One important element in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) 2025 blueprint is the strengthening of Small, Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The third largest city in Indonesia, Medan City, has a start-up Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) which ranks third in Sumatra itself. The problem is that not all MSMEs in Indonesia can survive or experience growth. So this study aims to determine the effect of entrepreneurial self-efficacy and entrepreneurial competence on entrepreneurial entry decisions and the success of start-up MSMEs in Medan City. The method of determining is the sample using a purposive sampling method, from 100 MSMEs owners. The findings of this study are that entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) has a significant effect on entrepreneurial entry decisions, while entrepreneurial competence is not significant. However, the success of MSME start-ups in Medan is significantly influenced by entrepreneurial competence while ESE is not. The implication of this study is that strong confidence is needed when starting a business, and requires competence to gain business success.

ASEAN  Economic Community (AEC) has been agreed by the ASEAN leaders in 2003 as one mechanism to increase the social economic welfare of the people in ASEAN countries. Whilst it is no doubt the formation of AEC will give many benefits to ASEAN countries, there will be also negative impacts of the AEC. This paper aimed at analysing the implication and challenges of the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) toward Indonesian economy with particular attention to agricultural sector and the micro and small-medium enterprises (SMEs) development. The paper argues inter alia that the formation of AEC  will give benefit to ASEAN countries if and only if the ASEAN community has one voice in socio-economic and policial commitment and coordination. The economic sectors that need further greater improvement toward the success of the formation are agricultural sector and the micro, small and medium enterprises. Thus, much remain to be done by ASEAN countries in general and in Indonesia in particular toward the success of .the formation of AEC.

Abstract Crowdsourcing has been identified as a valuable paradigm in the open design movement. In engineering design, it offers various benefits, such as the generation of diverse ideas and the involvement of consumers. Despite the potential benefits, there are many ways in which crowdsourcing initiatives may fail. An example of such a failure is when a previously successful initiative for a large organization fails to attract a suitable number of participants with diverse expertise for a start-up. Consequently, the start-up does not receive good sets of ideas, both in quantity and variety. Such failures of crowdsourcing initiatives are common due to the lack of appropriate design of crowdsourcing initiatives based on the organizational characteristics such as its size. While frameworks and guidelines exist for the design of crowdsourcing initiatives, whether these are useful for all sizes of organizations, is yet to be determined. Large organizations such as Procter & Gamble and NASA, now conduct crowdsourcing initiatives regularly. Furthermore, start-ups are emerging that leverage crowdsourcing as an integral part of their business model. On the contrary, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have fallen behind in the adoption of crowdsourcing processes. In this paper, we aim to identify the challenges associated with crowdsourcing and how and whether these differ according to organizational size. We present the results of an interview study with industry professionals from five organizations of varying sizes, and yield key challenges associated with the application of crowdsourcing. This paper discusses suggested support mechanisms for crowdsourcing in SMEs and directions for further research for crowdsourcing in engineering design.

Many small and medium enterprises (SMEs) want to introduce recommendation services to boost sales, but they need to have sufficient amounts of data to introduce these recommendation services. This study proposes an extrapolative collaborative filtering (ECF) system that does not directly share data among SMEs but improves recommendation performance for small and medium-sized companies that lack data through the extrapolation of data, which can provide a magical experience to users. Previously, recommendations were made utilizing only data generated by the merchant itself, so it was impossible to recommend goods to new users. However, our ECF system provides appropriate recommendations to new users as well as existing users based on privacy-preserved payment transaction data. To accomplish this, PP2Vec using Word2Vec was developed by utilizing purchase information only, excluding personal information from payment company data. We then compared the performances of single-merchant models and multi-merchant models. For the merchants with more data than SMEs, the performance of the single-merchant model was higher, while for the SME merchants with fewer data, the multi-merchant model’s performance was higher. The ECF System proposed in this study is more suitable for the real-world business environment because it does not directly share data among companies. Our study shows that AI (artificial intelligence) technology can contribute to the sustainability and viability of economic systems by providing high-performance recommendation capability, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups.
