Use and Perception of Wikipedia among Medical Students in a Nigerian University

This study explored the use and perception of Wikipedia among medical students in a Nigerian university. Descriptive survey design was adopted using questionnaire as instrument to collect data from 60 medical students who were in their fourth year at Delta State University, Abraka, Nigeria. Data obtained were analysed with frequency counts and percentages. The study revealed that 91.7% of the medical students have used Wikipedia; 76.4% of them could not indicate precisely the number of times they have used it; 50.9% of the students use Wikipedia to complement lecture notes, 43.6% for research project as well as to complete class assignment, 14% of them use it to modify content of articles; a majority have good knowledge of the structure and content of the site; the challenges faced by the students are scantiness of information of some articles, unavailability of/inability to obtain articles on some topics from the site, and inaccuracy/unreliability of content of articles.

The study focused on users satisfaction with library services at the Delta State University main Library, Abraka, Delta State. The objective was to find out if users are satisfied with the services, facilities, the library environment, information sources and staff of the library. Using the descriptive survey design the population for the study consisted of all registered library users in the Site II of the Delta State University, Abraka Campus. The study employed the simple random sampling techniques in selecting the sample size for the study, and with a questionnaire data were collected. The findings revealed that the services offered at the Delta State University are inadequate and below average. Most users were satisfied with the availability of information sources in the library but also registered that most of these information sources are not available for loan. The findings also showed that there is a significant relationship between the assessment of library collection by users and their satisfaction with information sources. The library environment is clean and the reading carrels are adequate but, there are no effective lightening and toilet facilities.

Students’ dependence on guessing so as to pass their examinations prompted this study on Undergraduate Students’ Achievement in GST 101 using Corrected Scores and Uncorrected Scores. The study involved the entire students of the first year undergraduate students of the Department of Guidance and Counselling, Delta State University, Abraka, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. Four research questions and three null hypotheses guided the study. Scores obtained by the subjects in the 2018/2019 GST 101 examination were used in the study. Two sets of scores namely, uncorrected scores and corrected scores were analysed using independent samples t-test. The result showed that students’ mean achievement in GST 101 differed significantly with respect to uncorrected and corrected scores. Students had a higher mean score in the uncorrected scores. Relating gender separately to corrected and uncorrected scores, the result produced no significant difference. It was concluded that the use of correction formula drastically reduced students’ original scores in GST 101. It is hereby recommended that correction formula be introduced in public examination to forestall guessing in examinations.

The use of illicit drugs in recent times in modern sport has become an issue of growing concern. This study assessed the factors responsible for the use of illicit drugs by medical students in sports in Delta State University Abraka The target population included five departments in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences of Delta State University Abraka. A cross-sectional survey design was conducted among 1,436 medical student athletes of the College of Health Sciences of Delta State University Abraka and random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 143 respondents. A researcher-made confidential questionnaire was the instrument used for the collection of data. A coefficient index score (r) of 0.78 was obtained which ascertained the internal consistency of the instrument was reliable. A total of 120 questionnaires were successfully retrieved and used for data analysis. Mean score and Pearson Product Moment Correlation were adopted as statistical tools for analyzing the obtained data. There was significant (p<0.05) relationship between the age of medical students and their knowledge of illicit drugs used in sports, however, there was no significant (p>0.05) relationship between the gender of the students and their knowledge of illicit drugs used in sports. Similarly, there was no significant (p>0.05) relationship between type of school of medical students and knowledge of illicit drugs used in sports. Findings from the study further equally revealed that there was no significant (p>0.05) relationship between parental background and medical students’ knowledge of use of illicit drugs in sports. Based on the findings of this study, it is obvious age was supported to determine the use of illicit drugs in sports by medical in sports, hence, the need for stringent policies to be censored especially towards the age requirement for medical student participation while adopting adequate measures to curtail the use of illicit drug among medical students. Abstract Purpose: The incidence of teenage pregnancy has attracted global concern due to its impact on the teen’s maternal health, the overall wellbeing of the child and the society at large. This study examined socio-economic variable of parents as a correlate promoting teenage pregnancy among medical students in Delta State University, Abraka Delta State. Methods: The Ex-Post Facto method was chosen as the research design for the study. 294 female medical students were selected from a total of 982 students from the medical college using simple random sampling technique. The instruments used for data collection was a self-structured and well-designed questionnaire containing 25 multiple choice items based on the research questions developed in the study. 278 questionnaires were successful retrieved from the field and was used for data analysis. Frequency count, percentages, mean score and Pearson product moment correlation were employed as the statistical technique for data analysis. SPSS version 21.0 was utilized for data analysis. Results: Findings from this study revealed that parental income (p=0.003) and occupation (p=0.005) were the viable parents’ socio-economic variable promoting teenage pregnancy among medical students in Delta State University, Abraka when compared to educational background (p=0.343), religion (p=0.307) and marital status (p=0.053) variables that were not significantly related. Conclusions: It appears that significant number of adolescent female students who become pregnant has to leave school and this have a long-term implication for them as individual, their family and their community. Therefore, effective parent-daughter relationships and school-based reproductive health education programmes are strongly recommended.

