Melon breeding for fruit quality improvement is important to produce new varieties that meet consumers’ demand. The aim of this study was to elucidate the fruit characteristics of melon at five different maturity stages, involving several genotypes belonging to two cultivar groups: reticulatus and inodorus. The experiments were conducted in three planting seasons: (1) January-March 2015 (13 genotypes), (2) December 2015-February 2016 (56 genotypes), (3) February-May 2016 (9 genotypes). These trials were conducted at the Tajur II experimental station of IPB, Bogor, and each trial was arranged in a single factor randomized complete block design with three blocks. Maturity stages was determined based on fruit rind color and net coverage, and their effects on fruit quality were studied using combined analyses over seasons. Maturity stage significantly affected the fruit length, fruit diameter, flesh thickness, fruit weight, and sugar content. The average weight of the fruits at maturity stage 4 (838.90 g) and 5 (931.79 g) was significantly greater than that of stage 1 (584.42 g). The sugar content increased from maturity stage 2 (5.51 oBrix) to 3 (6.13 oBrix) and to 5 (8.18 oBrix). Fruit weight significantly correlated with fruit length (r = 0.53), fruit diameter (r = 0.85), fruit rind thickness (r = 0.33), and flesh thickness (r = 0.63). Maturity stages affected the quality of melon fruits, and therefore the determination of appropriate harvesting criteria is important in melon cultivations.Keywords: cantalupensis, correlation, inodorus, fruit quality, skin colour

<p>ABSTRACT<br />Breeding of melon requires the availability of genetic diversity and extensive evaluations of the genetic materials. Evaluations on fruit quality and yield potential are among the important steps in melon breeding. This research was aimed at studying the genetic diversity of 17 melon genotypes based on fruit traits and identifying the potential genotypes to be used as genetic materials in melon breeding programs. The research was conducted from August to October 2015 at the IPB Experimental Station Tajur II, South Bogor, 250 m above sea level. The experiment was arranged in a single factor of randomized complete block design with four replicates. Results of the research showed that genotype effects were significant for all observed traits except for days to hermaphrodite flowering. Traits having broad sense heritability estimates greater than 50% were days to male flowering, days to harvest, fruit length, fruit diameter, flesh thickness, fruit rind thickness, fruit weight, and sugar contant. P21 and P19 genotypes were potential for fruit weight and sugar content, while P2 was potential for fruit weight and P12 for sugar content only. Fruit weight showed significant positive correlations with fruit length, fruit diameter, flesh thickness, and fruit rind thickness. Clustering based on morphological traits generally separated reticulatus and inodorus genotypes into different groups.<br />Key words: correlation, heritability, simultaneous selection</p><p>ABSTRAK<br />Pemuliaan tanaman melon memerlukan ketersediaan keragaman genetik dan evaluasi yang ekstesif pada materi genetik yang digunakan. Evaluasi karakteristik, kualitas buah, dan potensi hasil merupakan tahapan penting dalam pemuliaan tanaman melon. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari keragaman genetik dari 17 genotipe melon berdasarkan karakteristik kualitas buah dan mengidentifikasi genotipe potensial untuk dijadikan materi genetik dalam program pemuliaan. Percobaan dilakukan pada bulan Agustus hingga Oktober 2015 di Kebun Percobaan IPB Tajur II, Bogor Selatan (250 mdpl) menggunakan 17 genotipe melon. Penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan rancangan kelompok lengkap teracak (RKLT) faktor tunggal dengan empat ulangan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa genotipe berpengaruh nyata terhadap semua karakter yang diamati kecuali umur berbunga hermaprodit. Karakter yang memiliki nilai heritabilitas arti luas lebih besar dari 50% adalah umur berbunga jantan, umur panen, panjang buah, diameter buah, tebal daging, tebal kulit, bobot, dan kadar gula. Genotipe yang memiliki potensi untuk sifat bobot buah dan kadar gula tinggi adalah P21 dan P19, sedangkan P2 dan P12 masing-masing memiliki potensi yang baik untuk bobot buah dan kadar gula saja. Karakter bobot buah memiliki korelasi positif dan nyata dengan panjang buah, diameter buah, tebal daging buah, dan tebal kulit buah. Pengelompokan berdasarkan karakter morfologi secara umum dapat memisahkan genotipe-genotipe melon reticulatus dan inodorus ke dalam grup yang berbeda.<br />Kata kunci: korelasi, heritabilitas, seleksi simultan</p>

