes Bengkulu with a population of 640 people and a sample of 60 people. The statistical analysis used the pearson correlation test. The results showed that the average knowledge about balanced nutrition was good enough, the average attitude about balanced nutrition was good, the average behavior about balanced nutrition was good and the average nutritional status of female students was in the normal category. There is a relationship between knowledge about nutritional balance with nutritional status of student (r = 0.324), there is a relationship between attitudes about nutritional balance with nutritional status of student (r = 0.373), and there is a relationship between behavior about nutritional balance with nutritional status of student (r = 0.343). It is expected that students can improve their knowledge, attitudes and behaviors about nutritional balance.

Effectiveness of video game addiction prevention using ludo game for elementary school studentsPurposeThis study aimed to determine the effectiveness of ‘Ludo game’ for increasing knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of elementary school students concerning video-game addiction.MethodsThe research was a quasi-experimental study with pre and post tests and a control group design. The subjects were 99 elementary school students who were divided into treatment groups (two groups of intervention) and a control group. The data were collected using a questionnaire of knowledge, attitudes and behavior. Data analysis used paired t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) with significance level of 95% (p <0.05). ResultsThe characteristics of the study subjects in all three groups before the intervention were normally distributed. Paired t-test results showed that the ludo game and interactive lectures can improve knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. However, there was no significant difference of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors through Ludo compared to health education through interactive lectures in health education delivery. ConclusionLudo game and interactive lectures together can effectively improve the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of elementary school students. Health education through ludo games was no more effective than the interactive lecture methods in increasing the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of students on the prevention of video-game addictions.

This chapter is a review of the relevant literature on effecting changes in attitudes and behaviors toward people with disabilities. It begins with a discussion of the goals of the book and the activities in the book. There is discussion of the relationship between attitudes and behaviors, and whether a change in one is followed by a change in the other. The core research about the bases of attitudes toward disability and attitude change is reviewed. The move in the past few decades from attention to implicit bias to focus on explicit bias is highlighted. The rationale for not using simulation exercises is provided, as well as the social underpinnings of the activities.

Two studies were conducted to predict physical activity in school-aged children. Study 1 tested the utility of an integrated model in predicting physical activity (PA) intention and behavior—the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and self-efficacy theory. Six hundred and forty-five New Zealand children (aged 11–13 years) completed measures corresponding to the integrated model and a self-reported measure of PA one week later. Perceived behavioral control (PBC) and subjective norm were the two strongest predictors of intentions. Task efficacy and barrier efficacy were the two strongest predictors of PA. A second study (Study 2) was conducted to determine whether the self-efficacy measures could discriminate objectively measured PA levels. Sixty-seven Canadian children (aged 11–13 years) completed task and barrier self-efficacy measures. The following week, children classified as ‘high’ (n = 11) and ‘lower’ (n = 7) for both task and barrier efficacy wore an Actical® monitor for seven consecutive days to provide activity-related energy expenditure (AEE) data. Results showed that children with high efficacy expended significantly greater AEE than their lower efficacious counterparts. Findings from these two studies provide support for the use of self-efficacy interventions as a potentially useful means of increasing PA levels among school-aged children.

Research indicates that high sugar intake in early childhood may increase risks of tooth decay, obesity and chronic disease later in life. In this sugar fact study, we explored whether an online intervention which focused on comprehensive and useful information about nutrition labels impacted mother’s choice of low sugar food. The intervention was developed on the basis of the theory of planned behavior. In total, 122 mothers were recruited. Mothers were divided into an online-only group and a plus group. Knowledge of sugar and nutrition labels, behavioral attitudes, perceived behavioral control, behavioral intentions and behavior towards purchasing low-sugar products with nutrition labels were collected. After the intervention, both groups exhibited significantly enhanced sugar and nutrition label knowledge, perceived behavioral control, behavioral intentions and behavior. Compared to the online-only group, knowledge, perceived behavioral control and behavior of the plus group significantly improved. After the intervention, about 40% of the plus group and 80% of the online-only group still did not know the World Health Organization (WHO) sugar recommendations. Understanding sugar recommendations and using nutrition labels are crucial to help people control calorie and sugar intake. Further research with a larger sample is warranted to evaluate the effects of the intervention on long-term changes in shopping behavior. More efficient and convenient nutrition education is required to increase public awareness of sugar recommendations and help people control calorie and sugar intake.

Abstract Objectives Proper nutrition is essential to athletic performance, yet many collegiate athletes fail to obtain adequate energy and nutrients to meet recommendations. Additionally, athletes’ healthy eating intentions do not always align with their actual dietary behaviors. The objective of this study is to assess the dietary intakes and the food and nutrition related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors (KAB) of collegiate athletes at the University of [blinded]. Methods For this cross-sectional analysis, athletes will be recruited via email (goal sample size of n = 40) to complete a web-based survey consisting of demographic information, food and nutrition related KAB, and a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The FFQ will be modified from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Food Questionnaire and ask about foods, beverages, and supplements consumed in the last 30 days. The KAB questions will focus on food and nutrition related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. The knowledge portion will consist of the validated Abridged Nutrition for Sport Questionnaire. The attitude and behavior sections will consist of questions created by a Dietetics and Nutrition (DN) graduate student, assessed by current DN faculty for content validity, and pilot-tested in a sub-sample of collegiate athletes at another institution. Survey respondents will have the option to receive a $5 discount code for use at the [blinded] Campus Store and/or be entered to win one of three test packages from the Human Performance Lab (HPL) at [blinded]. The test package will include one BOD POD test and one VO2max test. Data will be analyzed to assess the dietary intakes and the food and nutrition related KAB. Results N/A (study protocol). Conclusions Assessing the dietary intakes and the food and nutrition related KAB of collegiate athletes at [blinded] will help to inform the development of future nutrition education materials and programs. We also hope to strengthen interprofessional ties between the DN Department and [binded] Athletics and to establish a partnership for future opportunities for collaboration that will contribute to student and athlete success.
