Zaynab al-Ghazālī (1917-2005) is regarded as a pioneering figure in the field of women’s preaching and religious teaching in Egypt. Her story, however, remains largely undocumented. In Western scholarship, al-Ghazālī has often been framed in terms of a contradictory figure, whose own choices flagrantly undercut her statements on the role of women in Islamic society. Trying to go beyond this type of appraisal, her writings are analyzed in order to question whether or not Zaynab al-Ghazālī’s intellectual genealogy should be understood within the context of her considerable exposure to a well-developed discourse of women’s rights at the turn of the twentieth century. Indeed, she made available to Muslim women a particular field of arguments, while foreclosing for them certain possibilities for action. Overall, her statements and choices in life need to be read as a function of her historical and geographical context and her positioning needs to be framed within the consciousness on the role women had come to play in the public domain.

There are many supporting and inhibiting factors for the role of Muslim women executors. This study aims to find the role of female educators in Islam as a dual function that functions as a teacher, parent, and community member. The research method uses qualitative with a phenomenological approach. The findings show the role of Muslim women is not ideal, including the role of women as educators in schools, parents, and education experts. The purpose of this article is to use Georgina Herrera’s poetry in order to deconstruct the tradition of <em>santería</em> that considers the Yoruba religion under the wing of Catholicism and not as a universal religion. The article is devoted to the urgent and poorly known problem of the place and role of women in the English gentry’s community of the first half of the XV century. Using the information from the correspondence of the Armburghs (The Armburgh Papers), the author traces the main stages of Joan Armburgh's life and varieties of her fortune and that of her nieces and finds out how typical they were in accordance with generally accepted ideas about the place and mission of a woman from the gentry’s family. The article shows that the status of a woman was determined by the family and her well-being depended on the relatives - her father and husband. However, this did not exclude the active role of the woman in asserting her rights and interests of the family. The biography of Joan Armburgh and the facts from the life of her nieces, who belonged to the gentry, contradict the idea of weakness and humility of wives in noble families. Difficulties that they had to deal with forced these women to show a surprising for noblewomen activity and persistent desire to defend their interests, relying on their own connections in society and knowledge of law, and on men’s support.

The following essay explores the use of fiction in ethnographic research. While the concept of fiction as a research methodology is not a new one, most proponents claim that fiction is most useful in the writing of ethnographic data. Despite the gradual acceptance of arts-based methods in ethnography, there still remains a false dichotomy of art and scientific research. This essay contributes to the discussion by arguing that fiction also plays an active role in producing knowledge and truth. To make this argument, the author brings together in conversation scholars of art and literature with social researchers. While multiple examples are illustrated to show how fiction creates knowledge in ethnography, the primary focus will be Clifford Geertz’s (2005) “Notes on a Balinese Cockfight.” The purpose is to demonstrate how fiction can be a means of knowledge production, so long as it is situated in sound research methods.

This paper explores the relation that the inhabitants of an urban space, in this case the city of Querétaro, Mexico, establish with the water supply system. In particular, it seeks to understand the way in which the supply-side policies are configuring the relation that subjects keep with the territory around them. For this purpose, four variables (educational level, land value, housing legal status and development goals) are crossed with the existing knowledge about the water supply system, paying special attention to the differences among different city areas. The final goal is to understand how water modernization policies are affecting the links between subjects and territories. The results express that in the areas where those policies are more deeply consolidated, the links with territory are weaker, generating weakness in the ability to articulate management alternatives. Another weakness lies in the ability to create a much more active role of the subjects in their relation with water and its management as a basic resource.

Wixáritari (pl.) from Western Mexico perform a series of ceremonies through the cultivation and harvesting of Corn. In communities outside Wixárika land, families align their ceremonies to the academic calendar and working calendar to ensure the families’ participation. This article discusses the active role of Maize within ceremony from cultivation to harvesting, emphasizing the role of women in preparing Corn-based substances for ceremonial offerings. Through storytelling and embodied practices such as gastronomic representations, women are active agents in transmitting the relationships between Corn and community members. Drawing from my ongoing ethnographic fieldwork among Wixárika families in Tepic, Mexico, the article analyzes the ontological relationship between Wixárika and Corn. Utilizing verbal performances such as storytelling, this article highlights the importance of Maize for purposes of continuing the community’s connection to geographies, identity and the significance of women in enabling inter-species relations.
