AbstractEmergent research shows how some farmer groups in the United States are gaining visibility as a critical knowledge community, making important contributions to the ecological health and overall sustainability of the natural resource base. This study focuses on funded farmer research projects in the north central region, to analyze the process and outcome of local inquiry embodied in the discursive contents of reports to a funding agency, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program. The analyses suggest that farmers' locality-specific agricultural practices may constitute a reflective and learning community, generating local knowledge keenly attuned to an underlying value system that supports actions towards sustainability.

AbstractThe extent to which pests should be managed by biological versus chemical methods has been a burning public policy issue since about 1950. A thorough policy analysis is needed to facilitate movement beyond the status quo. Such analysis should: a) review the extent of adoption of ecologically selective methods of pest control that have emerged from the last three decades of research, b) examine changes in policies, legislation and institutional arrangements that would foster more rapid and widespread adoption of environmentally benign pest controls, c) assess the role of biological controls in facilitating survival of farms during periods of economic adversity and in increasing the competitiveness of American agriculture, d) evaluate opportunities to use ecologically selective pest controls to improve water quality, to reduce environmental impacts of pests and of farming practices, and to preserve the usefulness of pest-resistant crop cultivars and pesticides, and e) identify options and mechanisms to further increase the flow of private and public resources into biocontrol research, development and implementation. A committee of highly accomplished and respected citizens needs to be formed to conduct a thorough analysis of the above and other issues related to the long-term economic viability of farming and to the development and widespread adoption of agricultural practices that will conserve and improve the resource base, and that are devoid of negative impacts on the environment and public health.

ABSTRACT This study examines the shifting cultivation farming and settled farming by Arfak farmers, and their implications on the community food security.  The research is conducted in Minyememut and Arion Villages at Hink District, and Suteibey and Igymbai Villages at Anggi District of Arfak Mountains Regency of West Papua Province.  The objective of the study is to compare potato farming, productivity and farmer income from potato farming.  The research uses analytical descriptive method, and in-depth interviews techniques for data collection, by using questionnaires, field observation and documentation.  Data analysis is done by tabulation analysis, data interpretation and conclusion withdrawal. The results show that potato farming is still done by using shifting cultivation system.  However, there has been a settled farming practice in Arfak Mountains Regency. Although the system used is different, but the two of the agricultural practices are still using the same technology.  Potato farms’ area of shifting cultivation is larger than the settled farming, so the production is greater.  On the other hand, the productivity of settled farming is higher than the shifting cultivation system. This condition shows that the shifting cultivation farming and settled farming have implications for supporting community food security in Arfak Regency.ABSTRAKPenelitian ini mengkaji usahatani kentang perladangan berpindah dan usahatani menetap yang dilakukan petani Arfak dan implikasinya pada ketahanan pangan masyarakat.

The main content of the study is the analysis of the interpretation of the term “natural and recreational potential” in its modern understanding, given the increased role of the tourism industry in preserving and building up human potential in the post-pandemic period. The study of this problem against the background of the new Tourism and the Hospitality Industry National Project currently being developed is relevant, since it affects the key component of the natural resource base for the development of the national economy, reveals the strategic prospects for ensuring sustainable socio-economic development of the regions of the country with recreational and tourist specialization. The authors conclude that the natural recreational potential is not only the totality of the natural recreational resources of the territory in their quantitative and qualitative representation, but also the prevailing conditions for their use (subjective and objective), latent capacities that can limit or activate the development of tourist activities in the regions. The hierarchical structure of the natural and recreational potential of the region is presented, which includes, in addition to natural recreational resources, a group of factors that affect the efficiency of their use. The paper determines that access to the technological aspects of tourism industry management, using digitalization in the Big Data mode, is a key factor in ensuring the rational and effective use of natural and recreational potential in the creation of regional tourism products, to promote sustainable socio-economic development regions of Russia. In the course of the research, along with general scientific methods, systemic and structural-functional approaches, comparative and retrospective methods of analysis were used.

The article aims at formulating a concept for the social tourism development strategy in Ukraine, taking into account the European experience and national realities. The article proves that the main function of social tourism is to create and maintain appropriate conditions that allow people to participate in the tourism process, i.e. provide them with access to recreation and the effective recovery of physical, emotional and spiritual strength. The study presents a generalized structure of the social tourism system in Europe, enumerating the supply and demand factors together with their key elements. Based on foreign experience, the work identifies three main systems of social tourism services, such as: specialized accommodation; holiday checks; charitable donations. The article suggests a concept for social tourism development strategy in Ukraine, providing for a number of measures to form social tourism in Ukraine. To specify the measures needed, it is necessary to use the SWOT-analysis data and results. It has been found out that these measures comprise several groups, such as: organizational measures; measure related to participants’ work in social tourism; specific steps for social tourism promotion. The author comes to conclusion that social tourism can be considered the basis for domestic tourism development in a country, because a high development rate of domestic tourist flows will provide a new qualitative level of development for the national tourism industry, which, in turn, will contribute to placing the focus of tourism on tourists, both domestic and foreign ones.
