The differences between male and female students in the field of education can be studied from several points of view. The aim of the present study2 is to approach the issues of mobility closely connected to the educational institution, institutional existence and school, using the filter of value sociology, thus bringing us closer to the different school attitudesand behaviours of the two genders, focusing on higher education. In our analysis, we used the ‘Campus-lét’ Research database3 (2010) of more that 2,000 students (N=2,384). In the course of completing questionnaires, students responded to the Rokeach Value Survey, which includes 18 terminal and 18 instrumental values evaluated on a five-grade scale. The techniques used were value averages and ranking, factor analysis and analysis of variance. We identified three factors with the use of terminal values (humanist-integrated, seeking  happiness in individuals, hedonistic-egoistic) and four with the use of instrumental values (philanthropic, rational, open minded-creative, bureaucratic), with the factor scores indicating a significant relation to gender in five cases.

The study attempted to describe the factors affecting the sociolinguistic andstrategic competencies in English among teachers in Higher Education Institutionsin Lipa City and determine the relationship between the demographic characteristicsand their assessments. The study was done during the school year 2010-2011. ThreeHigher Education Institutions in Lipa City were selected as the research locale. Totalenumeration was used as sampling for the study. Both quantitative and qualitativeresearch methods were employed. The respondents agreed that the factors of contextof acquisition, accommodating speech norms and code switching, degree of contactwith second language users and level of confidence affect their sociolinguisticcompetence. Likewise, they also agreed that the factors of questioning skills and useof non-verbal communication affect their strategic competencies. Variations in termsof the relationships of different demographic characteristics and their sociolinguisticand strategic competencies were also established. A general sense, the teachers’diverse characteristics generated different points of view on how the factors affecttheir competencies. This led to the conclusion that they are the ones responsible why the factors influence their competencies. They should be the ones responsible for affecting culture and not culture to affect their language competencies. It is of greatimportance that teachers should take the initiative to study and systematically use thecompetencies which they can work on. HEI administrators should offer professionaldevelopment seminars as these are necessary for the effective use of the teachers’competencies.Keywords: competency, sociolinguistic competence, strategic competency,context of acquisition, code switching, confidence questioning skills, non-verbalcommunication

The starting point of the paper is the co-construction of gender and technology, that is, the theory that the usage of and the attitude to certain kinds of technology are a way to “do” one’s gender. A survey is presented that supports the assumption that with the routinization of e-learning in higher education e-learning loses its character as a technology, which can be used for gender performance. With the routinization of its usage e-learning is becoming a gender-neutral tool with no outstanding technological appeal. However, though doing gender may disappear in certain fields the co-construction of gender and technology is still valid as basic structure. Furthermore, the results show that e-learning meanwhile supports the attitude we call <em>study as consumption</em>, that is, the expectation that the main e-learning features are usual services to be provided by the educational institution. This attitude is to be found among male and female students alike.

The phenomenon of the development of the veil in Indonesia, especially among higher education has become a concern lately. This is due to the view of the public about the relationship between the use of the veil with the influence of certain ideologies. This research aims to determine the reasons and motivations for the use of the veil among female students, perceptions received in the surrounding environment, and obstacles encountered. This research uses a phenomenological approach as part of qualitative research. Participants in this research were 12 female students from private universities in Yogyakarta. The method of in-depth interviews using interview guide instruments becomes a technique in collecting data. Data analysis using semantic reduction is done by identifying important statements from the results of the interview, determining the theme of the discussion, and describing the significance of the whole experience of veiled students. The results showed that there were five main themes in the use of the veil in higher education, namely the average age of female students who used veil, motivation and reasons for using a veil, perceptions from within themselves and their environment, constraints encountered, and consistency in wearing a veil. Some of the findings obtained are certainly new references that need to be further developed. Therefore, knowledge about Islamophobia especially the perception of the phenomenon of the veil is important for educational institutions in determining policy and for the community to be a reference in dealing with the phenomenon.

The purpose of this paper is to assess gender norms among students towards equality in higher education in Malaysia. The study was conducted in two higher learning institutions such as International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Malaysia. A total of 300 students (77 males & 223 females) were selected as the respondents using purposive sampling method. A survey research design was employed in this study. Questionnaires were completed in a supervised setting by the research protocol. The first objective of this study was to assess student’s attitudes towards equality at higher education institutions. Results revealed that despite the majority of the respondents showed favorable attitudes towards equality; less favorable attitude towards gender equality was noted with respect on religious leadership and boys’ priority over girls in education. The study examined whether there is any difference between male and female student’s attitudes towards equality. Results showed that female students tended to have more egalitarian or non-traditional attitudes than male students towards equality. The paper analyzed the relationship between the demographic characteristics and student’s attitudes towards equality. The results revealed that the ethnicity, region of residence, father’s educational level have positive associations with student’s attitudes towards equality. The main question that is addressed in this presentation is how we can interpret the situation of sexual relations in the context of higher education in Iran. The article is formed as an autoethnography, focusing on the relationship between sexuality and university in post-revolutionary Iran. Data are gathered from my own lived experiences at university both as a student and as a lecturer during about 25 years of academic life and interpreted by the technique of systematic introspection. I explore specific problems regarding sexuality at Iranian universities, such as sexual harassment and the relationship between male university professors and their female students. I conclude with a set of questions that require further investigations. The whole article, however, can be regarded as the process of the transformation from a sexually ignorant typical Iranian male student to a more or less gender-sensitive Iranian male university professor.