This study adopted a descriptive survey design to assess the extent of systems performance processes of Caraga State University in Butuan City, Mindanao, Philippines with the aim of gauging the extent of systems performance processes as rated by 164 respondents consisting of 38 Administrators, 71 Faculty Members and 55 Non-academic Staff. Results show that the school’s extent of systems performance processes was moderately achieved. The different perception of respondents on the extent of systems performance processes shows incongruence of perceptions among administrators, faculty and staff that leads to the gap in understanding the degree of university performance with regards to the financial aspects, customer satisfaction, internal business process efficiency and learning and innovation. The school needs to improve its processes especially its processes on customer satisfaction, internal business process efficiency and learning and innovation to improve its financial performance. Keywords - Systems Performance Processes, Customer Satisfaction, Internal Business Process Efficiency, Learning and Innovation.

This study examined the prevalence of abortion and its impact on the academic performance of medical female students in Delta State University, Abraka. Descriptive survey method was employed for the study while simple random sampling technique was utilized in selecting a target sample size of 164 female medical students from a population of 1,640 across five departments in the College of Health Sciences, Delta State University Abraka. Self-designed instrument was used as the instrument for data collection. 150 copies of the questionnaire were successful retrieved from the field and were used for data analysis. Frequency count and percentages was employed as the statistical technique for data analysis. Results obtained from this study revealed the following findings; abortion is prevalent among the female medical students leaving off-campus. Factors that influences female medical students include; poverty and financial concern, psychological factor, maternal and social factors, peer group influence and poor knowledge of the risk factors behind abortion. Consequences of abortion include; the risk of anxiety and depression, negative impact on the academic outcome, leads to school drop-out among female students, lower degree of social support, abandonment and rejection from family’s member and deprives the female student from regular reading. Therefore, strategies for preventing the negative effects caused by abortion include; educating the female medical student on the need to always use contraceptive, always organize seminars to inform the female student of the consequences of abortion, formulation polices that allows for disciplinary measures on victims of abortion and providing early sexuality education earlier for the female child

The study examines managing teacher education and innovative reforms agenda for curriculum execution in secondary schools in Imo state, Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive survey design. The population comprised of Five hundred and thirty (530) secondary school Principal in Imo state school system. The sample consisted of 200 duty principals randomly selected by stratified technique from each of the three education zones of the state, Okigwe, Orlu, and Owerri. Fifteen (15) items questionnaire was the instruments for data collection and the instrument was validated by experts in Imo state University, Owerri. The questionnaire which recorded a reliability coefficient of 0.89 was administered face to face to 200 respondents by the researchers who also retrieved same. The data collected were analyzed with mean and standard deviation and null hypothesis were tested using the z-test statistics at 0.05 level of significance. Based on the results, the researchers made crucial recommendations that government and stakeholders in education should emphasize on managing teacher education and innovative reform agenda to enhance development of the nation.

The study examined the prevalence of educational malpractice among University students as perceived by lecturers of Delta State University, Abraka. Three research questions were raised to guide the study. The study is a descriptive survey research. The purposive random sampling technique was used to select a sample of 92 lecturers for the study. The instrument for this study is the questionnaire. The instrument has face and content validity through expert judgement and instrumentation. The Cronbach alpha procedure was used to assess the internal consistency of the items. The value obtained was .73. The results revealed that there is a high prevalence of educational malpractice among undergraduates of Delta State University, Abraka. The findings also revealed that there is no significant difference between lecturers in their perception of the prevalence of educational malpractice among students. Lastly, the result showed that the status of lecturers has no impact on their perception of the prevalence of educational malpractice among students. Implications for counselling practice and education were discussed.

The study investigated counsellor trainees’ views of practicum exercise in Guidance and Counselling programme in Delta State University, Abraka, Nigeria. To guide the study, four research questions were raised and one hypothesis formulated. The study is a descriptive survey which utilized the ex-post facto design. The population was made up of all guidance and counselling students who had done the practicum exercise in the 2017 Sandwich contact. A sample of 35 students was used and this was drawn using purposive sampling technique. The instrument used for data collection was the questionnaire which was valid and had a reliability index of 0.74. The data was analysed using mean, standard deviation and t-test for the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that students gained competencies during the period, had positive view about their supervisor but suggested that supervisors should come more than once. Moreover, the students enjoyed the support of the school counsellor and the school head. On duration, the study revealed that the period was too short. The study recommends among others for extension of the practicum exercise period and also for supervisors to visit more than once.
