This study is about Rimóc, a Hungarian village with 1 800 residents, where the local economic development (LED) is a main ambition, because in the concept of demographic and employment relations Rimóc is considered an underprivileged settlement. The research was carried out by a 5 manned team, where using the method of deep interviews, short interviews and a focus group interview, made with the help of locals, revealed some difficulties. These are the lack of cooperation between the locals, ethnic problems, lack of assets and motivation, which are preventing the process of the LED. Overcoming these problems can become the key of the future and sustainable development of the settlements. Since Hungary has many villages which also try to reach the state of self-sufficiency, in the case of Rimóc the tendency is similar, where the municipality, mainly the mayor, of the village initiated the begining of such processes in food supply and power supply.

Local economic development (LED) is essential for realizing self-sufficiency and its continuous operation. Ecovillages are human-scale full-featured settlements of village- or city-typed, try to form a model for sustainable life form. Establishing ecovillages and similar initiatives may be the result of such an economic development conception. Basing on the example of Rozsály situated in the lagged behind Fehérgyarmat subregion the factors of LED, environmental consciousness and arrangement for self-sufficiency are detailed in this study. Regarding the four dimensions of ecovillages, Rozsály meets fully the requirement of the social/community and cultural/spiritual dimensions. The economic dimension is also developed, though there are several fields needed to be developed. Due to the ecological dimension Rozsály cannot be considered as an ecovillage, the denomination ‘ecovillage initiative’ is more appropriate. The village, however, started a good direction in order to break out from the problems typical to the area.

This research extends bribery research toward entrepreneurial theory and practice by examining how bribery impacts new venture disbanding in China. Existing research suggests that bribery may enhance firms’ competitive advantage; however, building off of resource-based view and taking into consideration the institutional context in China, the current study proposes that firm bribery activity hurts new ventures by increasing the hazard of venture disbanding. Further, guided by resource dependence theory, this study examines how local economic development and organizing activity moderate the relation between bribery and disbanding. In particular, it is proposed that when local economic development is suffering, or when firms are not engaging in appropriate organizing activities, bribery will lead to higher chance of new venture disbanding. Data from Chinese entrepreneurs support these hypotheses.

The XXI century has reached the end of its first 20 years. Along the years, it has posed complex challenges to economists and economic geographers. For example, the results of elections and consultations in different countries have shown a strong sympathy with political positions that question the benefits of free international flows of goods, services, labour and capital. By the same token, some academics argue that despite international economics theory clearly acknowledges that free trade causes winners and losers, the expected higher gains have not been effectively used to compensate the losers. This article explores the main challenges of international economic integration in sub-national territories in Switzerland and Mexico to better understand the importance of delivering relevant and competent public policies based on territorial specificity.