The purpose of this experiment is to evaluate the phenotypic appearance the yield character of five genotypes of cayenne pepper at Sukamantri, Ciamis region. The experiment used a randomized block design, with five replications. The experiment material consists of five genotypes of cayenne pepper, namely Unpad Ratuni, CR8873, Dewata, Taruna, and Rabani. The experiment was conducted at Sukamantri, Ciamis with altitude of 983 m above sea level (asl.) from August 2017 to February 2018. Data observed included fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit weight per fruit, fruit weight per plant, fruit weight per plot, and fruit weight per hectare. The experiment results show that there are differences in phenotypic characters among the five genotypes tested. Genotypes of the Gods, CR8873, and Ratuni Unpad show the highest potential yield (10.961 ton/ha, 0.345, and 10.232), with fruit weight of fruit per 1.382 gram, 0.911 grams, and 1.311 grams.Keywords: cayenne pepper, phenotypic character, yield

<p>The purpose of the research was to studied the response of honey pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Durch) to the kind of natural PGRs substances in various dosages.The research was conducted at the Greenhouse of griculture Faculty Siliwangi University since April 2017 until September 2017, by ecperiment method using Randomized Block Design, 9 treatments, i.e., b0: control, b1: onion bulb 200 ml, b2: onion bulb 300 ml, b3: bamboo shoots 200 ml, b4: bamboo shoots 300 ml, b5: banana 200 ml, banana b6: banana 300 ml, b7: mix (onion bulb + bamboo shoots + banana) 200 ml, b8: mix (onion bulb + bamboo shoots + banana) 300 ml. Each of treatmnent replicated three times. The parameters analyzed were plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, plant dry weight, fruit weight per plant, fruits weight per pieces, fruit length, and fruit diameter. The results showed that honey pumpkin gave the same response to the natural PGRs with various dosages on plant height, number of leaves, plant dry weight, fruit weight, fruit length, and fruit diameter. But, honey pumpkin gave the different response on the leaves area and fruit weight per plant. The largest leaves was found by giving extract of banana bulb of 300 ml (7119.8 cm2) and the mixture extract (onion bulb + bamboo shoots + banana bulb) of 300 ml (6978.5 cm2). The highest of fruit weight per plant is in extract of bamboo shoots 300 ml (388.6 g), and extract of banana bulb 300 ml (347.6 g).</p>

Integrated use of organic and inorganic fertilizers could improve both growth and yield of okra plant. The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of organic and inorganic fertilizer on growth and yield parameters of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) at experimental area of Noakhali Science and Technology University, Bangladesh during the period of 18th December, 2018 to 19th March, 2019 (Rabi season). In this experiment, “Arka Anamika” variety of okra was used. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four treatments viz. T1= INM (organic and inorganic), T2= Inorganic (NPK), T3= Organic (cowdung), T4= Control and three replications. Data were taken on the growth and yield parameters such as plant height (cm), number of leaves per plant, number of branches per plant, days to first flowering (days), number of fruit per plant, individual fruit weight (gm), fruit length (cm) and fruit diameter (cm). Among all treatments INM (organic and inorganic) was responsible for highest plant height (49.96 cm), maximum number of leaves per plant (22.33) and branches per plant (6.33), accelerated days to first flowering (39 days), increases the number of fruit per plant (14.33), individual fruit weight (24.89 gm), fruit length (15.5 cm) and fruit diameter (1.98 cm). So this study clearly indicated that, among all treatments INM (Organic and inorganic) performed the best and it will be suitable for okra production. Asian Australas. J. Food Saf. The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm, Department of Horticulture, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur to evaluate the Performance of Selected Okra Genotypes for Growth and Yield Parameter. The study was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) from March 2008 to July 2008. The studied characters were plant height, branches plant-1, days to first flowering, days to first fruit harvest, picking duration, fruit length, fruit diameter, fruits plant-1, fruit weight, picking duration, yield plant-1, yield hectare-1 and virus infestation. The results showed that studied genotypes differed significantly regarding all the character studied. The maximum plant height (173.92 cm), days to first flowering (40.00), days to first fruit harvest (9.33), picking duration (49.33) found in Green glory genotypes while maximum branches plant-1 (2.50) found in Seminis. The highest fruit length (15.85 cm) and fruit weight (17.81 g) was recorded in IPSA okra, fruit diameter (18.54 mm) in Green glory, fruits plant-1 (15.27), yield plant-1 (250.24 g), yield hectare-1 (13.73 t ha-1) in Jhalak while lowest virus infestation also recorded in Jhalak in all the  studied days after sowing. From the present investigation, it can be concluded that the genotypes ‘Jhalok’ and ‘BARI Dherosh 1’ performed better among the studied genotypes and can be recommended for commercial cultivation.

