Factors and Considerations Influencing Faculty Members’ Decision to Publish with Journals: A Nigerian University Experience

It has been observed that faculty members of Kwara State University (KWASU) in Malete, Nigeria, publish in journals based on some factors and considerations. These factors and considerations guide their choice of publishing in journals. The aim of this study was to show the factors and considerations influencing KWASU faculty members’ decision to publish with journals. The study adopted a descriptive survey method, with a web-survey questionnaire as data collection instrument. The population for the study was 482, of whom 192 respondents responded positively, representing 39.8% of the total population. A quantitative analysis was done of data collected, using the automatically-generated analysis from Google Forms. The hypothesis was tested using Microsoft Excel. It was found that some of the factors that influence the choice of KWASU faculty members to publish with journals, include: peer review; publication cost; open access; impact factor; and frequency of publication. It was found that more than half of the faculty members give consideration to editorial board lists of journals before sending out their manuscripts to journals. It was also found that there is a statistically significant relationship between factors and considerations for the choice of publishing in a journal. Challenges encountered by faculty members in publishing with journals include poor communication between author and editor, faculty members’ poor awareness of journals, difficulty in getting collaborators, and pressure to get an academic promotion.

Purpose of the study: The study evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of a library system in a state-owned university to ensure that the information needs and services of clients are adequate. It looked into the available resources and required facilities to assess changes and improvement. Likewise, the functional effectiveness of the academic library was also determined. Methodology: The study used a descriptive survey method to describe available library resources and the extent of the functional effectiveness of academic library services of the Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU) Philippines. The 175 respondents came from the most frequent library users. This study utilized the purposive sampling technique. Descriptive statistics were used to determine the adequacy and functional effectiveness of the library. Result: The result revealed that the library services surpassed the minimum requirements on holdings and Filipiniana collection, but did not meet the required library collection published within the last five years. Periodicals needed to increase subscriptions and ICT required improvement. Librarians are qualified to manage the library. The respondents perceived the functional effectiveness of library services to be useful and very effective. Novelty/Originality of this study: This research study gives an empirical data as bases on the provision of Sustainable Development Plan to cater to the nature of users in the digital age with the consideration to balance the physical and virtual resources. Practical implications: This paper will be most helpful to academic libraries to continually revisit the resources and services to be responsive to the vision and vision of the university, demand for curriculum change, and research endeavour.

This study adopted a descriptive survey design to assess the extent of systems performance processes of Caraga State University in Butuan City, Mindanao, Philippines with the aim of gauging the extent of systems performance processes as rated by 164 respondents consisting of 38 Administrators, 71 Faculty Members and 55 Non-academic Staff. Results show that the school’s extent of systems performance processes was moderately achieved. The different perception of respondents on the extent of systems performance processes shows incongruence of perceptions among administrators, faculty and staff that leads to the gap in understanding the degree of university performance with regards to the financial aspects, customer satisfaction, internal business process efficiency and learning and innovation. The school needs to improve its processes especially its processes on customer satisfaction, internal business process efficiency and learning and innovation to improve its financial performance. Keywords - Systems Performance Processes, Customer Satisfaction, Internal Business Process Efficiency, Learning and Innovation.

The attitude of librarians in Nigerian university libraries has the potential to encourage or discourage digital libraries in e-learning. This paper addresses and discusses the attitudes of librarians towards digital library in e-learning, the imperativeness of training and knowledge for effective functionality of digital libraries in Nigerian universities. The paper uses the descriptive survey method to explore the attitudes of librarians towards digital libraries, advantages of digital libraries, and the types of e-learning that can be supported by digital libraries. It was discovered that training and knowledge are sine qua non of a positive attitude towards digital libraries in e-learning. And there was a high interest in the use of online information by researchers and learners but lack of awareness and how best to integrate e-learning resources into digital libraries pose a great challenge to the librarians in Nigerian universities.

The study aimed to measure the degree of organizational loyalty among faculty members at Kuwait University. The study used analytical descriptive survey method, and developed a questionnaire comprising (20) items which was administered to a sample comprising (183) faculty members. The study revealed that the degree of organizational loyalty is medium with a mean (3.01). Also, the study revealed no statistically significant differences among the respondents due to the study variables: gender, nationality, age, years of experience, type of college, and academic rank. In the light of these results, the study provided a number of practical recommendations and suggestions for further studies, i.e. instilling the spirit of teamwork and responsibility towards the university and nation, evaluating the performance of faculty members, promoting organizational loyalty by holding training courses, deepening religious awareness, paying more attention to factors that regulate work environment, conducting similar studies in other institutions, and other studies to reveal the relationship of organizational loyalty with personal characteristics, job satisfaction, and organizational justice.

