Purpose The purpose of this report is to describe and discuss an innovative culinary medicine interprofessional student educational project through collaboration with community partners.     Method After adapting the culinary medicine program to meet interprofessional education requirements, students from interprofessional graduate healthcare programs on a regional medical campus participated in a culinary medicine active learning experience utilizing the Goldring© curriculum.  For this project, students completed assigned readings prior to the hands-on culinary experience which utilized a patient case scenario and an educational debrief.  Anonymous post-survey quantitative and qualitative data was collected to determine the students’ opinions of the learning experience and the application of the information learned for patient care.   Results Thirty-three students from medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, nursing, radiologic imaging science, and genetic counseling participated.  The project consisted of three separate events, entailing the same learning experience.  The students reported the learning experience to be highly valuable.  Qualitative data analysis revealed three general themes:  1) the novelty of the information learned, 2) the relevance of the information for patients from the perspective of all disciplines represented in the learning experience, and 3) the value of teamwork.    Conclusions Collaboration with a local community culinary arts school provided a unique and innovative learning opportunity for regional campus healthcare students.  The focus of the culinary medicine learning experience to include interprofessional students created a rich learning environment allowing students to learn from, with, and about other healthcare disciplines in addition to practical application of culinary medicine.  The culinary medicine program’s combination of didactic and culinary skills training was well received by students. Students had a positive response to the curriculum and experience stating that they learned information that they were excited to implement with their patients.  To our knowledge UAMS Northwest Regional Campus is the first to implement culinary medicine curriculum with IPE requirements, and it is the first regional medical campus to implement the Goldring© curriculum.

Background: Regional medical campuses are often challenged with providing effective interprofessional education (IPE) opportunities for medical students that are comparable to those at main campuses. At distributed teaching sites, there is often less IPE infrastructure and fewer learners of other health professions. On the other hand, distributed medical education (DME) settings often have community-based clinical environments and fewer medical students, which can provide unique opportunities for IPE curriculum innovation.Methods: At the Niagara Regional Campus (NRC) of McMaster University, the Horizontal Elective for Interprofessional Growth & Healthcare Team ENhancement (HEIGHTEN) was developed to provide first-year medical students the opportunity to learn from and work alongside nurses in a community hospital. This study assesses HEIGHTEN’s impact on students’ knowledge, confidence, and attitudes towards interprofessional care, as well as student satisfaction with the learning experience using a mixed methods evaluation.Results: Findings suggest that HEIGHTEN provided an enjoyable learning experience, fostered positive interprofessional attitudes and an appreciation for the nursing role. Voluntary participation by medical students was high and increased both within the regional campus and with students from other campuses travelling to participate.Conclusion: This model for IPE can be feasibly replicated by distributed teaching sites to provide medical students with hands-on, experiential learning early in training, leading to positive attitudes and behaviours supporting interprofessional collaboration (IPC).

The purpose of this report is to describe and discuss the development and implementation of an interprofessional educational (IPE) program for students on a regional medical campus. IPE is important in training the next generation of health care professionals. Regional medical campuses often have reduced IPE activities due to limited resources and their distance from their main campuses. However, regional campuses can also provide opportunities for innovative solutions to provide IPE learning experiences. This article demonstrated how one regional campus created innovative opportunities to meet student needs.

Background: Regional medical campuses are often located in geographic regions that have different populations than the main campus, and are well-positioned to advocate for the health needs of their local community to promote social accountability within the medical school.Methods: At the Niagara Regional Campus of McMaster University, medical students developed a framework which combined research, advocacy, and theatre to advocate for the needs of the local population of the regional campus to which they were assigned. This involved a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with homeless individuals to explore their experience accessing the healthcare system and using a transformative framework to identify barriers to receiving quality healthcare services. Findings from the qualitative study informed a play script that presented the experiences of homeless individuals in the local health system, which was presented to health sciences learners and practicing health professionals. Participants completed two instruments to examine the utility of this framework.Results: Research-based theatre was a useful intervention to educate current and future health professionals about the challenges faced by homeless individuals in the region. Participants from both shows felt the framework of research-based theatre was an effective strategy to promote change and advocate for marginalized populations.Conclusion: Research-based theatre is an innovative approach which can be utilized to promote social accountability at regional medical campuses, advocating for the health needs of the communities in which they are located, with the added bonus of educating current and future health professionals.

The Emergency Medicine Researchers of Niagara (EMRoN) program is an evolving research incubator with the Niagara Regional Campus (NRC) of McMaster University’s Michael G DeGroote School of Medicine and Niagara Health (NH) that is becoming a productive research organization aligned with the strategic priorities of its partner organizations (NRC and NH). EMRoN is committed to advancing local community health care standards and sharing best practices with provincial and national peers.  In its first two years of operation EMRoN has achieved success in new structures, processes and outcomes that position it well to be a fulsome research organization for years to come.

In this article, I explore how the social contract of schooling and the three functions of schooling (Noguera 2003)—to sort, to socialize, and to control— impact and constrain the freedom and agency of a group of young Black and Latinx men in one suburban school district that was experiencing sociodemographic shifts in the Northeastern United States. I use qualitative data to frame how the young men experience schooling, and I show how the local community context facilitates the institutionalization of discriminatory sorting processes and racially prejudiced norms. I also show how the young men are excessively controlled and monitored via zero tolerance disciplinary practices, which effectively constrains their humanity and capacity to freely exist in their school and which inadvertently strengthens the connective tissue between schools and prisons.

