STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION TO SPEAK IN A GROUP DISCUSSION

This research was done to know the factors’ influencing students’ motivation to speak in a group discussion. This research is qualitative survey, in which the subjects are the Third-Semester Students of English Education Study Program of Tanjungpura University in Academic Year 2018/2019. The subjects of this research were 25 students in class A. The data were collected through observation and survey. Based on the data the students are motivated enough in speaking class and the motivation are relatively high across the students but most of the students faced several speaking problems such as afraid of making mistakes, lack of confidence, and lack of motivation. In summary, the factors that influenced the students’ motivation to speak in a group discussion are the students' interest to the materials of learning, the students’ interest to the culture of the target language, and lastly the reinforced that the students receive inside/outside the teaching and learning process. All of the factors are related to types of motivation, such as, intrinsic, extrinsic, instrumental, and integrative motivation. The writer claimed that knowing and understand sorts of motivation is essential with the intention of making a better teaching and learning environment

The purpose of this study is to trace the extent of the use of Bengkulen folklore in the process of teaching and learning rhetorical subject. The study is a descriptive research which tries to portray the exercise of teaching rhetorical subject in which Bengkulen folklore is included. This study applies qualitative approach. The research subject deals with the fifth semester students of class A from the study program of Indonesian Language Teaching (FKIP) of Bengkulu University in the academic year of 2016-2017. The study results in that student activities change into positive direction in learning by folklore. The application of folklore to the students can improve their skill in rhetoric or public communication. It can be seen from the grades they achieve and the extent of their finishing the subject. Based on the data analyzed, the result shows that there 21 students who receive grade up 70 and their fulfillment in learning reaches 90, 84%.

This article is aimed at describing the process and the result in improving grammar mastery in writing English of English Education Study Program in State University ofPadang through problem solving technique. The subject of the research was 30 students who took Grammar I subject in even semester of academic year 201112012. The instruments used are: questionnaire.students' portfolio, observers' journals, researcher's journal, pre-test, and post-test. The data were analyzed by using the descriptive statistic in the form of the mean and percentage, and the validity of the data was Checkedby using triangulation technique. The results of the study show that 1) the process in improving grammar mastery in writing English through problem solving technique ran well. 2) Theresultof improvementon the grammar mastery in writing English varied within the three cycles of different instructional activities conducted. The indicators were seen from the pre-to post test results. of each cycle. The results in writing English sentence mastery through classical instructional activities improved from 2,4 (limited to moderate) to 3,6 (moderate to extensive). In group discussion activities the improvement is from 3,36 (moderate to extensive) 3,7 (moderate to extensive). Meanwhile, the improvement is seen from 3,8 (moderate to extensive) to 4,6 (extensive to complete) in pair work instructional activities. Based on the results, the learning processthrough problem solving technique can improve the learning results of grammar mastery in writing English. In other words, the hypothesis of action proposed is accepted.

This study was aimed to improve the students’ grammar achievement, especially in using conditional sentences by applying peer teaching technique. The subject of the study was the third semester students of English Education Study Program in academic year 2017/ 2018. This study was conducted by applying Classroom Action Research (CAR) which had been conducted in two cycles and each cycle consisted of three meetings. The instruments of collecting data were quantitative data (grammar test and questionnaire) and qualitative data (observation checklist and fieldnotes). The results of the test showed that the mean score of pre test was 15, formative test was 35 and post test was 63. The result of observation checklist and fieldnotes showed that the students were interested in teaching and learning conditional sentences by applying peer teaching technique. These indicated that there was a significant improvement of the students’ grammar achievement by applying peer teaching technique.

This research was aimed to know  and to analyze how English students in University of Bengkulu, English Education Study program class A and B, academic year 2015/2016 pronounced English consonants /?/ and /ð/. The instrument used for collecting the data was recording. This research used qualitative and quantitative method. The result of this research showed most of English students pronounced English consonants /?/ and /ð/ incorrectly. It showed that the students were not good at pronouncing English consonants /?/ and /ð/ when they were located at the middle or at the final of the words. Based on the findings, the study concluded that the errors were caused by several reasons such as the sound of /?/ and /ð/ which did not exist in Bahasa Indonesia, the influence of similar sound with Bahasa Inonesia consonants /t/ and /d/, and also the carelessness

Acquiring writing skill needs a lot of practices, and to produce a piece of writing needs a long process; hence, the appropriate method of the teaching and learning is very important to help students master writing skill. This article aims at reporting a research on the implementation of Student Teams-Achievement Division (STAD) as an alternative teaching method to improve students’ writing skill. Through Classroom Action Research design, the researcher did the research at fourth semester students of English Education study program of STAIN Kediri in academic year 2012-1013. The research procedures are planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The findings show that the implementation of STAD can improve the students’ writing skill which were indicated by the high percentage of the students’ active involvement and positive response on the implementation, and the students’ product of writing in which all of writing components can achieve good level in marking scheme as the minimum level.

