The effectiveness and performance of industrial hydro-processing Ebullated Bed Reactors (EBRs) are highly dependent on the bed hydrodynamics and operating conditions. In present work, hydrodynamics of EBRs was studied in a cold model experimental setup using air–water–solid particles system. Pressure gradient method and Residence Time Distribution (RTD) technique were used to estimate the individual holdups, and dispersion coefficients in the lab-scale ebullated bed column. System Hydraulic Efficiency (HEF) was also estimated. The results showed that liquid internal recycle ratio, which characterized the EBRs, has a predominant effect on the individual holdups and dispersion coefficients. Empirical correlations were developed for prediction of phase holdups, and dispersion coefficients with good accuracy.

Fouling represents a major problem for Gas Turbines (GTs) in both heavy-duty and aero-propulsion applications. Solid particles entering the engine can stick to the internal surfaces and form deposits. Components' lifetime and performance can dramatically vary as a consequence of this phenomenon. These effects impact the whole engine in terms of residual life, operating stability, and maintenance costs. In the High-Pressure Turbine (HPT), in particular, the high temperatures soft the particles and promote their adhesion, especially in the short term. Unfortunately, predicting the GT response to this detrimental issue is still an open problem for scientists. Furthermore, the stochastic variations of the components operating conditions increase the uncertainty of the forecasting results. In this work, a strategy to predict the effects of turbine fouling on the whole engine is proposed. A stationary Gas Path Analysis (GPA) has been performed for this scope to predict the GT health parameters. Their alteration as a consequence of fouling has been evaluated by scaling the turbine map. The scaling factor has been found by performing Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations of a HPT nozzle with particle injection. Being its operating conditions strongly uncertain, a stochastic analysis has been conducted. The uncertainty sources considered are the circumferential hot core location and the turbulence level at the inlet. The study enables to build of confidence intervals on the GT health parameters predictions and represents a step forward towards a robust forecasting tool.

Following the adequate model of the reciprocating compressor piping system and the compressor design parameters, operating conditions and gas parameters, the mechanical system of compressor piping, gas-column system, pressure pulsations and of vibration response are numerically simulated. And the main factor bringing to the compressor piping system vibration is identified. A reasonable way to controlling piping vibration is developed to achieve a better efficiency. The maintenance and reliability of aircraft engines is strongly influenced by the environmental and operating conditions they are subjected to in service. A probabilistic tool has been developed to predict shop visit arisings and respective maintenance workscope that depends on these factors. The tool contains a performance model of the engine and a number of physics-based damage mechanisms (at piece part level). The performance model includes variation of performance relevant parameters due to production scatter and delivers the conditions to determine the deterioration of the individual parts. Shop visit maintenance is modeled as a result of limitations to engine operation, e.g. reaching TGT limit, or mechanical deterioration. The influence of maintenance actions on engine performance is determined on component basis. The maintenance strategy can consist of proactive and reactive maintenance elements. The decision of repair or replacement of any single part is implemented through a sum of different logic rules in the model. The loading capacity scatter depends on the engine type and is operator independent. It is represented via data-driven distribution functions, in which the probabilities of failure, repair and replacement for each part are specified depending on the number of reference flight cycles. The loading variation is considered through a physics-based cycle weighting. The developed tool runs a Monte Carlo simulation in which a fleet of engines is modeled through their respective lifetime of maintenance and performance deterioration. Using an example it is shown that the model can describe the effects of varying environmental and operating conditions on part damage, and therefore engine maintenance cost and reliability.

Introduction. At present, stands with running drums are widely used for various types of tests. Power stands play a special role. Such stands take the mechanical power from the driving wheels of the car. This simulates the process of movement of the vehicle under operating conditions. Such equipment has various designs, principles of operation and performance. It is also used in tests that are different by purpose, development stages and types: research, control, certification, etc. Therefore, it is necessary in order to determine the traction-speed, fuel-efficient and environmental performance characteristics.Materials and methods. The paper provides the overview of the power stands with running drums, which are widespread on the domestic market. The authors carried out the analysis of the main structural solutions: schemes of force transfer between the wheel and the drum; types of loading devices; transmission layout schemes and features of the control and measuring complex. The authors also considered corresponding advantages and disadvantages, recommended spheres of application, demonstrated parameters and characteristics of the units’ workflow, presented components and equipment.Discussion and conclusions. The authors critically evaluate existing models of stands with running drums. Such information is useful for choosing serial models of stands and for developing technical tasks for designing or upgrading the equipment.

Bois-Rouge factory, an 8000 t/d cane Reunionese sugarcane mill, has fully equipped its filtration station with vacuum belt press filters since 2010, the first one being installed in 2009. The present study deals with this 3-year experience and discusses operating conditions, electricity consumption, performance and optimisation. The comparison with the more classical rotary drum vacuum filter station of Le Gol sugar mill highlights advantages of vacuum belt press filters: high filtration efficiency, low filter cake mass and sucrose content, low total solids content in filtrate and low power consumption. However, this technology needs a mud conditioning step and requires a large amount of water to improve mud quality, mixing of flocculant and washing of filter belts. The impact on the energy balance of the sugar mill is significant. At Bois-Rouge mill, studies are underway to reduce the water consumption by recycling low d.s. filtrate and by dry cleaning the filter belts.