Aims: To offer child health student nurses a broader learning experience in practice with an autonomous choice of a volunteer placement area. To reflect the changing nature of health care and the move of care closer to home in the placement experience. To evaluate participants' experiences. Design: This study used descriptive and interpretative methods of qualitative data collection. This successive cross-sectional data collection ran from 2017 to 2020. All data were thematically analysed using Braun and Clarke's model. Methods: Data collection strategies included two focus groups (n=14) and written reflections (n=19). Results: Students identified their increased confidence, development as a professional, wider learning and community engagement. They also appreciated the relief from formal assessment of practice and the chance to focus on the experience. Conclusion: Students positively evaluated this experience, reporting a wider understanding of health and wellbeing in the community. Consideration needs to be given to risk assessments in the areas students undertake the placements and the embedding of the experience into the overall curriculum.

The DeSTT concept of teacher training for leadership examines the importance of non-formal education, i.e., training for teachers. The monitoring study revealed the urgent needs of Kazakhstani teachers in training their leadership skills. The paper analyzes two sets of research questions (each consists of 6 sub-questions), which we defined as follows: 1) What are the challenges of teacher training/upskilling for leadership and their involvement in the local community? This group of questions was studied at the stage of preparing the project proposal. 2) What are the impacts of DeSTT training on teachers' leadership skills and experiences? This group of questions was studied during the 2nd year of the project lifetime. The purpose of this paper is to indicate the findings and implementation of the concept of preparing teachers for leadership from the project proposal launch to the execution of pilot trainings. Research methods employed in the study are interviews of universities specialists and analyzes of the State data/reports for the project proposal. Observations of training participants and post-training interviews were used to study the 2nd group of research questions. The findings of the study confirm the data obtained in both groups of interviews and observations. Participants were enthusiastic and interested in the pieces of training, aware and confident of the need to continue learning, share experiences, and develop leadership skills achieved in DeSTT training. The reflection on the central terms of leadership and training has proved to be crucial for teachers. Further research is to survey the implications of the DeSTT project for all its consumers. The dissemination and sustainability perspective of the project is to collaborate with the National Center ORLEU for training leadership skills to the instructors from 17 regional branches who, in turn, will train teachers for leadership. The authors acknowledge the Erasmus Plus CBHE for funding the DeSTT project.

Background: Interprofessional education (IPE) holds great promise in continuing to reform the management of complex chronic conditions such as HIV/AIDS, and Problem-based Learning (PBL) is a suitable format for IPE. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a large scale, compulsory interprofessional PBL module on HIV/AIDS education. In 2004, 30 physical therapy and 30 medical students at the University of Saskatchewan engaged in the HIV/AIDS PBL module. By 2007 over 300 students from seven healthcare programs were involved.Methods and Findings: The module was evaluated over the years using student satisfaction surveys, focus groups, self-assessments, and in 2007 with written pretest/post-tests. Students rated the learning experience about both HIV/AIDS and about interprofessional collaboration, at 4 or 5 out of 6 and effect sizes fell between d = .70 and 3.19. That only one pre-test/post-test study was conducted at a single institution is one of the limitations of this study.Conclusions: Students generally thought highly of the interprofessional PBL module on HIV/AIDS and learned a considerable amount. Although more research is needed to substantiate the self-assessment data, establish what and how much is being learned, and compare PBL to alternative methodologies, PBL is a promising approach to IPE.

Tulungrejo is a village located in Batu, East Java. This village surrounded by mountains and most of its people working as a farmer. The most popular agricultural product of Batu is apple and Tulungrejo is a village with the largest farm in Batu. As a village with the largest farms it should make the farmers live prosperous, but the fact shows that the farmers in Batu are not so prosperous. Since 2010 the number of apple production has also declined, many farmers choose to plant orange than apple. Some farmers of Tulungrejo Village established an Agro Tourism called Top Apel Mandiri with the aim to improve the farmer's economy. The research aim is to see how much the involvement of farmers in agro-tourism management. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. Data collection techniques using observation, interviews, and literature. The informant for this research are the owner of Top Apel Mandiri, the farmers in Tulungrejo, and also the vendors as the key informants. The results of this research is the community are involved in the planning and controlling process through Top Apel Mandiri, although not entirely. The the type of participation is Spontaneous Participation . At the organizing and actuating processs, the community still participates with the type of participation is Induced Participation . Custom plays a significant role in any organised community as well as in the building of mutual harmony and avoiding conflicts. The establishment of a custom is the result from the interaction between the wisdom of the local intellectuals and its environment to meet the needs of the local community. The Malay community is a group that is rich with traditions, ranging from the birth customs, marriage and death. Basically, in the practice of the Malay customs there exists two polemics in which forms two opposing schools of thought. First is the fundamentalist that rejects most local customary practices. Second, is the traditionalist as they only accept the valid customs practised in society and reject invalid customs. These opposing views can be seen in various customary practices, for example in the death custom or ceremonies such as tahlīl (recital ceremony for the deceased), talqīn (recital for the deceased during burial), and tunggu kubur (grave waiting). Therefore, this study focuses on exploring the practice of tahlīl (recital ceremony for the dead) and tunggu kubur (grave waiting) through the concept of the local wisdom from the perspective of the principles of Islamic jurisprudence. To achieve these objectives, this study deploys an eclectic approach and interview method. The collected qualitative data were analysed thematically. The results of the study showed that there are elements of local wisdom behind these practices. In the Malay community, tahlīl (recital ceremony for the deceased) is a form of psychological and emotional support as well as a communal approach to the family of the deceased while the practice of tunggu kubur (grave waiting) is an approach to protect the burried corpses from thefts and mystical activities. Therefore, the local wisdom implied behind the practices are valid and hence, included in the category of accepted customary practices.
