Purpose In September 2015, the UN member states approved an ambitious agenda toward the end of poverty, the pursuit of equity and the protection of the planet in the form of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets. The purpose of this paper is to raise a concern about the context and framework that science, technology and innovation have in the finalized text for adoption that frames the SDGs especially regarding environmental degradation. The authors argue that emphasizing technology transfer in the agenda has the risk to do not recognize other technological alternatives such as eco-technologies, and endorse a limited vision of the role of science and innovation in the achievement of the SDGs. Science for sustainability has to go further than technology transfer, even questioning the limits of the current patterns of intensive use of natural resources and inequity in consumption. By discussing the historical backgrounds of this paradigm and elaborating on the role of science to achieve sustainability in a broader sense. It is in these terms that inter- and intra-discipline and the roles of researchers in sustainability transitions acquire relevance. Design/methodology/approach Although many theories regarding human development are in place and under discussion, the dominant view, reflected in the UN agreement, is that the progress of a country can be measured by the growth in the per capita gross domestic product. This variable determines if a society is able to reduce poverty and satisfy its basic needs for present and future generations (Article 3: United Nations (UN), 2015). Progress and economic growth in several aspects of human development has been substantial over the past 40 years. However, at the same time, the state of the environment continues to decline (UNEP, 2012). The obvious inquiry of these opposing trends is whether progress irremediably comes at the cost of environmental degradation. In 1972, the Club of Rome’s report entitled “Limits to growth” (Meadows et al. 1972) confronted the viability of perpetual economic growth. The report alerted of the impossibility of endless growth in population and production in a finite planet (Gómez-Baggethun and Naredo, 2015). The essay forecasted future crises of food and energy if the population and economic growth continued to grow at the same rate of the first half of the twentieth century. Nevertheless, the catastrophic projections were not met, mostly because of great advances in agriculture, water and energy technologies. Findings The SDGs constitute a relevant international recognition of the importance of the three edges of sustainable development. However, the pathways toward the achievement of the SDGs need to fully recognize that poverty, inequalities and global environmental problems are expressing a deeper crisis in the shape of economic growth, patterns of production and consumption and, in general, the logic of no limits in the exploitation of natural resources (Sheinbaum-Pardo, 2015). For this reason, the science of sustainability requires a deep understanding of the technological change and that technology is not the only approach toward sustainability. Research limitations/implications The paper reflects a conceptual discussion of the narrow vision of science and technology in the SDGs and their UN framework. The most important objective in the UN documents is technology transfer. This has the risk to do not recognize other technological alternatives such as eco-technologies, and endorse a limited vision of the role of science and innovation in the achievement of the SDGs. Practical implications An important discussion of the key points regarding SDGs is developed. Social implications “Transforming our world: The 2030 agenda for sustainable development (UN, 2015)” presents a narrow vision and a limiting role to the science of sustainability. Moreover, if these issues are not recognized, the achievement of the SDGs will continue to gain only marginal success. Originality/value It brings out a very important discussion of the role of science and technology in the ambitious UN agenda of the SDGs.