As we progress down our career paths, we eventually approach a time to consider retirement, or should I say blissful retirement. My dear colleague Dr. Marc Cooper, who continued his work with the eJournal of Public Affairs as he celebrated his abbreviated retirement, would share our observations for how Dr. Rachelle Darabi was one of the best administrators/faculty members/and friend that we had the privilege to work with. It is important to realize her exceptional work, contributions, and the caring relationships and work environment that she facilitated in her capacity. As of the beginning of August 2020, Dr. Darabi officially retired from Missouri State University. To say that she is missed is an understatement. Fortunately, she has agreed to continue her service on EJOPA’s Editorial Board.

This study explored the use and perception of Wikipedia among medical students in a Nigerian university. Descriptive survey design was adopted using questionnaire as instrument to collect data from 60 medical students who were in their fourth year at Delta State University, Abraka, Nigeria. Data obtained were analysed with frequency counts and percentages. The study revealed that 91.7% of the medical students have used Wikipedia; 76.4% of them could not indicate precisely the number of times they have used it; 50.9% of the students use Wikipedia to complement lecture notes, 43.6% for research project as well as to complete class assignment, 14% of them use it to modify content of articles; a majority have good knowledge of the structure and content of the site; the challenges faced by the students are scantiness of information of some articles, unavailability of/inability to obtain articles on some topics from the site, and inaccuracy/unreliability of content of articles.

Teachers can facilitate students’ learning and enrich their learning activities by using instructional materials (IMs). They help the teachers in communicating to learners. As students differ in their responses to IMs, it is the responsibility of the teacher to use and select the most appropriate instructional materials that will promote learning among students. Hence, the researcher conducted this study to determine the IMs used by the faculty members of Batangas State University. The researcher used the descriptive method of research and utilized survey and interview to gather data from the 84 faculty members. Findings revealed that many were using textbooks, PowerPoint presentation, workbooks, manuals and modules while few were using magazines, news articles, monograph and audio/ video. Problems encountered in the utilization of IMs included unavailability, inadequacy and quality of materials and the faculty’s inadequate background on the manipulation of the material. Only 31 developed IMs, but many have plans of developing one. These lead to the conclusions that faculty-respondents mainly used traditional IMs and that availability and quality influenced their utilization. The study recommends that support for the utilization of IMs should be enhanced and accessibility plan be established to promote timely adoption and utilization of IMs.  Keywords - Educational technology, education, instructional materials, utilization, descriptive-survey, Philippines

The study is an investigation of doctor awareness and perception of the information resources and services in the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara. The descriptive survey method has been employed for the study. Also, with the aid of a questionnaire, data has been collected from doctors (academic staff) at DELSUTH, and analysed using a simple percentage. Findings reveal that the doctors are mostly aware of the availability of textbooks and reprographic services in the Medical Library. However, there is a perception of inadequacy of the information resources and services. The study also observes that although the doctors perceive information to be of clinical value and provide new knowledge, the information is not always relevant, accurate and current.

So far, there has been no serious correction awareness aimed at addressing and promoting career development through community engagement practice in Nigeria, especially in academic settings. No research has been carried out to examine faculty members, particularly professors’ experiences in developing career through community engagement activities in the Nigerian universities. To address this gap, this article presents the perspectives of professors on how faculty members can be attracted to community engagement as a strategy to develop career and boost the reputation of their respective institutions that has been dominated by teaching and research. This article employed the qualitative method, interviewing nine professors from diverse academic disciplines in a leading conventional university in Nigeria. From the analysis, community engagements were found to foster academic career development of the professors in their areas of expertise. More specifically, participatory community engagement outreach helped in expansion of knowledge through solving practical problems, career growth through promotion earned, and increased job satisfaction. The study concludes with implications for human resource development practice and suggestions for future research.

This study explained that the post-Covid world of work would demand a new set of employability skills. Higher education institutions need to respond by preparing graduates with manifest post-COVID-19 employability skills through innovatively delivered curricula. Through literature review, the study identified post-Covid-19 in-demands employability skills and ways of innovatively fostering them. The study adopted the descriptive survey method and canvassed (104) faculty members’ (from 9 public universities) opinions through an online poll on the skills they considered relevant for post-pandemic graduate employability and integrating them into universities curricula. Data collected were descriptively analyzed using frequency count and percentage. Findings showed that when universities commit to innovative curriculum delivery, students can easily acquire skills and competencies required to effective security and create jobs in the post-Covid job market effectively recommended that universities should innovate their curricula by integrating post-Covid in-demands skills needed for students’ post-Covid job market.
