The study aimed to identify the reality of the services provided by Umm Al-Qura University to its students in the field of student housing, and to provide a proposed vision for the development of student housing service at Umm Al-Qura University in light of global experiences. The study used the descriptive and analytical method. The study population consisted of university housing students (scholarships students) at Umm Al-Qura University, and the sample size reached 104 students. The researcher used the questionnaire as a study tool. Among the most important findings of the study: There is great satisfaction on the part of the housing students on the housing administration’s dealings with students. The results showed the students' need to hold open dialogue meetings with the housing administration to exchange experiences, transfer expertise and experiences, and listen to different points of view through the establishment of trips and entertainment tours, there are places in the housing for the practice of various student activities. Among the most important findings of the study: Building additional housing units, taking into account when designing, increasing the size of apartments and rooms, establishing a public park around student housing to increase the percentage of oxygen and in order to become an outlet for students' free time, establish communication channels between students and the administration of student housing after the student’s graduation from the university, to benefit from the multinationality through language courses and cultural

This study examines the social exclusion characteristics of a sample of users of primary care social services in two local entities in Spain. The objective of this study was to identify the intensity and scope of social exclusion in an exploratory way and to look at the typology of existing exclusionary situations to inform policy making and professional practice. Data from 1009 users were collected by primary care social services professionals, completing the Social Exclusion Scale of the University of Alicante (SES-UA). The dimensions with the greatest levels of social exclusion in the study population were those related to work/employment, income and education and training. The dimensions with an intermediate level of exclusion were those related to housing and social isolation. Social acceptance, family and social conflict and health were the dimensions with the lowest levels of exclusion. The analysis also showed the existence of five significantly different groups, that showed five different life trajectories along the continuum between social exclusion and social inclusion. The results show the importance and utility of developing professional and policy intervention protocols based on research evidence, with the objective of improving the quality of life of the users.

<p>The research tackled the academic intrinsic motivation and its relationship with the emotional intelligence with a sample of the academic overachievers and underachievers of Najran University. The study population consisted of the students of Najran University who are enrolled in the University academic year 2015/2016, during the first semester in the various colleges. The study sample consisted of (423) male and female students; and the study instruments included the emotional IQ which consisted of (54) items, and the academic intrinsic motivation questionnaire, which consisted of (36) items, to identify the overall emotional intelligence degree and the motivation with the students. The results showed that the academic intrinsic motivation and emotional intelligence degrees were high with the university students. Furthermore, the results showed a direct correlational, statistically significant relationship between the academic intrinsic motivation and the emotional intelligence; and there are statistically significant differences between the motivation and emotional intelligence among the academically outstanding and non-outstanding students.</p>

The study aims at understanding the relationship between the use of IT applications in the Learning Resources Centers (henceforth, LRCs) at the university and increasing the academic achievement of the English language students at the Faculty of Education and Literature at the Northern Border University? The researcher relied on the research methodology of the field study, which allowed him to collect the views of a random sample of the English language learners at the university to measure and analyze the effectiveness of the use of IT within the LRCs. The study showed that the IT within the LRCs is one of the most important strategic resources at the level of educational institutions and the main factor in the development of its sectors. There is an interest from the Northern Border University on upgrading and supporting the IT infrastructure, especially in education for it is the basis for community development. A high proportion of English Language students at the university are keen on using and applying many of the technological learning media within the LRCs as a constitutive factor in understanding mental processes such as visualization, thinking, learning and creativity which is the first step towards knowledge and innovation.

To assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices about the Zika virus in both students and workers at the University of Veracruz, an online survey was conducted. The participants were divided into two groups: one according to sex, the other according to whether they were workers or students. Their answers were classified into knowledge, attitudes, and practices and they were rated as low, medium, and high. The results showed that knowledge about Zika prevailing among the university population is considered as medium in 79.4% of the study population. Most respondents know that the mosquito spreads the Zika virus (98.8%) and the clinical characteristics, while sexual transmission by the virus is little known (36.85%). Both the univariate analysis (OR (CI5) 0.227 (0.070–0.735), p = 0.013] and multivariate analysis (OR (CI95) 0.234 (0.071–778), p = 0.018] showed that belonging to the health sciences area is related to having a greater knowledge about Zika. Despite the existing knowledge, a low level of prevention practices prevails in the whole community (55%). A medium level of knowledge about Zika prevailed, while proper implementation of preventive measures for Zika is low, despite the fact that the state of Veracruz—the place where the University is located—is an endemic area.

Abstract BackgroundThere is an increasing prevalence of obesity among college/university students in developing countries similar to the trend being observed in industrialized countries. Of great concern is the persistence of weight gain among this young population with the risk of being overweight and obese increasing with years of study and till adulthood. The aim of this study is to describe the trend and burden of overweight/obesity and emerging associated chronic disease risks among adolescents and young adults at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria.MethodThis is a 10-year retrospective review of medical records of students (undergraduate and post-graduate) admitted between 2009 and 2018 at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. A total of 60,168 participants were analysed. The Body mass index (BMI) categories were determined according to WHO standard definitions and blood pressure was classified according to the Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC7) ResultThe mean age of the study participants was 24.8, SD 8.4 years. A large majority was ≤ 40 years (95.1%). There was a slight male preponderance (51.5%) with a male to female ratio of 1.1:1; undergraduate students constituted 51.9%. The prevalence of BMI categories was underweight (10.5%), overweight and obesity 18.7% and 7.2% respectively. We found significant association between overweight/obesity and older age, being female and undergoing postgraduate study (p = 0.01). Furthermore, females had a higher burden of coexisting abnormal BMI characterized by co-occurrence of underweight, overweight and obesity. Hypertension was the most prevalent obesity-associated non-communicable disease in this study with a prevalence of 8.1%. Also, a third of the study population (35.1%) had prehypertension. Hypertension is significantly associated with age, male sex, overweight/obesity and family history of hypertension. Other rare obesity-associated diseases include asthma, diabetes, dyslipidemia, osteoarthritis and gallstones.ConclusionThis study identified rising trends in the prevalence of obesity, a double burden of malnutrition among the study population and the emergence of non-communicable disease risks with a lifelong implication on their health and concomitant burden on the healthcare system. Cost-effective interventions are urgently needed at the secondary and tertiary-level educational institutions to address these issues.