Bangladesh Government has taken various initiatives for sustainable economic growth, creating strong employment market and upholding people’s prosperity in line with the achievement of targets of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Hence, utilization of huge active workforce consisting of 64 percent of the total population is a major concern that appears because of small employment market and the necessity of socio-economic development of this huge group as well as country. Engaging these potential human resources in overseas employment (OE) market has become a mandatory solution for development.OE constitutes of 9 per cent of total active workforce who are currently working across the world. In addition, about 30 million people are dependent on them. It indicates that the contribution of this active group on the society and economy is enormous. The study analyses connection between OE and SDGs, contribution of OE in achieving SDGs for socio-economic development and confusion about the sustainability of development. This paper utilized qualitative methodology and analysis was done using interpretative approach. Both primary and secondary data were used. The study found that overseas employees send about 15 billion US dollars every year to keep the economic growth stable and sustain foreign reserve. The remittance sent by the expatriates to their families is primarily used for buying food & cloth, educating their children, building houses and sanitation, establishing small businesses, contributing to social and religious organizations and also for buying permanent property i.e. buying land and houses with the saved money. Although their spending pattern signifies unproductive sector, it considerably contributes in the overall development of Bangladesh. The intended and unintended benefits of OE are directly connected to almost all SDGs. It is argued that without the contribution of OE, achievement of SDGs is unthinkable. Confusion of achieving sustainability arises as expatriates face myriad challenges because of extra cost, hazardous procedures, middle men involvement at home and abroad, precarious working conditions, unstructured job, misbehavior of foreign employers, non-availability of database of expatriates. A meaningful number of expatriates die every year because of accidents or lack of workplace safety. As the huge number of active workforce are migrant workers, country lacks of young generation and face social crisis. Receiving countries also face numerous challenges e.g. unemployment, overflow of illegal migrant workers, socio-economic and political crisis. These problems seriously affect expatriate workers who face banning and restriction. The study suggests to create opportunity in internal employment market to utilize potential human resources, develop and send skilled workforce to abroad, design real time database for all migrants, practice weekly monitoring for women and risky job holders, and develop effective negotiation with the host countries. The mining industry in the world has undergone a major metamorphosis in recent years. These changes have forced higher education to modify the curricula in a thorough way to meet the mining entrepreneurs’ needs. The paper’s scope is to answer the research question—how to attract students and implement Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in higher education in mining engineering? Based on the case of international cooperation carried out at the Faculty of Geoengineering, Mining and Geology of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology (WUST) within the framework of educational projects co-financed by European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) and EIT Knowledge and Innovation Communities Raw Materials (EIT RM), the authors prove that the idea of sustainable development can be introduced into the system of teaching mining specialists at every level of their higher education (engineering and master’s studies), through developing their new competencies, introducing new subjects taking into account innovative solutions and technologies, or placing great emphasis on environmental and social aspects. Examples of new curricula show a good way to change into the new face of a mining engineer.

In this article, the author examines the reasons for social stratification of the country’s regions and singles out the difficult socio-economic situation of the majority of single-industry municipalities in Russia as one of the main ones. The aim of the study is to analyze the efficiency of use of human resources in the country as a whole, as well as the current state of single-industry towns and create a step-by-step plan for their modernization and restructuring as a necessary vector for sustainable economic development. The article emphasizes the need to integrate efforts on the part of the state, society and business in solving social problems in certain territories. The study was carried out using the following methods: observation, modeling, method of scientific abstraction, analysis and synthesis. The study result was development of a universal step-by-step plan for development of single-industry municipalities, substantiation of the possibility of its application as one of the factors for the effective use of human resources in a particular territory.

الملخص تعد التنمية الاقتصادية ذات أهمية كبيرة حيث حظيت بالإهتمام من قبل الدارسين والباحثين والاقتصاديين داخل الدولة منذ عقود، وخصوصاً بعد انتهاء الحرب العالمية الثانية، عندما بدأت الدول التي عانت من هذه الحرب بعمليات إعادة الاعمار، ومن ثم بعد ذلك بدأت تظهر الانواع الاخرى من التنمية، كالتنمية المستدامة والتنمية البشرية، وبدأ الحديث عن التنمية الاجتماعية والسياسية كذلك، وعلى الرغم من ذلك الا ان هناك تحديات كثيرة تقف في طريق التنمية الاقتصادية كالفقر والتخلف، ولا بد من اتباع إستراتيجيات معينة لتحقيق التنمية الاقتصادية وبالتالي تحقيق السلام، حيث ان التنمية والسلام هما ذات علاقة وثيقة ببعضهما، نظرا لان معظم الحروب والنزاعات تنشب لأسباب اقتصادية اما للسيطرة على الموارد او بسبب التوزيع غير العادل لها، ويتناول هذا البحث إستراتيجيات التنمية الاقتصادية المحققة للسلام، مع بيان العلاقة بين السلام والتنمية، والمفاهيم المرتبطة بهما.Summary Economic development has a great importance, it has the First attention by scholars, researchers and economists within the state, especially after the end of the WWII, when the countries that suffered from this war began the reconstruction process, then the other types of Development began to appear, such as sustainable development and human development, and also they began to talk about social and political development. However, many challenges stand in the way of economic development such as poverty and underdevelopment, and certain strategies must be followed to achieve economic development and thus achieve Peace, peace and development are closely interrelated, since most wars and conflicts arise for economic reasons or either for the control of resources or because of unfair distribution of resources. This research deals with the economic development strategies for peace, with explanation of the relationship between peace and development.

