Exploring Psychological Career Mechanisms for Enhancing Employees’ Self-Efficacious Career Adaptability

The study extends contemporary research on adaptive career behaviour by exploring the link between three under-researched psychological career-related attributes (career values, career enablers and career harmonisers) that may potentially serve as mechanisms for enhancing individuals’ self-efficacious career adaptability (career confidence). Participants (N = 248) were early and middle career stage individuals employed in an organisation situated in Gauteng, South Africa. Analyses included regression-based moderated-mediation procedures to assess conditional direct and indirect effects of the psychological career constructs. The results indicated that although the career harmonisers did not have a significant mediating effect, the conditional indirect effect of career enablers on career confidence through career harmonisers increased when the score on career values was high. Employees’ career confidence may potentially be enhanced by means of well-developed career enabling skills and positive psychosocial career attributes on the condition that they have strong (well-crystallised) career values.

The purpose of this study is to examine whether mental toughness can predict competitive anxiety through the motivation and competitive experience possessed by athletes. Respondents involved were 175 athletes who were students (93 female and 82 male). Path analysis reports that there are direct and indirect effects of the measured variable. Our results show the influence of mental toughness on competitive anxiety. However, the influence of exerted is a positive effect that if athletes have good mental toughness, then their competitive anxiety increases as well. Researchers suspect that there are other constructs that accompany mental toughness in influencing competitive anxiety in athletes. The mediation model also shows that athletes who have high motivation and competitive experience significantly mediate the influence between mental toughness and athlete’s competitive anxiety. Concluded that mental toughness, motivation, competitive experience, have a reciprocal relationship from competitive anxiety. In addition, the results of this study also reported that mental toughness, motivation, and competitive experience are able to predict competitive anxiety.

Purpose Total quality management practices have been embraced by many quality-oriented firms around the world in order to improve performance in terms of quality, productivity, customer satisfaction and profitability. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the direct and indirect effects of TQM practices on various performance indicators specifically in the Indian manufacturing context. This paper focuses on developing an integrated model encompassing significant structural relations showing the linkage between TQM practices and multiple performance indicators – quality performance, customer satisfaction level, operating performance, employee performance, innovation performance, society results and financial performance. Apart from analyzing the direct relationship between constructs, the main purpose of this work is also to identify all the possible mediation effects of performance indicators on others using structural equation modeling (SEM). Design/methodology/approach An in-depth literature review was conducted to identify the key practices for the successful implementation of TQM in an organization as well as to explore TQM-performance effects. As a result, four TQM practices and seven performance indicators were identified. The data were collected from 260 Indian manufacturing organizations. After confirming the reliability and validity using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, the proposed hypotheses were tested using SEM. Findings Through testing the proposed hypothesized structural model, the direct and indirect effects of TQM practices have been examined. Moreover, this work developed an integrated model showing the interrelationships between TQM practices and performance indicators identified. The findings gave an insight that the effective implementation of TQM practices assists in reaping benefits in the every facet of an organization. By implementing these practices effectively, managers can expect to realize improvement in all these performance areas. Research limitations/implications This study is subject to certain limitations. Even if all variables were found to be reliable, valid and satisfactory non-response bias test results, the remote possibility of bias in the data might not be fully ruled out. There is a probability of occurrence of common method variance and common method bias, since the data for both dependent and independent variables were collected from the same respondents in the organization. Additionally data on performance indicators were based on the respondent’s assessment and awareness only. The mediating relationship between individual TQM practice and performance indicators can be investigated in future studies. Since society results are a necessity in future, the direct and indirect practices focusing toward this can be explored. In addition, there is a research scope to identify the moderating effect of contextual factors such as degree of TQM implementation, scope of operation and type of organization. Practical implications The findings of the research offer some potentially valuable insights into the relevance of TQM practices and its strong linkage on various performance indicators, through which the overall organization performance can be enhanced. By implementing these practices effectively, managers can expect to realize improvement in all these performance areas. Hence, the managers can adopt this approach to assess their organization’s level in the quality path and as a guideline in implementing TQM practices. They can also measure the impacts of TQM practices on multiple performance measures in order to evaluate their TQM initiatives. Especially the deployment of quality culture is a requisite to excel in the every facet of performance. The positive relationship between TQM practices and various performance indicators can motivate the managers to allocate resources in time, effort and capital for TQM implementation in pursuing quality, leading to customer retention and competitiveness. The findings of the study strongly suggest the need for the holistic implementation of TQM practices for the survival of the organization. Originality/value While there is a considerable volume of researches carried out to investigate the linkage between TQM and organization’s performance across the globe, still little is evidenced regarding the mediating effect of performance indicators on others, especially in the Indian manufacturing context. The present paper attempts to extend and add knowledge to this line of research and to bridge the gap and provide sufficient empirical evidence specifically in the Indian scenario. Thereby helps the organization to follow a guideline to improve the overall performance.

1. Calcium depletion from the medium of the isolated perfused kidney reduced renin release and renal perfusate flow. 2. Reintroduction of calcium increased renin release and perfusate flow. 3. The ionophore X 537 A (0·1–4 μmol/l) increased renin release both in the presence and absence of calcium in the medium. 4. The ionophore A 23187 (1–10 nmol/l) increased as well as decreased renin release. There was a positive correlation between direction of this effect and renal perfusate flow. 5. The results are compatible with the view that the effects of calcium and ionophores on renin release are the sum of direct and indirect effects of these agents, the predominant indirect effect being the modification of vascular tone.