This article aims to contribute to the debate about the reflection on biographical experiences, in particular, the relationship between daughter and father. It presents my research project devoted to young adult women, students, and their perceptions of their relationships with fathers. It also contains an analysis of autobiographical essays of female students (the research participants). The main idea of this research is to appreciate the women’s points of view and to underline the role of reflexivity in the constitution of self-knowledge. Also, I try to discuss my process of becoming a reflective feminist researcher.

The article considers government measures to establish professorial disciplinary court at higher education institutions of the capital (the court conducted its work from August 27, 1902 to February 22, 1917), the work of the commission on the development of regulations for this body, and the main normative legal acts to implement it. The article examines the issues of the activity of the professorial disciplinary court and the relationship between the participants of this disciplinary system: students, professors, and the authorities. The students who appeared before the professorial disciplinary court were accused of violation of the norms of administrative law of their educational institution, and in accordance with the university charter and the rules of the university, they had to abide by the decision of the court. Professors were in the same position of dependence: membership in the Council of the educational institution obliged them to assume the role of judges. The article explains why the professorial courts did not have the opportunity to become an autonomous body, why the professors themselves did not want to take on the responsibility of judges, and whether all students were hostile to their work. Analyzing the cases of violations which were considered at that time and concerned the rules and order at a university, the author comes to the conclusion that it was not possible to ensure order and create conditions for the restoration of the proper course of academic life by introducing the system of university disciplinary proceedings. The compromise between the authorities and the students, which should have been facilitated by the existence of the professorial court, was not reached. Resistance from students and professors forced the Ministry of Public Education to reconsider the need for the existence of professorial courts and exclude them from the draft of the new university charter.

This study aimed to compare physical activity and fitness of physical education and sports teacher department students and investigate the relationship between physical parameters and academic success. Twenty-five (12 male and 12 female) students volunteered to participate in this study. Sportive background and higher education examination points, shuttle run test scores, and academic success pieces of information of students were taken from the personal folder with the permission of faculty administration. Body composition measured via bioelectric impedance method, shuttle run test performed. Self-admitted international physical activity questionary (long form) was performed. Sportive background and higher education examination points, physical activity levels, and academic success have founded similar within both sexes. However, aerobic capacity results decreased when compared to the entrance of the college with graduation in both male and female students. Also, there was a correlation between VO2max change percentage and academic success. Requirements of physical education and sports department cannot maintain until graduation. These results indicate that there is not an impact of physical tests to graduation quantities of the physical education teacher. However, the relationship between VO2max change percentage and academic success is important indicator that active playing sports and physical activity may be beneficial. To grow up better and more quantitative physical education teachers, future studies require to investigate current physical test which performed the entrance of physical education and sports teacher education and querying that do physical tests a good method to attain requested goals.

Education is the most important thing in a person’s life. Formal education is the learning process held by a particular educational institution, starting from the elementary, secondary, and higher education. To produce well-qualified college graduates, good teaching and learning process is needed. Determination of learning achievement in Higher Education is in the form of score of test results and observation conducted by the lecturer. The competence of college graduates cannot be seen only from the GPA and study duration, but also the ability of foreign language such as English. This study aims to determine the relationship between student achievement and English proficiency with study duration. Sampling techniques is done randomly. Statistical analysis used for this study was Pearson correlation analysis and testing the hypothesis by using Z-test. The result of the analysis indicates that there is a significant relationship statistically between student achievement and graduates’ study duration of Merdeka University Pasuruan that is the correlation coefficient obtained was –0.515. It means that the better (higher) of students’ achievement the faster the length of study will be, and the lower the students’ achievement then the longer the duration of the study period will be. For the relationship between the students’ abilities of foreign language with the duration of study, obtained correlation coefficient of 0.102, but the relationship formed insignificant statistically.

The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between occupational stress and organisational commitment of employees at a higher education institution. A random sample (N=30) was chosen from academic staff within the university. The study used a quantitative design. The Organisational Stress Screening Tool (ASSET) and Allen and Meyer’s Organisational Commitment Tool (OCT) were administered. The study revealed that a statistical significant relationship exists between occupational stress and organizational commitment of employees. The study also showed that academic staff overall experienced average levels of occupational stress and organisational commitment. Job characteristics and work relationship were found to be the major sources of occupation stress. It is recommended that higher education institutions should improve employee participation in decision making to reduce employees’ stress as a result of unmanageable workloads and overload.
