AbstractThe 4d-transition-metals carbides (ZrC, NbC) and nitrides (ZrN, NbN) in the rocksalt structure, as well as their ternary alloys, have been recently studied by means of a first-principles full potential linearized augmented plane waves method within the local density approximation. These materials are important because of their interesting mechanical and physical properties, which make them suitable for many technological applications. Here, by using a simple theoretical model, we estimate the bulk moduli of their ternary alloys ZrxNb1−xC and ZrxNb1−xN in terms of the bulk moduli of the end members alone. The results are comparable to those deduced from the first-principles calculations.

An investigation into the structural, electronic and optical properties of superlattices(SLs) (ZnSe)n/(ZnTe)n was conducted using first principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). The total energies were calculated within the full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital (FP-LMTO) method augmented by a plane-wave basis (PLW), implemented in LmtART 7.0 code. The effects of the approximations to the exchange-correlation energy were treated by the local density approximation (LDA). The ground state properties of (ZnSe)n/(ZnTe)n binary compounds are determined and compared with the available data. It is found that the superlattice (n-n: 1-1, 2-2 and 3-3) band gaps vary depending on the layers used. The optical constants, including the dielectric function ε(w), the refractive index n(w) and the reflectivity R(w), are calculated for radiation energies up to 35eV.

First-principles calculations are performed to study the structural, electronic, thermodynamic and thermal properties of the InP and InAs bulk materials and InAs x P 1-x ternary alloys using the full potential-linearized augmented plane wave method (FP-LAPW) within the density functional theory (DFT). The dependence of the lattice constant, bulk modulus, band gap, Debye temperature, heat capacity and mixing entropy on the composition x was analyzed. The lattice constant for InAs x P 1-x alloys exhibits a marginal deviation from the Vegard's law. A large deviation of the bulk modulus from linear concentration dependence (LCD) was observed for our alloys. We found that the composition dependence of the energy band gap is almost linear by using the mBJ and EV-GGA approximations. The microscopic origins of the gap bowing were explained and detailed by using the approach of Zunger and co-workers. Furthermore, the calculated phase diagram shows a miscibility gap for these alloys with a high critical temperature. Thermal effects on some macroscopic properties of InAs x P 1-x alloys are predicted using the quasi-harmonic Debye model, in which the phononic effects are considered. This is the first quantitative theoretical prediction of the thermal properties of the InAs x P 1-x alloys, and we still expect the confirmation of experimental studies.

First-principles calculations are presented for CdGeN2 and ZnGe0.5Sn0.5N2 compounds with the orthorhombic structure derived from wurtzite. Lattice constants and internal parameters are obtained from local density approximation full-potential linearized muffin-tin orbital calculations and the quasiparticle self-consistent GW method is used to calculate the band structures. Corrections for zero-point motion and exciton binding energy are included. Both approaches lead to gaps in the blue-green region.

The structural, elastic and thermodynamic properties of the A15 structure V3Ir, V3Pt and V3Au were studied using first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) within generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and local density approximation (LDA) methods. The results have shown that both GGA and LDA methods can process the structural optimization in good agreement with the available experimental parameters in the compounds. Furthermore, the elastic properties and Debye temperatures estimated by LDA method are typically larger than the GGA methods. However, the GGA methods can make better prediction with the experimental values of Debye temperature in V3Ir, V3Pt and V3Au, signifying the precision of the calculating work. Based on the E–V data derived from the GGA method, the variations of the Debye temperature, coefficient of thermal expansion and heat capacity under pressure ranging from 0 GPa to 50 GPa and at temperature ranging from 0 K to 1500 K were obtained and analyzed for all compounds using the quasi-harmonic Debye model.

Elastic constants of NaCl-type TiN under pressure were investigated by first-principles calculations within both local density approximation (LDA) and Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof generalized-gradient approximation (PBE-GGA). At ambient pressure, the calculated lattice parameter, bulk modulus, and elastic constants of NaCl-type TiN are in well agreement with other available values. Under pressure, all elastic constants,C11,C12, andC44, are found to increase with pressure.C11, which is related to the longitudinal distortion, increases rapidly with pressure whileC12andC44which are related to the transverse and shear distortion, respectively, are much less sensitive to pressure.