This research attemted to find out the factors that affect students speaking anxiety in speaking for presentation class. This research was carried out by employing descriptive quantitative design. The population of this research was the fourth semester students of English Education Study Program of University of Bengkulu in academic year 2018/2019. The samples of this research were taken by using random sampling tehcnique, the total of the sample was 57 students. The data were collected by questionnaire consisted of 29 questions related to the anxiety. The results of this study showed that the students mostly had the mildly anxiety. There were three factors that causing the anxiety of the students in speaking; Fear of Negative Evaluation (Mildly Affected; Mean Score: 3.12), Communication Apprehension (Mildly Affected; Mean Score: 3.09), and Test Anxiety (Mildly Affected; Mean Score: 2.89). In conclusion, there were three factors that students speaking anxiety in speaking for presentation class  and the most dominant factors is the Fear of Negative Evaluation

Translating text is look like an easy work, but it is a complicated job. A translation text may not have different meaning from the source text to the target language of the text. Translating text from Indonesia to English should not change the sense of language since our culture is different from abroad culture. Translating text from Indonesia to English is more difficult than from English to Indonesia. Since, English has grammar where grammar should not be error. Then, translator also should pay attention to word choice of English. The purposes of carrying this research are to know students’ ability in translating text and common errors made by students in translating text from English to Indonesia at English education students of UPI YPTK Padang in 2019/2020 academic year. This research was descriptive one. The sample of this research was 30 students of English study program of UPI YPTK Padang. The data were collected by using test. The result of the test showed that students had different ability in translating text. In general, students’ ability in translating text was categorized good.

This research aims at finding the effectiveness of Toondoo Comic in teaching speaking at the second semester of <em>Sendratasik</em> Study Program of Hamzanwadi University in the academic year 2018-2019. This research was a pre experiment by using single group pre-test and post-test design. The population of the study was 47 students from A and B classes. The sample of the study was 17 students from class A. It was taken through purposive random sampling. A speaking test was used in collecting the data. The data collected were analyzed by using descriptive statistic, and paired sample t-test was used to test the hypothesis. It was performed using SPSS 22 for Windows. The result shows that the mean in the pre-test was 41.06 and was 60.71 in the post- test. Additionally, the hypothesis testing using paired sample t-test resulted significance (2-tailed) value level .000; it was lower than .05. This indicated that Toondoo comic was significantly effective in teaching speaking. Thus it is suggested that Tondoo comic is considered an alternative media in teaching and learning process.

Linguistics Description of English is a new subject in the curriculum of English Education Study Program in the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education in Jambi University. Hence, the material for this subject is not yet available. Therefore, this research aims at developing a prototype of teaching materials for Linguistics Description of English course. By designing the prototype of teaching materials for this course, the researchers expected that lecturers who will teach this subject will not find difficulties in teaching this course. Besides, the use of materials which have been designed based on students’ need and linguistic lecturers’ discussion is anticipated to be able to encourage students to be more active in teaching and learning process. Thus, the choice of the topics is suited to the characteristics of the students and drew from the result of the need analysis questionnaire and forum group discussion (FGD) with the lecturers. This research utilized research and development design, based on the theory developed by Borg and Gall (1983). The result of the research is the prototype of the teaching materials for Linguistics Description of English course.

This research investigates how process of speaking instruction takes place at IAIN SMH Banten. There are three main issues in the research problems: the process of teaching speaking, obstacles found in the teaching and learning process, and what efforts do they make to solve the obstacles in speaking. The process of teaching speaking discusses materials, preparation, procedures or steps in teaching speaking while obstacles and solutions discuss the speaking barriers that the students faced in speaking class and how they minimize the barriers. By applying descriptive qualitative research design to students of fourth semester in academic year 2014/2015, the result shows that the focus of speaking instruction at the fourth semester of English education department of IAIN SMH Banten seemed to let the students speak, without any language skills discussion as the feedback. At the same time, during the process of speaking instruction there are some problems faced by students. The first is  problem of limited English Competence dealt with students poor of vocabulary and the second is problems of psychological factors.