Human capital management in an organisation is one of the key areas of company success and its competitive advantage, particularly in a service company such as Raben (Zając, 2014). As an entity operating in the Transport Forwarding Logistics (TFL) sector, its decisions in the area of human resources management depend on industry factors. This is evidenced, among others, by the structure of employees. The aim of this case study is: first, to draw attention to the problems that companies operating in specific sectors may face. The second goal is to identify their ability to implement the concept of a company responsible to employees. The company strives to take the goals set by the United Nations (SDGs) into account. These include taking care of appropriate employment structure, ensuring employee development, ensuring diversity, caring for work-life balance as well as safety in the workplace, and building relations with external stakeholders. The specificity of the industry in which the presented company operates makes it pursue a number of Sustainable Development Goals—both with regard to employees and in terms of environmental protection. Some need to be adapted accordingly.

<p><em>In 2018, the quality of Indonesian human resources was ranked 87 out of 157 countries. The good growth of Indonesian human resources, of course, starts from the womb or prenatal period, under five years of age, children, adolescents, to working productive ages. This study chose the topic of stunting, because of the urgency to improve the competitiveness of Indonesian human resources in the regional and international realms. Superior human resources are certainly formed from a long process since childhood. This paper aims to apply the concept of sustainable development goals (SDGs) as a framework adopted by the Government of Indonesia in reducing the prevalence of stunting cases and to provide the latest holistic analysis regarding the implementation of SDGs policies by the Government of Indonesia in reducing the prevalence of stunting cases. This study used qualitative research methods. The result of this research is that collaboration between state and non-state actors is needed to handle stunting cases in Indonesia. Starting from the synergy between ministries / institutions and collaboration with academics, public health scholars, companies, and foreign parties. These results are important as recommendations for each stakeholder in implementing the SDGs concept to reduce the prevalence of stunting cases in Indonesia.</em></p>

This paper analyses the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations in the 2030 ‘Transforming the World’ Agenda, from 2015, as a contribution to business ethics and ethical economy. The Sustainable Development Goals combine political aims with visions of economic development and social justice and are therefore important for business ethics and corporate social responsibility. Thus, the Sustainable Development Goals constitute a driver for ethical economic development and social change. However, there is a need for critical analysis of the possibilities of Sustainable Development Goals of functioning as a vision and a strategic tool for management and governance. The aim of the paper is to investigate these possibilities of the Sustainable Development Goals of contributing to business ethics and ethical economy with mobilization of business, public institutions and organizations, and non-governmental organizations. After presenting the Sustainable Development Goals, the paper critically discusses their scope and potential for corporate social responsibility, business ethics and corporate sustainability. This involves the problem of how the Sustainable Development Goals can contribute to a transformation towards another economy. As a contribution to business ethics, the paper elaborates on partnerships for Sustainable Development Goals, sustainable performance management systems and the Sustainable Development Goal Compass with the aim of interpreting Sustainable Development Goals as a basis for progressive business ethics models.

This topic of sustainable development and maintenance and development of innovations contributes to the improvement of the ecosystem as a whole. The development and application of global sustainable development goals in the economy of each country contributes to improving the quality of life of the population, conservation of nature, etc. Globalization of economic development contributes to new trends in the future. Within the framework of this direction, various problems related to the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) issues are investigated. Sustainable development in general contributes to the accelerated growth of new trends in economic and environmental aspects in many developed and developing countries. The main goal of sustainable development is to create a single basic framework for the unification, renewal and rational use of natural and energy resources, human capital and other energy sources. Innovative technologies contribute to the development of these areas at an accelerated pace, for example, the use of solar energy will help to reduce energy and fuel costs, which will have a significant impact on the health of people and all living organisms.