AbstractHydrate-based gas separation technology is applicable to the CO2 capture and storage from synthesis gas mixture generated through gasification of fuel sources including biomass. This paper reports visual observations of crystal growth dynamics and crystal morphology of hydrate formed in the H2 + CO2 + tetrahydropyran (THP) + water system with a target for developing the hydrate-based CO2 separation process design. Experiments were conducted at a temperature range of 279.5–284.9 K under the pressure of 4.9–5.3 MPa. To simulate the synthesis gas, gas composition in the gas phase was maintained around H2:CO2 = 0.6:0.4 in mole fraction. Hydrate crystals were formed and extended along the THP/water interface. After the complete coverage of the interface to shape a polycrystalline shell, hydrate crystals continued to grow further into the bulk of liquid water. The individual crystals were identified as hexagonal, tetragonal and other polygonal-shaped formations. The crystal growth rate and the crystal size varied depending on thermodynamic conditions. Implications from the obtained results for the arrangement of operating conditions at the hydrate formation-, transportation-, and dissociation processes are discussed.

The embrittlement of two types of nuclear pressure vessel steel, 15Kh2NMFA and A508 Cl.2, was studied using two different methods of magnetic nondestructive testing: micromagnetic multiparameter microstructure and stress analysis (3MA-X8) and magnetic adaptive testing (MAT). The microstructure and mechanical properties of reactor pressure vessel (RPV) materials are modified due to neutron irradiation; this material degradation can be characterized using magnetic methods. For the first time, the progressive change in material properties due to neutron irradiation was investigated on the same specimens, before and after neutron irradiation. A correlation was found between magnetic characteristics and neutron-irradiation-induced damage, regardless of the type of material or the applied measurement technique. The results of the individual micromagnetic measurements proved their suitability for characterizing the degradation of RPV steel caused by simulated operating conditions. A calibration/training procedure was applied on the merged outcome of both testing methods, producing excellent results in predicting transition temperature, yield strength, and mechanical hardness for both materials.

Heat pumps are the key technology to decarbonise thermal processes by upgrading industrial surplus heat using renewable electricity. Existing insight-based integration methods refer to the idealised Grand Composite Curve requiring the full exploitation of heat recovery potential but leave the question of how to deal with technical or economic limitations unanswered. In this work, a novel Heat Pump Bridge Analysis (HPBA) is introduced for practically targeting technical and economic heat pump potential by applying Coefficient of Performance curves into the Modified Energy Transfer Diagram (METD). Removing cross-Pinch violations and operating heat exchangers at minimum approach temperatures by combined application of Bridge Analysis increases the heat recovery rate and reduce the temperature lift to be pumped at the same time. The insight-based METD allows the individual matching of heat surpluses and deficits of individual streams with the capabilities and performance of different market-available heat pump concepts. For an illustrative example, the presented modifications based on HPBA increase the economically viable share of the technical heat pump potential from 61% to 79%.

Rigid filters made of ceramic or metal are widely used to remove solid particles from hot gases at temperature above 260 °C in the petrochemical and coal industries. Pulse-jet cleaning of fine dust from rigid filter candles plays a critical role in the long-term operation of these filters. In this study, an experimental apparatus was fabricated to investigate the behavior of a 2050 mm filter candle, which included monitoring the variation of pressure dynamic characteristics over time and observing the release of dust layers that allowed an analysis of the cleaning performance of ISO 12103-1 test dusts with different particle size distributions. These results showed the release behavior of these dusts could be divided into five stages: radial expansion, axial crack, flaky release, irregular disruption and secondary deposition. The cleaning performance of smaller sized dust particles was less efficient as compared with larger sized dust particles under the same operating conditions primarily because large, flaky-shaped dust aggregates formed during the first three stages were easily broken into smaller, dispersed fragments during irregular disruption that forced more particles back to the filter surface during secondary deposition. Also, a “low-pressure and long-pulse width” cleaning method improved the cleaning efficiency of the A1 ultrafine test dust from 81.4% to 95.9%.

Poppet valves have been used for a long time for very high pressure reciprocating compressors, as for example in the case of Low Density Polyethylene. These applications are very critical because the final pressure can reach 350 MPa and the evaluation of the performance of the machines is strongly connected to the proper operation and performance of the valve itself. The arrangement of cylinders requires generally a certain compactness of valve to withstand high fatigue stresses, but at the same time pressure drop and operating life are very important. In recent years the reliability of the machines has been improving over and over and the customers’ needs are very stringent. Therefore the use of poppet valves has been extended to other cases. In general the mentioned applications are heavy duty services and the simulation of the valves require some coefficients to be used in the differential equations, able to describe the movement of plate/disk or poppet and the flow and related pressure drop through the valves. Such coefficients are often determined in an experimental way in order to have a simulation closer to the real operating conditions. For the flow coefficients it is also possible today to use theoretical programs capable of determining the needed values in a quick and economical way. Some investigations have been carried out to determine the values for certain geometries of poppet valves. The results of the theory have been compared with some experimental tests. The good agreement between the various methods indicates the most suitable procedure to be applied in order to have reliable data. The advantage is evident as the time necessary for the theoretical procedure is faster and less expensive. This is of significant importance at the time of the design and also in case of a need to provide timely technical support for the operating behavior of the valves. Particularly for LDPE, the optimization of all the parameters is strongly necessary. The fatigue stresses of cylinder heads and valve bodies have to match in fact with gas passage turbulence and pressure drop, added to the mechanical behavior of the poppet valve components.