Electronic and print resources usages and preferences among undergraduates of Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara State, Nigeria has been examined. The study population consist of all undergraduates of the University, from which a sample of 250 that is 10 percent of the population was selected. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire. 231 copies of the questionnaire were completed and returned, representing 92.45 per cent response rate. Results from the study revealed that 110 (47.6 %) of the respondents preferred print resources, while interestingly, the same number 110 (47.6 %) preferred electronic resources; 11(4.8 %) of the participants did not provide any response to the question. It therefore implies that both print and electronic resources are complementary in meeting the information needs of undergraduates. However, majority of the respondents indicated that they usually supplement print materials with electronic resources or vice versa. The test of hypotheses revealed that user preferences were influenced by demographic factors such as age, course and level of study. Libraries should maintain hybrid collections, as both resources were found to be relevant sources of information for teaching, learning and research is recommended.

In language courses, oral skills are frequently a source of anxiety for students. Moreover, in some occasions, students are unfamiliar with the evaluation criteria used to assess their performances, increasing their level of stress when facing the oral exam. This article describes a series of activities based on the introduction of several formative and summative self- and peer-assessment activities in a Year 2 Spanish module, aimed at students in the Modern Languages Programme at the University of Nottingham. Students have varied profiles and learning styles, as their programmes include Modern Languages and some variations of Joint Honours programmes with languages. The activities aimed to give students some extra tools to allow them to better monitor their oral performance, potentially easing their concern on the linguistic elements which would be assessed and letting them autonomously identify their own strengths and the areas where they might need improvement.

The study dealt with the issue of teaching Arabic calligraphy skills using technology with the aim of making a decision towards including them in the Arabic language courses, and to achieve the goal of the study, the two researchers used the descriptive survey method and an electronic questionnaire was designed to refer to the study population consisting of all teachers, teachers, supervisors and Arabic language supervisors who specialize in teaching them in the universities of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Participants in the referendum (400) individuals, then the opinions were treated statistically using percentages, and the percentage of supporters and opponents limited its teaching and the reasons for each team. The result appeared in favor of the opponents by 85.4%, and among the most important reasons for the opposition is that the teaching of calligraphy is a basic written skill that must be studied and practiced in a real, tangible, real way that must be taught by hand and the student’s training in it in order to acquire the skill and develop away from technology, and the percentage of supporters was 14.6% and one of the most important reasons for their support The student’s use of the computer is a modern skill that the student needs a lot. So I think the time has come to take advantage of the long training time on the skills of beauty and speed in training the student to use the keyboard quickly, and teach him from the location of choosing fonts, and perhaps it will evolve to his teaching using Arabic script in the letter And other skills.

The Language Zone at the University of Leeds, UK, is well established as a hub for language learners across the campus, both those on language courses and those studying languages independently for a variety of reasons. It has been operating entirely online since March 2020 and will do so until the campus fully re-opens. This written account gives a brief overview of the changes made to the Language Zone’s services and provision of learning materials in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, including how the team members’ roles were adapted to ensure staff skills were taken into account. In addition to showing how services were maintained when the campus was closed at short notice and teaching was moved online until further notice, the study outlines how the Language Zone developed a platform to support the 2020 summer pre-sessional programmes to be delivered completely online. Finally, reflecting on the recent achievements and considering how to support students in the future, it aims to inspire other self-access centres to think about what they can do to develop their services in response to the crisis and beyond.

This study looked into the profile of the program implementers in terms of age, sex, and educational attainment, number of years as service practitioners and trainings and seminars attended. Likewise it also covered the assessment on the different institutional programs and services which include admission services, guidance and counseling services, scholarship and financial assistance, food services, health services, library services and student housing. The integration of innovative practices in the delivery of quality student services were also determined. Research design was descriptive with the questionnaire as the main data gathering instrument complemented by interview and focus group discussion. Respondents of the study were 84 program implementers and 331 student leaders in the three state colleges in Mindoro and Marinduque (MIMA) provinces including their satellite campuses. Profile description of the program implementers revealed majority were female, middle –aged between 25-35 years of age, masteral degree holders with at most ten years in service as student service implementers. Attended trainings were relatively few.  Further, the program implementers assessed the quality services delivery for admission, guidance and counselling services, scholarship and financial assistance were   delivered to a great extent while health, food and library services were rated moderate extent. Housing services were delivered to a slight extent. On the other hand, student leaders rated the quality services delivery of all areas was to a moderate extent. Significant differences in the assessments between program implementers and student leaders were noted in most areas except for student housing services where both concurred delivery to a slight extent. More so, the innovative practices to achieve quality student service delivery were delivered to a moderate extent.  Based on the findings, a management plan for quality student service delivery for Mindoro and Marinduque state colleges was prepared. It was recommended that the management plan be reviewed for enhancement and tried for implementation to achieve quality student service delivery.