This study aims to determine the effect of fertilizing nutrients that can increase the growth and yield of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) with hydroponic techniques. The research was conducted at the screen house of the Biotechnology Lab Research and Development Division of PT East West Seed Indonesia, in Benteng Village, Campaka District, Purwakarta Regency. This research was conducted in December 2017 until March 2018. This study used a randomized block design (RBD) with 9 replications. Planting factor is a nutrient solution consisting of N1 enza nutrition, N2 alfesindo nutrition, and N3 ewindo nutrition. Parameters observed were plant height, plant dry weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, number of planted fruit and crop fruit weight. The media used in this study was roasted husk charcoal. The results showed that the response of nutrient solutions was significantly different from observations of plant height, whereas the response of nutrient solutions to observations of dry weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, number of fruit plantations and fruit weight of plantations were not significantly different. The results showed that the best nutritional solution was ewindo nutritional solution.

In the present investigation, 29 genotypes of ridge gourd were grown during 2016-2017 at the experimental field of Regional Horticulture Research Station, Patuakhali, Bangladesh. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The mean sum of squares is due to various sources of variance for different characters of ridge gourd genotypes. The results indicated highly significant variation among the genotypes for the 11 characters studied viz., such as fruit length, fruit diameter, single fruit weight, number of fruits per plant, yield of fruit per plant. The genotype BD2975 showed the highest performance in fruit length (42.05cm) and weight of fruits (258.90g). While the genotype PK3 showed the highest performance in number of fruits per plant (28.67), respectively. Of eleven traits, eight showed high heritability (over 80%). The highest genotypic and phenotypic coefficients were recorded in the parameter fruit yield per plant (39.59% and 40.96%). Res. Agric., Livest. Fish.6(1): 45-55, April 2019

ABSTRACT The present study was conducted to evaluate different fertilization-management strategies in ten progenies of passion fruit from the third recurrent selection cycle and their effects on yield and fruit-quality traits. For this purpose, we adopted the strategy of correlations analysis, using the phenotypic and path correlations in different environmental conditions characterized by three levels of fertilization. The trial was set up as a randomized-block design in a split-plot arrangement with progenies representing the plots and three levels of potassium-nitrogen fertilization as the sub-plots, with three replicates. Path analysis showed that number of fruits was the variable of highest correlation with fruit diameter at fertilization I. Fruit weight and pulp weight were correlated with each other and with other traits like fruit length and fruit diameter at the three fertilization levels, except for number of fruits, which was correlated with nitrogen and potassium only at fertilization II. Path analysis also revealed that fruit diameter (3.125) showed the highest direct effect on yield at fertilization I. However, fruit weight and number of fruits showed, at fertilization II, the highest direct effects of 2.964 and 1.134 on yield, respectively, and number of fruits had a high phenotypic correlation and direct effect on yield at the three fertilization levels: 0.528 at fertilization I; 2.206 at fertilization II; and 0.928 at fertilization III. The results demonstrate the greater direct effect obtained with fertilization II, suggesting that the level adopted at fertilization II can provide satisfactory gains in yield and is thus recommended for the population in question.

The study was carried out at altitude of ± 27 mdpl using factorial randomized block design (RAK). Firstly, Fish Waste POC (P) with 3 treatment levels, P1 = 20 ml/l water, P2 = 30 ml/l water and P3 = 40 ml/l water. Secondly, Chicken Manure (K) with 3 treatment levels, K1 = 0.75 kg/plot, K2 = 1.5 kg/plot and K3 = 2.25 kg/plot. The observed parameters were fruit length, fruit diameter, number of fruit per plot and fruit weight per plot.Based on the study, it was found that Fish Waste POC did not significantly affect on all the parameters observed. Chicken manure had a significant effect on the observed parameters, fruit length, fruit diameter and fruit weight per plot, while the combination of both treatments showed that there was no significant effect on all observed parameters

Abstract Apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) is a world-wide highly appreciated fruit, with its attractive colour, soft texture and typical flavour. In the current investigation, 68 apricot accessions collected from Jammu and Kashmir, India were analysed to determine the measure of variation using 12 qualitative and 16 quantitative traits with an aim to identify superior apricot accessions with excellent fruit quality traits. High phenotypic variability was observed among the studied apricot accessions with significant differences among most of the qualitative and quantitative traits. Fruit-related characteristics including fruit weight, fruit length, fruit ratio, fruit firmness, fruit shape, fruit suture, stone weight, kernel weight and stone shape were the most diverse with a high coefficient of variation (>30%). One way analysis of variance showed significant differences (P < 0.0001) among all the quantitative traits. Significant positive and negative correlations were observed between all the agronomically important fruit quality traits. The principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that 75.34% of the variability was defined by the first eight components. The unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) dendrogram, based on all traits measured grouped the accessions into two main clusters with several sub-clusters. Both UPGMA dendrogram and PCA scatter plot formed a cluster of 14 accessions, having the highest values regarding most important fruit quality traits such as fruit weight, fruit length and width, fruit ratio, stone weight and kernel weight can be treated as potentially superior accessions. These accessions can be used directly for cultivation and in future apricot breeding programmes. The present findings are promising for genetic resource management, cultivar improvement and commercial applications of apricot in Jammu and Kashmir, India.
