The increasing number of coffee shops identifies the dynamics of urban life in Purwokerto. However, how does the existence of these coffee shops influence the socio-cultural life of the society?  The research aims to examine the socio-cultural functions of coffee shops in Purwokerto in accordance to the role of public sphere. The concept of public sphere by Jurgen Habermas is used the theoretical foundation of the analysis. Using descriptive qualitative method, the study analyses data taken from the observation and interview process. Due to the large number of coffee shops in Purwokerto, the researchers select six coffee shops with different characteristics. The research finds that coffee shops in Purwokerto tend to be a place to meet up after school or work and spend their leisure time, as the coffee shop offers a good atmosphere to be more focused and productive on their work. Thus, the function of public sphere is hardly found. Instead, coffee shop becomes a private place for individuals to engage with their own individuality and communities

Sharing practices are an important part of urban life. This article examines the appropriation of alleys as communal space to understand how sharing practices are embedded in localities, how communal space is constituted and maintained, and how this sustains communal life. In this way, the article aims to understand the spatial dimension of sharing practices, and the role of communal space in strengthening social relationship networks and urban sustainability. Seowon Maeul and Samdeok Maeul in Seoul are compared in terms of their urban regeneration approaches, community engagement in planning, street improvement, and the consequences that the transformation had on the appropriation of alleys as communal space. The research findings show that community engagement in planning is as important as the provision of public space if streets are to be appropriated as communal space. Community engagement has changed residents' perception and use of alleys as a shared resource in the neighbourhood by improving their capacity to act collectively and collaborate with other stakeholders in addressing problems and opportunities in cities.

AbstractThis article seeks to elucidate the debate that was constituted by the press throughout the 1870s and 1880s in the Brazilian provinces of Paraíba and Pernambuco around the French model of parliamentary monarchy that contrasted with the republicanism of the USA. Taking over the role of public opinion maker, the press sought to highlight the issue of the Public Space since that distinct ways of dealing with it was considered in each of those idealized international political models. This article also mapped some relations that the newspapers analyzed betrayed between the debates on the Public Space and the rhetoric of modernity that accompanied them. Often the question of science and technique seemed to eclipse the dimension of conflict that is proper to the political universe and the public sphere, unifying the glances around a dazzle with the material improvements that the century promised. Keywords: Public Space, Formation, Press. The urban life is not separated from the saturation of the daily routine and activities, which causes the level of stress ratio in major cities such as Jakarta is quite high. During the demands and routine of life, many people looking for entertainment or recreation to take off the fatigue of daily activities. The role of interaction room for the people of Menteng is very important, in addition to the physical layout of the environment, the public space also bears the function and significance of social and cultural very high. However, the rapid growth of the city's demand for urban land demands increased. The privatization of land, either individually, as well as legal entities/institutions, has caused the existence of public space to be increasingly affected. Even in the crowded settlements of residents, people have no more public space adequate to host their activities. People no longer have a shared space to interact with each other, communication between citizens; children no longer have a place to play in the outside space, so that the culture of togetherness and tolerance is increasingly misguided. With the presence of this container during busy and the needs of the surrounding community, it is expected to increase the attitude of tolerance between the community and produce new activities that can increase the productivity and tolerance between the surrounding residents who have a wide impact on the region.