Drawing on resource-based theory, we analyze the relationship between having LGBT executives in a firm’s leadership positions and its value and financial performance. The existence of LGBT executives is considered to be associated with employee and customer goodwill towards LGBT-friendly policies and practices and to lead to human capital and reputational benefits. Our findings suggest that there is a positive effect of the presence of LBGT executives on a firm’s value, both directly and indirectly, through its effect on the firm’s financial performance. We interpret this as suggesting that besides the direct effect of the existence of LGBT executives on a firm’s value, an indirect effect also exists, mediated through financial performance, presumably through the effect that this has on employee and customer goodwill towards LGBT-friendly policies and practices. As far as we are aware, our study is the first to examine the impacts of the presence of LGBT executives, as well as distinguish between its direct and indirect effects on firm value.

This study aims to see and know the direct and indirect effects of lifestyle on purchasing decisions and consumer satisfaction. The population in this study were 500 respondents from Dumai City who bought and used a Kawasaki D-Tracker 150 motorcycle, using Path Analysis. In this study the sampling method uses the Probability Sampling Technique, which is a sampling technique that provides equal opportunities for elements of the population to be selected as sample members. In this study the authors set a sample of the criteria of respondents, namely age 17 years and above. Samples taken in this study used the Slovin formula. The results in this study that lifestyle has a positive and significant effect on consumer purchasing decisions. Lifestyle and purchasing decisions have a positive and significant effect on customer satisfaction. There is an indirect effect of Lifestyle on Consumer Satisfaction through Decisions

The study analyzes the effect of age, education, gender, experience, and the number of family members on the interest to be an entrepreneur and entrepreneurial decision. In addition, the study tests whether the interest to be an entrepreneur mediates the effect of age, education, gender, experience, and family number on the decision to be an entrepreneur. The population of the study are the street vendors in the Jember downtown. The samples consist of 192 respondents. This research uses the path analysis to determine the direct and indirect effects. The results show that age, education, gender, experience, and the number of family member have positive and significant effects on interest and the decision to become an entrepreneur. Interest mediates the effect of age, education, gender, experience, and the number of family member on the decision to become an entrepreneur.

This paper explores the possibility that the labour productivity enhancing effects often ascribed to capital intensity may partly act through some mediating variable. The paper uses a mediation model to estimate direct and indirect effects of capital intensity on labour productivity in Pakistan‘s manufacturing industries. The data involve 229 industries at five-digits level of aggregation. The data are taken from Census of Manufacturing Industries for the year 2005-06. Using capital intensity as an independent variable and advertising expenditure as a mediating variable, the paper estimates total, direct, and indirect effects on labour productivity. Approximately 18 percent of total effects on labour productivity are found to be mediated through advertising expenditure. The statistical significance of indirect effects is tested using standard normal tests as well as bootstrap method, and these effects are found to be significant. This study aims to determine the total direct and indirect effects of consumer behavior in social media on the interest in visiting the Pak Kumis Chicken Noodle restaurant greater than 0.5 (50%). In this study, researchers conducted an associative approach with the variables studied, namely consumer behavior in social media taking, visiting interest and business image. The population in this study were 29 consumers who visited the Pak Kumis Chicken Noodles restaurant in Kediri and were willing to fill out the questionnaire in the middle of January 2018. The data analysis used path analysis techniques and sampling techniques using purposive sampling technique. Data collection techniques are carried out by conducting a survey to the research location through a questionnaire by submitting the questions to be filled in by the respondent in the middle of January 2018. From this study, it can be concluded that consumer behavior in social media directly influences the interest of visitation, consumer behavior in social media does not have an indirect effect through corporate image, and interests have an indirect effect through corporate image. The other variables that can affect the interest of visitation such as promotion, suitability between wants and needs, and other things that need to be considered for future research. It is hoped that there will be other variables that influence the interest of visitation which need to be considered by the next researcher or object of research. Are Directive Strategies in international disputes the most effective mediation method for obtaining durable peace? A standard statistical analysis shows no effect of Directive Strategies on settlement durability. This result however, is misleading, failing to take selection and indirect effects into account. In this article, I identify when selection and process effects reinforce or oppose each other. Directive Strategies have opposing negative selection and positive process effects, which can distort inferences about their influence. Strategies’ direct and indirect effects are also examined. Directive Strategies are more likely to lead to Full Settlements – the most comprehensive form of agreement, which improve the settlement durability (an indirect effect). However, Directive Strategies are used in more intractable disputes that result in fragile settlements (a direct effect). A statistical analysis of international disputes that takes these conflicting dynamics into account demonstrates the efficacy of Directive Mediation Strategies in producing durable agreements.

In vivo microdialysis was used in this study to reveal the role of cannabinoids in regulating serotonin (5-HT) efflux in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) and dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN). The cannabinoid CB1 receptor agonists WIN55212-2 and CP55940 systematically administered to rats caused significant increases in 5-HT efflux in the NAcc but failed to have an effect in the DRN. To reveal mechanisms underlying regionally selective responses, we tested the hypothesis that cannabinoids have both direct and indirect effects on 5-HT efflux, depending on the location of CB1 receptors in the neural circuit between DRN and NAcc. We showed that the direct effect of cannabinoids caused a reduction in 5-HT efflux whereas the indirect effect resulted in an increase. Furthermore, the indirect effect was blocked by the GABAA receptor antagonist bicuculline in the DRN, suggesting that the action is likely due to a presynaptic inhibition on GABAergic activity that exerts a tonic influence on neuronal circuits regulating 5-HT efflux. Involvement of GABAergic neurons was confirmed by measuring changes in GABA efflux. Taken together, our study suggests that cannabinoids may have direct and indirect effects on the 5-HT regulatory circuits, resulting in regionally selective changes of 5-HT efflux in the brain.