AbstractExpected to provide a clue about the origin of zero moment in the bulk phase of Plutonium, Pu1-xAmx alloys have attracted a great attention, in which upon doping the system transforms from the Kondo lattice to the diluted impurity limit. To understand the electronic structure and the magnetic properties of Pu in different crystal environments, we performed fully self-consistent first-principles calculations of the PuAm system based on the local density approximation (LDA) combined with static (LDA+U) and dynamic corrections (LDA+DMFT) for on-site electron correlations. The electronic structure strongly depends on the level of approximation for correlation effects. The exchange interactions between Pu 5f electrons and the Kondo screening strength were estimated and compared, which provide a new insight to Pu magnetism.

AbstractWe discuss the recent first principles calculations of the properties of interfaces between metals and oxides. This type of calculation is parameter-free, and exploits the density functional theory in the local density approximation to obtain the electronic structure of the system. At the same time the equilibrium atomic structure is sought, which minimises the excess energy of the interface. Up to now calculations of this type have been made for a few model interfaces which are atomically coherent, that is with commensurate lattices. Examples are Ag/MgO and Nb/Al2O3. In these cases it has been possible to predict the structures observed by high resolution electron microscopy. The calculations are actually made in a supercell geometry, in which there are alternating nanolayers of metal and ceramic. Because of the effectiveness of metallic screening in particular, the interfaces between the nanolayers do not interfere much with each other.Besides the electronic structure of the interface, such calculations have provided values of the ideal work of adhesion. Electrostatic image forces in conjunction with the elementary ionic model provide a simple framework for understanding the results. An important role of such calculations is to develop intuition about the nature of the bonding, including the effects of charge transfer, which has formerly only been described in an empirical way. It may then be possible to build atomistic models of the metal/ceramic interaction which have a sound physical basis and can be calibrated against ab initio results. Simpler models are necessary if larger systems, including misfit dislocations and other defects, are to be simulated, with a view to understanding the atomic processes of growth and failure. Another area in which ab initio calculations can be expected to contribute is in the chemistry of impurity segregation and its effect at interfaces. Such theoretical tools are a natural partner to the experimental technique of high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy for studying the local chemical environment at an interface.

Structural and elastic properties as well as lattice dynamics of ternary MgS x Se 1-x alloy have been studied using first-principles calculations. These are done using density functional theory (DFT) and density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) within the local density approximation (LDA) and employing the virtual-crystal approximation (VCA). We found that the lattice parameter, the elastic constants and the phonon frequencies follow a quadratic law in x.

Through first-principles calculations we study the electronic structures and optical properties of two-dimensional (2D) Sn[Formula: see text]Ti(Zr)[Formula: see text]S2 alloys. The results indicate that the band gap value of Sn[Formula: see text]Ti(Zr)[Formula: see text]S2 alloys is decreased continuously when Ti(Zr) concentration is increased, which is very beneficial to optoelectronic devices applications. Moreover, the static dielectric constant is increased when the Ti(Zr) concentration is increased in the 2D Sn[Formula: see text]Ti(Zr)[Formula: see text]S2 alloys. In addition, we also calculate the imaginary part [Formula: see text] dispersion of Sn[Formula: see text]Ti(Zr)[Formula: see text]S2 alloys along the plane with different Ti(Zr) concentrations. The threshold energy values decrease with increasing Ti(Zr) concentrations in the Sn[Formula: see text]Ti(Zr)[Formula: see text]S2 ternary alloys. Moreover, the calculations of formation energy also indicate that these 2D alloys can be fabricated under some experimental conditions. These results suggest that Ti(Zr) substituting Sn atom is an efficient way to tune the band gap and optical properties of 2D SnS2 nanosheets.
